Canadian Duties

Hey all,

I shipped an EBay sale to Canada a few months ago via FedEx and apparently the recipient didn't pay the duties like he agreed to do. I am hoping it's "miscommunication" but it looks as though they will stick me with the bill if he doesn't pay.

I should know better - this happened to me in the past and I got stuck with a $300 bill.

Is there any sure way to avoid this next time?

That's odd... I thought they didn't release the parcels until duty has been paid/collected???

I'd also like to know the buyer, so I know who is giving the rest of us Canadians a bad name!

The person who stiffed me on the Canadian duties was Ebay member vickstar.2007 (this was in 2008).

Tony, was it "duties" or the "brokerage fees"? When I ship sold stuff to the U.S. there is a spot on the Fedex customs form as to whether the shipper or recipient will pay the brokerage fees. I didn't do that on one item years ago and about two months later I get a bill for the brokerage fees. That did not stop the package from being delivered though. I also feel the duties have to be paid before the package is delivered. Interesting?????

As a Canadian I've been billed for duty weeks later in the mail after paying in full what I was supposed to on items I've brought into Canada, not happily but certainly never the sellers fault..
The shipping co. or broker if one was used should coordinate the collection of all fees by those responsible and not try to stick the shipper/seller w/ any mistakes made by them..
Make them show you specifically where your responsibility for this is noted on anything you agreed to also be sure to remind them it was you who chose to employ their firm and will not in the future if this is how they operate..

I send most of my items via FedEx but if I have anything go to Canada, I ship it through USPS with NO issues.
