I finished building my 69 around 1992 and it has been a blast to have and do not ever plan on getting rid of it, but would like to make some changes for the fun of it. It is a real SS small head car, correct colors and almost an all original red interior, hope you like it.
Being 41 I was brought up in the day 2 era and remember cruising Hempstead turnpike with my uncle in his 1971 Chevelle. I can still hear the sound of his fingers flicking the Hurst shifter at stop lights. Here is a list of things that I thought were cool.

Hood Pins
Toe tabs
Cragars
Pinstriping
Ladder bars
Sun tach on the hood
Cool can
USA-1 front plate

I would love to see some pics of what you have done, and any ideas of where I should go, and what could be to much, thanks in advance.

Sam: Love the aluminum wheels and I just bought a set off Jason on this site for my olds 442. Here is a picture one month after the original owner bought the car with the same wheels. I will have that same look on my 442 next time anyone sees the car. It has poverty caps now the way it was ordered. Day two stuff is in now and very popular.

Thanks for the compliments, Mockingbird that nova is amazing the one picture of all the parts in the driveway is my all time favorite right now that could be a magazine add. I really cant wait to start collecting parts this winter.

I made a complete list of all of the cliches of the day2 era down to hanging my High School Graduation tassel on the rear view mirror, but what would be to far.

day2killa, Sam does not tell ya but ALL those parts are originally from his Deuce when he bought it. He restored to an even higher drgree ALL those "original" Day-2 parts. He is the official president of............Day-2. There are a couple other guys on here that are CEO's and CFO's of Day-2 also like Dave Miller and Don White IMO. You are doing good. Keep up the good work and keep the questions coming.

Looks like you've got some nice pics to reference for the correct speed parts. Anyone still have the tow bar used on the cars?

My pop and I copied some 69 Chevelle tow tabs a few years back. They seem to be one of the hardest ones to find. Have you started collecting parts?

I have what I was told in the 80's, is that the motor I have in my 68 Camaro was from Scotts old race car from the early 70's . This info had come from Bobby lasordo of Wildwood auto body & Ferd loy who was one of his employees back in the day. When I first got it, it had a tunnel ram with 660 center squirters & was put in a 69 SS but now its in my 68 SS. Anyone know anything else about this motor or what kinda car Scott had it in, It's a 468. It kicks ass & runs 10.80's

Well I have made some progress, after alot of research I realized that my fondest memories of hot rods started around 10, I remember cutting out pictures and hanging them on my closet door and I had two uncles that really built some great cars when I was young. So my infuential time period starts in 1980 and with research I rediscovered the Car Craft street machine nations of that era. So I am not doing a period correct day 2 replication but instead a street machine nationals car, pre tubbed era. I am no where near done or is it perfect but some work is complete so I thought I would share some pics.

Something cool about the work done is some of the parts are true family original that were donated to the project.

Also very fond of the '77-'early 80's era especially the Car Craft Nat's.. Here are some pics of SOME of my SMN's collection but not all. I collect the '72 and '77-'84 era... I have way more stuff than pictured. Have some of the really rare stuff no one sees anymore like the sponges they would gave out to wash the cars with the nat's log imprinted on them. Have all the decals and license plate frames etc. Lot's of unused tickets etc.

I became personal friends with Lee Laskey who worked with Special Events, the promoter of the show. Purchased from Lee many of the insider stuff the general public never received like the "official" badges, the street machine survey booklet that was handed out to venders that sort of thing.

LOL, a few of my frisbees have dog teeth marks in them...

I really think the golden age of the CC Nat's was 77-81 when it was at Indianapolis. Cars were still basic street driven cars..cars we could all relate to back then and today. Most still had true Day 2 parts on them and were modified much like the early to mid 70's. Starting in the early 80's era the cars just got silly with one upmanship...c/mon fuel funny car style cages in street cars.. Cars just became hokey...caricatures if you will.

The earlier Nat's still had wheel barrow races and spark plug changing contest..more laid back and fun. People just lounged around. Later ones turned into more of a full on competition with the participants, professionalism might be a better term? and I think some of the earlier charm of the events went away.

For instance I remember when a super hot car came rolling in people would literally run, yes run as in sprinting in large groups to see the car park etc. Today it's just hohum one of many. Even I don't get that real excitement anymore at events. The early Nat's was one of the first real places where folks from rural, less urban areas saw some really nice cars...stuff we only saw in magazines. Maybe that is why these early shows are so special to so many people.

Not trying to highjack the thread here, but I have a question for everyone to weigh in on.

What has happened to kids these days? Has social media replaced going out in town and hanging out with each other in person?

I know they have a lot more things to occupy their time, video games, internet, etc., but I can't see how those things can be more fun than spending time with each other, together.

How can texting: What's up?..lol...omg.., be more fun than a car load of friends experiencing what Saturday night might bring?

Hello all, My first post here although I have been checking out the rides posted. I lived the Day2 era cruising hempstead tpke, Burger King in Bethpage L.I., NY National Speedway, Westhampton Raceway and apparently I'm reliving it again with my 70 chevelle! I really like the look of your 69 chevelle day2killa with the cragars, tow tabs etc. I knew a guy from East Meadow back in the late 70's that had the same car, white , black vinyl top, small block with a 4 spd. His name was Gary, had a gas station I think off Newbridge Road? North of Hempstead tpke. The green 70 malibu in other posts is sweet too! I thought I was the only one that dug this stuff, lol. Anyway, I'll try and post some pictures for your reviews in the next day or so.

Nice chassis build pictures above, havent seen the ladder bar brace though but it makes sense since they would tear out the frame at the bracket locations. Are those Lakewoods? NMW? NOS, restored or new? Looks good with the yellow color, just do the tow bar brackets to match.

My car has a high compression 454, LS-7 clone, solid roller, modern AFR 305 cyl heads (I know not correct for the day) but I wanted the most power and none of the issues with the old alum GM heads cracking and breaking stud bosses. The intake is an early 80's edelbrock victor 2r with the angled carb (gets alot of comments at car shows), 850 dp, accel dist and ign coil triggering an msd 6al hidden under dash. Clutch is a mcleod diaphram, trans is a 2:62 1st super t-10 with an iron case and center support. 4:10 gear out back. Had a centerforce clutch and had big issues with the release at high rpms. I found the spring assisted ring would move off center and cause uneven disengagement pressures blocking the shift. So far no problems with the conventional clutch diaphram.
Anyhow, thats whats in the car for anyone interested.

I'm digging this modern take on the Day 2 Chevelle thread. Nice job by everyone. The NMW ladder bar brace was a separate part number, and I believe is came out later but I would love to have one when I put my bars back on.

Glenn, sound like a really fun car. I love the Lakewood red rollbar along with everything else. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing more.

Hi Glenn..

Kick ass car. Wow. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

The AFR heads are fabulous from what I hear and I'd to try some too. I have two small questions...I think on most of the AFR heads, there is no intake bolt between the top of the ports on a BBC (most aftermarket manufacturers leave it out). I can't quite tell in the photos if your old E-Brock intake was setup for the bolts. How did you deal with it? Also, how did the headers fit with the raised exhaust ports?

Thanks in advance.

Wayne

Paul, I thought the brace was used on the camaro leaf spring ladder bars but I could be mistaken. Wayne, yes the AFR heads are not drilled for the "extra" bolts the old intakes have. I just cut down 4 intake bolts, used a hi strength silicone and glued them in place, lol. Looks correct and since they really are not needed its all good. As far as the raised exhaust ports and headers, that was interesting. The headers are 2" tube Hookers and hit the frame on both sides. So I bolted them on and on a lift pryed them over a bit towards the inside using a long pipe! Well they fit ok then but prying the headers caused them to crack at the flange welds. So out they came and I tig welded all the flange ports. Oh and the header paint is another story.

The ladder bars on my post car chassis are NOS NMW pieces that I had powdercoated yellow. They came in red oxide primer but I like the yellow. I've got the tow tabs (powdercoated black) and a tow bar (on the way).

James, the cross bar was in a different box than the rest of the ladder bar kit, right? I've only seen literature without the bar included as the standard kit. Later literature calls it out as an optional item. Do you think your bars came with the cross bar as one complete kit?

They look great!

Glenn, great ride! I have been continplating how far to go to a drag look on my chevelle, I really like that you did the cool can under the hood I have an NOS one and just have not installed, now I think it needs to be done. Its funny I have some pics of your car one in a garage and one at a evening car show. Do you have any old pics of Long Island cars?

They were in the box with the ladder bars and accessories. The box was open however and could have been put in there after the fact.

killa, You know its funny but not many folks I knew took many pictures of cars back in the day except maybe a few polaroids of their pride and joy or at the track or maybey a car show. I took some pictures of my own stuff but that was about it. How times have changed, lol. I do remember when portable vhs video cameras came around, had to carry the the recorder part and hold the camera to tape stuff, but thats another discussion for another topic.
Thanks for the compliments on the black 70. The cool can is something that alot of "race" cars used, the original ones were just aluminum cans, I think Mr Gasket made them then. No cork insulation like the later morosos had, then they evolved into blue color plastic tanks.
I know theres some pictures out there of my black car at a few shows and my other 70 that I've had since 1976. That car was the real deal Day2 back in the day.

Wheelhop, do you have a plan to keep from tearing the suspension arms out of their mounts?

PxTx
09-08-2012, 01:47 PM
I think that only applies to leaf spring cars.

TheNovaMan

But you're still adding a second point of rotation to the suspension. You've got the point where the upper and lower control arms would intersect if they were longer, and you've got the front mount of the ladder bars. At best, it will bind, and at worst it will break something.

I have saw those Ladder-Bars work on hard race cars with no breakage, did see axles and spider gears break. Yes it will bind.

Back in the day before anyone really knew the factory 4 link could work if set up right, the NMW ladder bars were usually put on these cars as the only drag racing traction device available (besides air bags or the no hop bars). My red 70 was drag raced alot with ladder bars and 2 pieces of the frame were pulled out on each side right where the front brackets bolted up. No doubt due to the conflicting angles as explained, or possibly the bolts just loosened up over time and whala. But with that said, the car did hook with a 4 speed and alot of abuse (and broken parts). The ladder bars were welded to the axle tubes as well to keep things from rotating. My friends 70 chevelle convertible also had the same setup and was launched at 6000 rpms with a stick shift alot of times as a dedicated race car, also took its toll on the chassis. But since were reliving those times as Day 2 cars, ladder bars just have to be on them again! I would think the limited use most of our cars see today, unless we are drag racing with stick shifts, frame damage is unlikely to happen.

This car is a 4 speed and the ladders wrecked the frame, cracked on both sides. It saw a lot of drag strip action however. Ive removed all the speed parts to restore the car. Reverse Day 2 I guess.

This shows how little these companies and racers, (at that time), understood instant centers and
the way the suspensions where designed to work. Had anyone had the foresight to market
tubular, rear control arms with rod ends, they could made a ton of money after they proved
how well they worked.

Maybe just leave out the front bolt where the ladder bar pivots?

Glenn70

Possibly if you left out the factory lower control arms and made the ladder bars the new low control arms it might work but I wouldnt be brave enough to try it. You'd probly need a diagonal cross bar similar to a real ladder bar race car and a better front bar crossmember.
BTW since a day 2 nova would have traction devices are you running slapper bars on yours? Nothin like a set of lakewoods peeking out from under the car to inspier day2 woosiness, <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/crazy.gif

Hemicolt

The upper control arms hold the rearend from moving side to side.
As long as the front bolt hole on the ladder bars are at the same height as the lower control arm mounting point, and the ladder bars are at the same angle, the instant center wouldn't change enough to fool with it.
Whenever I get around to installing the NMW ladder bars on my Chevelle, I will not bolt them down hard to the axle tubes and will weld a stop onto each side of the bars to keep them from walking side to side.

This winter I'll be building a set of the 2.5" square design with J-bolts (many thanks to copo69's friend Warren for the measurements), and they'll actually contact the front spring eye like slapper bars should.

I think they{long and hit spring eye bolt} started about 1970 those particular ones came out. I like making long homemade ones before the year 1970,so go for it.

many fast coil spring cars in those days used air bags and not always ladder bars. The control arm bushings were usually replaced with the solid versions. I think Moroso and Lakewood carried them.

I don't think coil spring cars would tell or show all what they did for "Traction",there magic fix. One coil spring car we ran, with good traction, we found it took the drivers side moter mount frame out. This is back in the day.

Interesting trick. So, in theory it would momentarily heft a portion of the car's weight to the passenger side of the car (am assuming some sort of engine limiting strap <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif ?). Bet the frame really twisted on the launch (w/o a roll bar). I suppose in effect you would have a net loading of the right/rear tire which might help the launch. So, did it help Paul?

PxTx
09-11-2012, 03:45 PM
I think the launch took out the frame mount, as on cracked or broke.

Plowman
09-11-2012, 04:08 PM
It was pulling up Sam{all the time you are on it}. The net loading of the right/rear tire is up off the ground. Because of the drive shaft rotation{or engine rotation}. Not to get too long a front and rear engine plates would help{called motor plates}. Hope that helps Sam,if not pm me your phone number.

Imagine twisting a rag in your hands. The engine is twisting in one direction while the rearend is twisting in the opposite direction. Pass. side air bag helps to keep that side of the rearend from climbing up into the car. Roll cages, boxing the inside of the frame helps control the torsional twist as well.
Here is a good video showing the twisting motion:

Can you give me some info on your wheel and tire combo, please?
Car looks great and I'm looking for a similar wheel and tire package for my Chevelle.

Hi Damien
The fronts are 15x4, tires are Moroso drag 710/15
The rears are 15x8, tires are M&H Musclecar street/strip 275/60/15

The morosos are not very street friendly, very thin sidewalls and lightweight. You would be better with a dot tire for safety. The rear tires are ok as long as you are not driving in wet weather, tread is shallow and thin. Basically this car is driven short distances in sunny weather!

Thanks Glenn. I am tossing up which way to go as I plan on driving my '69 regularly, although not in the rain. I will definately have a look at the M&H's, though.
