Wire feed spray welding for rust repair

Anyone used wire feed welding for rust repair? What are the pros and cons? It looks like a good alternative to replacing the panel. Dustin

Ive looked into this for Welding up a pitted deck surface on some SBC 186 heads. Never seen it used on body panels.

Are you trying to weld up small holes in rusted areas?

Local guy used to do it...It was a zinc spray system that he had. He got it repo'ed and sold off when the bank took his shop back. He kept the gun from my understanding but the base got sold.

I guess it worked on the theory that the Zinc could be flame sprayed on and would encapp the rust and stop the rust from rusting more. You could build up the Zinc also and make it as thick as you wanted. Kinda like a new version of lead. This was 10 years ago.

I have a little rust around the lip of my quarters so I bought full quarters to fix it right. I hate to replace the entire panel because I would lose the factory spot welds and the rust is minimal. The place I was thinking of using is a rust busters franchise and gives a 10 year guarantee. I have seen before and after pics and it looks to good to be true so I am afraid to pull the trigger.

Why not try it and get back to us with the results? If it doesn't work as you thought, the full quarters will be standing by. I would think the number one thing to do would be completely kill that rust before using this spray weld technique.

I had a fender spray welded after the vendor sandblasted all the rust away from the bad area....The build up of "material" needs to be ground flush and probably skim coated with
normal filler etc..............

Chickened out and installed the n.o.s quarters. After closer inspection understand why these cars rusted out after few a thousand miles.
