Old boxes of Metalflake

Looking for old boxes of silver and sky blue Metalflake from the early to mid 70's. Keep and eye out at the swaps.

Would this be in sheets or in jars to be added to paint?

They are in cellophane in cardboard boxes. The flake they have been making for the last 10-15 years or so is polyester and has a different sheen and sparkle to it. True metal Metaflake has not been made for quite some time.

I know I have some orange and there MAY be some silver buried in a box in the garage. It's true METALFLAKE brand that I bought in the early 70s when I was painting motorcycles. You're right, it came in cellophane packets but I transfered it to 'Orville Redenbacher' plastic popcorn jars. More substantial packaging! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

those are liquid toners from a mixing machine. prolly 10-15 years old at least . if theyve been sealed up well they can still be used with no issues. only problem being is there usually dependent on binders and balancers to used properly. i ran a dupont/sikkens paint store for over 15 years. and i used 20 year old lacquer toners for mixing with no probs at all.

Dave, let me check with my cousin. I know he had alot of what you are talking about. He even had the real 24kt gold flake in a can from the 50's or 60's?

Dave, my cousin has blue, midnight blue, kelly green and silver. He said that it is the metal flake brand.

I would say sometime 1970's or 80's. Not sure if they are good or not but I know some painters who have cracked open 35+ year old Metalflake concentrated candy tints and they were still good.

Sure thing Dave. And yes, I have 20-30yr old lacquer tints that are still good.

Are you starting from scratch? If you are, theres modern stuff today that works like the old stuff. I know we used to get it in 50# boxes as of 5 years ago.


I did a roof 7 years ago with it and had to burried with a ton of clear....like 12-15 coats if I remembered right. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

The new flake, well at least anything made in the last 8-10 years, maybe longer back is plastic polyester while the original 1970's flake is of course real metal. There is a huge difference in appearance between the original and the new stuff-in terms of the shape, sparkle and color. Most people would not care but I'm hoping to find the original stuff if possible.

You could get the new stuff that is metal. The stuff I used was from a raw products company named &quot;Huls&quot; (sp?) We used about 30 different colors and sizes in our familys paint company that we made from raw products.

The stuff I used was a big gold flake product... It was a close dead ringer to the old school HOC stuff that Kosmo used to use back in the day. One might even ask Kosmo since he is still painting these days in his shop in South Minneapolis.
