View Full Version : Favorite '69 Z's we've owned

This is my favorite Z that I've owned. Its had a very good owner down in CA for the last several years, and he was kind enough to send me this recent picture. This was an 02C Los Angeles car, 72 72 w/711 standard interior. Console, gauges, M-20 wide ratio (double stamped with the partial VIN), and a BO1220G rearend. For those unfamiliar, the BO rear is the 3.73 12 bolt you got if you opted NOT to get the recommended positraction on your Z. Rally Sport trim, but flat hood and no spoilers. I loved it that way, and am so grateful the new owner has kept it as such. It had 4 of its original 5 Jan 20th dated YH wheels when I bought it, and I found a 5th Jan 20 wheel in a stack of FW's at a swapmeet locally within a year of buying it (!!). Had the original POP with it, and I found a very readable chassis build sheet on top of the gas tank. Great car! I know many on the board here have had '69 Z's, and would like to see you post your favorites if you get a chance.

I still own this car. Flat hood no spoilers. The fact the car did not have a ZL2 hood and D80 attracted me to it among other things. I bought the car 6 years ago with 35K miles and about 95% original paint. The car looked a little rough in places within 20 feet so I decided to paint it. Other than paint the car is original, including the carpet and dashpad.
I don't know if I like the TT's or not...they grow on me then I look at the car with Rallys and think about taking them off. I guess the good news is that they just bolt on and off!

Best current thread on the forum!
Love the gold car with the TTs... don't change a thing!
Seems like everyone wants a red or black muscle car but the majority of cars in the 70s were colors of the era, gold, green and blue. Olds actually had three golds in 1970. My car was originally gold and I almost painted it black many years ago. Very glad I restored it the original color. There is a picture of my olds in the post on this site related to my 1970 442 w-30. The Camero look great in gold.

My first Z was orange with black stripes. Looking back I was pretty fortunate to purchase it in 1976. To me that color combination has the wow factor. It funny now but I debated buying the car because of the hideous fiber optic monitors on the fenders(I've grown fond of them now). This was the car sold in 1983 and purchased back in Dec of 09.
Another Z I own is a black that is opted exactly as I would have back in the day. There is something menacing about the look of black cars.
My blue/blue rs/ss L34 is my favorite although it's not a Z.

I'll take that triple black Z28 over any color that i have seen.
As long as it came that way from day one.
Very nice!!
An RS is always sweeter on a Z28 too.

I think one of the best Z28 combinations is the ZL2 hood without spoilers. We Vintage Certified a survivor that Ken Pascoe owned and it looked fantastic. It was FG with white interior. I'd love to own that car.

All I can say is it was a pleasure certifying your car which achieved our top level Legend Award. That car is absolutely like new and stunning!
This years MCACN show is shaping up to be a spectacular event, possible even more impressive than the previous two. The Vintage Cerification program will have some killer cars going through, such as a 70 Challenger TA under 1000 miles, 66 SS Chevelle like new, 73 TA-SD with about 1000 miles, 81 Z28. When was the last time you saw an unrestored Z16 survivor??? This is a can't miss event so if you can make the MCACN show please stop by the Vintage Cerification area and see our certification team in action with these wonderful cars, and a few others.

I just saw this on e-bay today and of all the 1969 Z/28s I have owned this was my favorite color combination but you have to see it in person to really appreciate it. When I had the car it did not have the original vinyl top and the guy that sprayed the silver was one of the best that I had seen at the time. If I was old enough in 1969 to order a 1969 Z/28 I would have never ordered this color combination, it would have been black with black comfort weave interior. I also snuck in a picture of a car I wish I had not sold because I listened to my wife. It was a factory dash-dash paint code black on black 73 Z/28. My wife thought it looked like the Bat mobile.

Sure Charley. I've got the hood priced a bit on the high side, but if you buy it I'll throw the car in for free. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif
Bruce, we saw it on OKC Craigslist yesterday. Figured it was probably fake, but decided to go have a look anyway since it was close. When we got there and realized it was the 2nd owner and that he had owned it for the past 37 years, it started getting interesting <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif He had the invoice from Adams Chevrolet, Norman, OK showing he paid $1895 for it in Feb 1974. The car has been right here within a 15 mile radius ever since. It still has the original drivetrain but was repainted in the 80's and the interior freshened up. And of course, just like most of us, back in the 80's he added headers and chromed the hinges, alt bracket, etc. But he still had the original hood, exhaust manifolds, air cleaner, etc. His wife was with him when we met at the bank today. She told me that the last time she remembered riding in the car was when her husband and other two children picked her and their new baby up from the hospital! Here's a picture I took of them today...their last photo with the car they called a part of their family. And a couple more from the Craigslist ad.

It had the original argent grill painted black, probably done back when nobody cared. It was one of those tell tale signs it was the real thing..as were the original Z-28 emblems.
And yeah I guess there was a lot of wrong stuff on it..It was never restored but it had been 'repaired' over the years, Complete born with drive-train. Orig alt, carb even shifter as I remember. I still own this 29k org mile JL8 w/one repaint by the 2nd owner in 1981 who also installed a x-ram at the time and yes the interior is all org. I currently have the cowl hood for sale and I am putting the org flat hood back on. Documented with POP and window sticker from Thomas Chevrolet in Bedford, PA, also featured in Jerry's book.

Thanks, Mike, As soon as I sell the cowl hood that is on the car the sooner the flat hood goes on. This photo will have to do for now documenting the return of the flat hood. Dale, the 2nd owner almost ruined this car back in 1981 when he had it painted and installed the x-ram. He went to a local fab shop and wanted them to tub the car and the owner of the shop talked him out of it. The only reason Dale painted the car was because of a few small door dings and paint chips from parking the car next to others in a parking area when he went to work.

Sometimes those short filters can bite ya. There is not enough air that circulates around the carb so the carb can become flooded because the ac lid is way to close to the air breather tube in the front of the carb. Like putting your hand over the carb to flood it. Found that out on my old corvette around 3,000 rpm or so.

On my 67 Z28 with a crossram and factory cowl induction air cleaner (which is about as low as you can go), we had to raise the flat hood about 3/8 in the rear to keep it from hitting. I think functionally, it is best to use a cross ram hood. JMO, Ed

WE HAVE A STANDARD LOW PROFILE AIR CLEANER ON OUR CROSSRAM WITH THE ORIGINAL FLAT HOOD. NO CLEARANCE ISSUES. THE ENGINE IDLES AND RUNS VERY STRONG. JEFF

Bruce - just take the link you posted above and when you put your post together, clik the 4th icon over - a drop down box appears, select the 1st option ( insert a non-floating image)- another box will open up - paste your link to that box and wala!

I just love a 1969 Z28 in any color with a Vinyl roof with the RS option.
I think the 1969 Camaro had the best looking Vinyl roof ever put on a pony car <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif
Me too.
RS option was a Homerun.

Sam,
Right after my 50th birthday, a bunch of friends and family came out for the 4th of July. I had been wanting to set up a couple of pictures and we did it on 7/7/07. Most of my Z/28s are with friends now. Here's the other pic.
