Hi folks, i'm still a newbie here, but wanted to post a couple of pics of my car. It is hardly a numbers or mint car, but I still like it. It was a Rally V-8 model, automatic. It now has a built 350, decent Comp Cam, TH-400 with decent shift kit, line lock, Hurst Quarter-stick, MSD-6A, AutoMeter gauges/Tach/Shift light, Billett pulleys, catch can, EP aluminum heads & intake, Holley HP 750 DP, March Industries brackets, Cool-Can, 4" glass cowl hood, Hooker ceramic coated headers (which are awesome-cool to the touch within 5 minutes) sub-frame connectors, 12 bolt posi on 373 gears (had 410) and Flowmaster 40's. It is a mild "groundshaker" and is a fun Saturday night car. Interior is very good, all the chrome trim is present. I am making it a Yenko clone (but not a poser) maybe tribute would be a better description? Honestly I'm just making it as I like it. These are the only recent pics I have. (It does have the Yenko emblems on the fenders and trunk now) Will update pics over the weekend.

Looks like that Nova can Rally some troops. Remember, your Nova will be a "Different Day 2" one day.

Where did you mount the MSD box?

Mayhem

It is currently on the firewall, just haven't moved it to a better location yet. My previous car (73 Camaro 427) it was mounted inside.

The Nova looks great, how do you like the new Holley HP Carbs, is the idle quality greatly improved from the older version carbs.

Mayhem
11-25-2011, 09:03 AM
Thanks.

I am still tweaking it a bit, as I replaced the plugs to a little cooler plug the day after the carb, and am in the middle of doing the plug wires. I had some trouble getting the right plugs, as it is an '80 Vette motor, with aluminum heads. There are several options, which include a shorter and longer plug. I ended up going with the longer one = AC Delco 41-602 gapped at .045. The old ones were gapped at .041, so it runs a little different now.

But yes, it does seem to idle better, or at least make the cam lobe more of a gallop.
I had it burning tires through all of first gear and into half of second before I changed plugs. Now I have to tweak it again to get it exact.

I looked at the "Avenger" models with the pretty anodized body, but the HP version was more like a Dominator, with 4 matching barrels instead of the stock looking butterfly primary portion. The HP's have no choke, are mechanical secondaries, and are "street/strip" rated with an all business design.

Mayhem
11-25-2011, 09:06 AM
P.S. "burning tires" into second gear on pavement equates to the picture at the top of this page for what it will do on a well treated track! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

I need 2 of these for 540 cu. inch Merlin engines on my Fountain Powerboat, I am looking for good idle qualty, Holley says with the 4 corner idle adjustment & new designed air bleeds that at idle it is more tunable and sharper, that is what I was curious about compared to the older version Holley carb.

PxTx
11-25-2011, 03:08 PM
My sister has an HP on her camaro, it probably 8 years old. It is def richer out of the box than a standard Holley.

The air bleeds make it a lot more tunable. If you are going to run two of them, you'll have to really look at the idle circuit. May be able to rune wiht a bleed, if they give you thant ability. When my dad and I tune the old 1850 600 cfm carbs for dual quads we would tyically put a small restrictor wire in the liquid line of the idle circuit in the metering block.

Mayhem
11-25-2011, 06:51 PM
Mike, as you state, with the 4 corner adjustments, once you get the floats happy, they are awesome, and seem to be much more responsive and fine tuned than say a Demon.
They of course have the interchangeable power valve on the primary as well.

Looks like you're having fun with it. What is next, dealer tag frame?

Mayhem
12-12-2011, 02:50 AM
Nah, I think I have reached my limit of "Yenko" titled items. The 3 badges and the dealer decal are enough.
I was toying with the idea of the white 69 Yenko stripe kit, but I think I will hold off.
I have been having fun with it though. Now that I have a few sets of plugs and that new carb, this thing has got to be running 12.0's or possibly even 11.90's in the cool night air.
It is running very strong. Timing is set for peak performance, not driving. I am getting the MSD adjustable timing setup so I can dial it in for normal or performance conditions. I'm lovin it!

PxTx
12-12-2011, 02:59 AM
I remember your post on plug gap and i see the MSD in the picture above. Is it working? I thought it wasn't a CD ignition, but an MSD has a capacitive discharge.

Mayhem
12-12-2011, 06:07 AM
I guess I didn't catch the "capacitive discharge" reference before. Yes it is working great. I am very close to being confident enough to run it down the track a few times. But this likely won't occur until Spring.
It may still need an electric fuel pump. It was falling on its face at the top of 2nd gear, but that seems to have resolved with the new carb and plug gap change.
I think the adjustable MSD timing control, and a new set of tires will be the final tweak. But since it's Winter, I will likely pull the trans and check things, replace the U-joints, etc. Safety check mostly.
But overall, right now I am very happy with it, and almost positive it would carry the front wheels all of 1st gear on the track.

PxTx
01-16-2012, 03:37 PM
I'll be interested to what you have to say Eric. I run around wiht about 9 psi on the street and crank it up to 11 while at the track to make sure the dual quads are fed.

VintageMusclecar
01-16-2012, 04:21 PM
Not criticizing, just curious. I've always ran ~6.5-7 lbs and never had an issue as long as that pressure could be maintained, but I have seen issues with needle & seats with >8-9 lbs.

My $.02: volume>pressure

Plowman
01-16-2012, 08:16 PM
I found that if you some time use Viton-tipped needle that they will hold 13-lbs on the street. Hope this helps. But VintageMusclecar I found has never lead anyone incorrect. *Paul

Thanks.

The psi is indeed high. I am switching electric fuel pump and regulator this weekend hopefully.

Mayhem
03-12-2012, 04:59 AM
OK, been a little while. Swapped to the electric fuel pump, regulated at 7.5 psi, the other 6.5 goes in the return line. Doing better.
Had an overheating issue last weekend in gridlock traffic. Currently have the hood off, and have carved out the opening in the back of the cowl more so it can really breathe.
I also added a Spectre cold air intake setup with dual snorkels and tubes to the front radiator core, pulling cool air in from the grill, but threw the bug catcher on while the hood is off.
These are a couple pics from today, after 4 days of rain we were ready to get out and stretch.

Rear is a Mickey 28x10x15 model 6640 Sportsman SR.
Front is a 26x6x15 6652 I believe.
The only mod to the rear was previous owner slightly cut the inner rear fender well maybe 1/4 ".
There is less than 1/2" of space between wheel wells inner and outer.

I am so ready to build out my next level engine.
It will be fixed in time either way. Fix the head/valve issue, new set of heads, whatever.
I am NOT missing the Power Tour!

Mayhem

No problems found. We think the bolts on the intake were not torqued correctly and they vibrated loose, allowing coolant to leak around into the valves/cylinder. This likely occurred during or after a weekend of running it down the track 8-9 times. There was no signs or sounds of trouble, until it fowled the plug while filling that cylinder with coolant.
Putting it back together now, flushing the oil, etc.
Will find out for sure over the weekend.

Still running like a champ. Here is a shot of the front spoiler I fabricated from some brushed aluminum.
It came out pretty good and is very functional, pushing air up into the bottom of the radiator, and I prefer it over the fiberglass/plastic "Randys" ones.
It will also cut any varmint in half that gets in the way!
Material cost $7.00 at a swap meet, and a few hours fabrication in the home garage.
(I put the M decal on it for a few days for the guy that I had to get to bend it on his metal break in his shop for appreciation)

Finished the Dana rear. Yanked the 496 Dart out and found I was better off going ahead with the full swap.
Skip White Performance 555 Dart being built, about a week from delivery at this point. Fully tweaked
Brodix BB2 heads, all new everything from the Quickfuel 1050 down.
I am going to stick with the 400 trans with brake for now, and add a Gearvendor behind it.
Replacing the 4200 stall with a 3500, which is the minimum the cam calls for.
New steering box, front end work, new 5 pt. harnesses, roll cage pads, new dual fans in shroud, etc.
Just hope we can get it on the road by the end of this month and beat the 100+ temps!

Well it was more of a pending failure than a choice.
The car was built for the track, especially the engine.
Even though it was putting 800=HP at the crank, it was on its last legs.
This new one should be pushing 800 as well, with the heads and mods done.
We keep hitting BS delays. Having trouble finding the right ARP head bolts
for a Dart Big M block and Brodix BB-2 heads. Every other configuration in the
world is in the books, except that one. It had studs previously that went into
the water jackets. This new block does not. It just arrived Friday. Got a little
done Friday evening before we got to the head bolt issue.

I'm trying my friend.
You know the story...
cubic dollars.
Built a distribution plate and mounted relays and stuff today.
Mounted the new trans cooler, worked on a mock up of the new console.
A little at a time. Once we get the right head bolts it will move pretty quick I think.
We might have those resolved tomorrow if our local shop has ones that will work.
We are having to measure and match to exactly what it needs.

UPDATE-
Got the correct studs in, heads on (with the layered gaskets at $153!!! Ouch),
intake on, timing cover on, old valve covers on until final install into car,
and oil pan on for mock up and to keep from dripping any oil.

Also worked on new radiator and mounting into bay, numerous other mods.
Hope to work on it every night this week and be done by Friday.

Old valve covers on just for mock up purposes and to avoid oil leakage.

It is getting there. Spent all of tonight working on wiring and cleaning up previous "birds nest" wiring.
Got the panel all wired up, tested everything and all is working. Having to make custom aluminum panels
for the cowl to mount my gauges outboard like the red one was.
Turned motor over just checking the starter. Sounded good, no shims needed.
Looks like tomorrow we will get the carb on and fire it up.
I was busy enough today that I didn't take any pics.

Oh I am my friend. I am. Got around 150 miles on it now.
A Highway Patrol buddy scared the crap out of me, pulling up along side me on the Interstate yesterday.
When I looked over and saw him flying a thumbs up and mouthing "that is bad F'ing a$$" I was greatly relieved.
Of course we had to pull over and chat for a bit. He loved it, I roared off from the side of the road when we left, him and his rider were videoing and taking pics, other traffic was freaking out. It was comical.

We reset the valves/lifters yesterday, re-tightened all bolts accessible, and checked voltages to the rear batteries. All is good. I love it. It took me 51 years to get the car I wanted, and I am loving it.
Can't wait until I can get a set of rims/slicks, and take it down the track. It should do low 10's.

Thanks Paul. Obviously no traction on the street. Was just playing around on the first nice day in a while,
after just replacing the radiator. Was really hoping to get it to the track this year, and there is a street meet this weekend,
but track temps have cooled significantly. We still have some warm nice days left, but the ground has gotten cold until Spring.
SO I will probably not rush it and just wait until then. I hope to get some GoPro video up soon, as opposed to the crappy phone vid.

7.20 on street tires, pump gas, foot brake. Not bad for an unplanned run.
I guess 0-100 in 7 seconds isn't too shabby for street dress. Should be able to squeeze out 6.80's or better easily.

Oh, and this is with full exhaust. You can also hear the tires spinning half way down the track.

Ditch that air cleaner. Those things are junk. Dad had one on a '76 Nova (his first car) and it backfired and the filter melted into the carb.

Mayhem
06-17-2016, 09:27 PM
Yeah I know. I have seen them catch fire. When I got the car it had an 8 3/4" x 1" round one on it.
I felt it was choking it for air. Being the factory hood with the inner beams, this is all else that would fit, for now.
I could only find 10", 12", and 14" filters. It is temporary, but even it hits the hood. It needs a shorter intake or taller hood.
Every car I have ever had has had a 4" cowl hood. But I hate to alter the stock look of this one. I will find something soon.
Thanks though.

JRC99
06-18-2016, 04:59 PM
No problem. Would hate to see a car like this catch fire. Probably one of my biggest automotive fears. If you must change the hood, go for an L88 scoop!
