1969 Yellow Yellow Z28 RS project.
A good friend and sYc member turned me on to this Z28 a few years ago.
Most would have passed on the project and probably parted out the car, but we are just not smart enough to do that.
The car has been delivered to a top secret restoration facility.

Wow nice project, the Z28 is such a bautifull car to restore. Can you upload some pic of the body, so we can see the actual car before the and after. Good luck!

What are you going to do about interior? I'm trying to find enough people interested to do a run of the original Yellow madrid vinyl to make the interior more correct. The currant vinyl is too bright, wrong grain & too light weight...Joe

I'm guessing if you go to the secret shop now and didn't know the rarity of the yellow houndstooth interior you would think it was common in 1969 Camaros - ha...and by the time the shop get's done with this car they will be experts on the 714 interior... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

We needed to find a place which had interior trim code 714 NOS Material.
The Z28 is being restored by Schoenthaller Restorations in Iowa
Here is the Yellow Yellow Z28 as it was found.

Perhaps you recall a similar yellow/yellow Z/28 on the streets of Waukesha in the '70s-'80s. What a car-RS, black vinyl top, JL-8, ducted hood. Sat in the showroom at Dale Chev until April '70 when the owner of a race car chassis shop finally bought it. He kept it until '77 or so, sold it to brothers in Sussex who wrecked it. A friend of mine ended up with it, took off the vinyl top slapped it back together. No one noticed the front brakes were converted to single-piston. Ed C's BIL bought it; I managed to retrieve the front brake parts for him. He sold it a few years later; no idea where it is today.

Ray and I were just talking about that car this past weekend.
There is a Yellow Yellow 1969 Dale Duster L72 COPO too.
William
02-29-2012, 08:07 PM
There was also an orange/orange Dale COPO automatic. I worked with the original owner in the '70s and had an o/o Z/28 at the time. No one knew about COPOs in those days and I remember thinking his memory was a bit flawed. But former Dale employees remember it since it was in stock for almost a year.
BTW the yellow COPO received Z/28 stripes at Dale. They are known to have had at least two other L72 COPOs: Fathom Green/med green and Garnet Red/black, both 4-speeds. They received 2 ZL-1s from Gibb; #7 & #49. They raced #7 as "Li'l Brother Hugger" for a few years.
In addition to being one of the largest Corvette dealers Dale always had a good selection of HP cars. Don't hear much about Dale so I assume very little of it survived.

I knew about the yellow / yellow Z28 from you. Bill Dale is still around and keeps an office here in Waukesha. I went to high school with 2 of his sons. One is into restoring vintage Porsche's and has a fair amount of Dale Chevy items. The other is quite involved with Facebook and Farmville.($$$$$$$)
There is still some people around Waukesha that worked there back in the day and have many stories that mirror some things you have shared.

I know where a Yellow/Black vinyl top with Yellow Houndstooth Z/28 is available. It has a 302 in it now that is NOT the original engine, but the original IS included with the sale. It is a running, driving car that basically needs everything.
How many interiors like that were produced? Any idea? If someone really is interested in buying it, I know the owner pretty well. It is located in PA. I'm thinking somewhere around $30k as is would probably buy it.

I'm the one who was trying to get people interested in having it made but so far only 2 people have spoke up. That makes 3 with me. I guess everybody is content with the wrong material. I can't go back to the guy with only 3 people. We're talking about 20 grand to make a run of vinyl...Joe

My brother had a twin to your car in high school in 1972 - 1974. It had a 396 & A/C. It was sold new @ Celozzi / Ettleson Chevrolet in Elmhurst Illinois. Do you know where your car was sold new?

Don't know the history past the previous two owners. The car was found at a foreclosed house in West Phoenix 10-12 yrs ago. The house was on two acres and when the tractor with the brushhog was clearing the lot he ran into the left rear quarterpanel. The car was hidden by all the brush and they literally ran into it, had no idea it was there when they bought the property. Originally had a endura bumper, no spoilers.

We'll do our best to keep pics coming. It's a very cool piece. Obviously, going to take a while. We've been supplied with good used parts, or NOS body panels. Depending what we find after blasting in the floor, and trunk area, we'll most likely use AMD parts per the owner request.
While it may look bad in the pics, it actually isn't in the bad shape. We've see way worse.
It's setting on the trailer now, going to the blaster Monday if I get over this flu bug. (not pretty)

If you understand that those paint stick/ crayon marks were applied directly on bare steel B4 any primer, then sprayed over. The image is kind of locked in after stripping. However media blasting is not real forgiving if trying to save these for documentation.
On a car like this Z28, I would have chosen to use some stripper and or lacquer thinner to slowly do the fire wall. This way allot of the primer base is left in tact.
Here is the "N10" notice all the gray primer that bled through the caryon mark.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b107/m22mike/parts%20detail/COPO02831.jpg
And the Big yellow "OK" over top of "Z21"

Good call on the N10 and looks like a big OK in the upper right corner above the D80.

The firewall was stripped with soda. We've had good results with that process. I agree with Mike. Laquer thinner works well also. Media destroys the marks.

The firewall in the photo was stripped with plastic and that is all we use. It has worked good for us as long as you are careful and take it off slowly.

LS6.
I stripped Mark Mitchells 70 Z28 with plastic and had the exact same results. Unfortunately I wrote over all of the shadow marks with a sharpie and then took the photos so you will only see the sharpie markings.

The Floor pans and toe boards were better than I had expected as were the frame rails and most of the rest of the car.
