Hey guys,
I have a small wager with a friend who seems to think that first gen nova's are 1962-1965, second gen are 66-67, and third gen are 68-72.
I tell him that first gen is 1962-1967 and second is 68-73.
Am I right or wrong. Does anyone have proof I can show my buddy?
Thanks, MM.

your friend is correct.

66 was a complete retool of all body parts, indicating a new generation

I thought GM based the gens off of the chassis. That is why a 69 Camaro is still a first gen car and not considered second gen. And, the more I think about it, the more I get confused as the second gen Camaro's had the same chassis as the first gen Camaro's.
Anyone up for a history lesson?

You'll need to pay up on this one! The '66-'67 is considered Gen 2, '68 - '74 is considered Gen 3, and '75+ is Gen 4.

I love info or history on any 62-67 Chevy, that's mostly what I've owned and driven for 35+ years.

What have you got to share? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Steves Nova Site said that"This[Steves nova site] website is not affiliated with GM,General Motors or Chevrolet in any capasity." So what do you think. I thing 62 to 67 is first gen car.

I agree with you. I think Steves nova site is the main contributor to this theory on second gens being 66-67. I am almost certain we are correct except I am having trouble looking for proof.

Sorry, I meant that if anyone had any info. on this subject if they could share with the rest of us. As far as I could remember (that does not mean much) I always reffered to second gens a 68-74. It was not till steves site came and override how the gens are categorized. Which, I believe may be completely wrong.
(not trying to prove anyone wrong, just trying to get to the bottom of this).

I've owned my chevelle longer than any other car, my brain thinks in terms. I think the door structure may hold clue, but that is my logic. You have to give guys working on the cars when they were new some credit

Long before the word "generation" was used to describe these cars, the 62-65 were the "box" Novas. The 66-67 were definitely NOT in that category. (and this was WAAAYY before Steve's Nova site and Algores Internet)

<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Is the line a little blurry? maybe. I can leave the anal exacto stuff for the C123+ guys. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

The whole generation discussion is stupid. If you follow the way "Steve's Nova Site" divides it up, which I do not, the gens should be as follows. 62-65=1st 66-67=2nd 68-72=3rd 73-74=4th and 75-79=5th. If they are going to make 66 & 67 a generation then the 73 & 74 should also be a generation.

That's just a disclaimer added to the site when Steve sold it to the new company that owns a few hundred other internet forums... It's lawyer talk. Kinda like "don't drink your battery acid". Sorry Paul <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif , It's 62-65, 66-67, 68-74 and then the disco years 75-79.

Tommy, when I worked at the Chevrolet Dealer in 1969, 62 to 67 were all GROUPED together, today I don't know how Chevrolet grouping them.

I don't know how Chevrolet Motor Division or General Motors in general 'classified' their products, and really don't care. The true 'enthusiasts' who really know the cars (such as Tommy, Marlin and others), and people who 'talk cars' with actual knowledge will definitely put the 66 & 67 in their own category.

Let the opinions continue. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

The 66-67 being called a 2nd gen is logical to me, but that is only an opinion. I don't ever recall them being called that prior to the internet/SNS. Does anyone have any popular car magazines pre 1995 which referred to those Novas as 2nd gen?

If there were called 2nd gen back then, when did it start? I doubt it was called that in 1966.

Personally.... 1962-1967, 1968-1974, and 1975-1979 are the generations.

The Novas grouped above all shared interchangable drive line components regardless of their body design.

Chevelle 1964-1967, 1968-1972, followed by 1973-1977.

Camaro 1967-1969, 1970-1981, etc.

Impala 1958-1964, 1965-1967, etc
