Take it to a local alternator/starter overhauler private business. You can spend some time talking to them and they will usually do a good job for you. I have a good guy near me and he has always been reliable. *Paul*

Can do your core for between 100-125 and a 5 day turaround time usually I believe alt restorers want 250 or so in addition to waiting several weeks or even months , its gotten kind of ridiculous.

I tried what you sugessted and they acted disinterested amd it took forever.
John sr died in Sept of last year and John Jr is getting overwhelmed and that put an xtra load on my guy who started getting all of his custumors. Combined with having surgery it put my guy behind. he said he would get mine done quickly so I have got it worked out. Same old problem people that are good at something are way behind. Probably should have just called him before I went to redneck.

No one is reskinning cases, stamping CZ on case, purtting in dated diodes or using nos when available ,and shellacking internal parts and using all plated hardware for 48.00 shipped lets not kid ourselves.

Save yourself a whole lot of money and just rebuild it in accordance with the Chilton's Motor manual. If you need more info PM me and I'll eMail you the how to info for free.

I've rebuilt my own alternators, starters and distributors since 1972. My Z/28 starter rebuild cost me $87 new armature included, my alternator was $35 and reconditioned the distributor was $56.

an excellent book for rebuilding all GM 1st and 2nd Generation Distributors is "Camaro Owners Handbook by HP Books"

This is a great source for Alternator parts http://www.madelectrical.com/

Here is some info on Chevy Wiring http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/chevymain1.shtml

Here is Info on how it all works
