The wife and I with a car load of grandkids went racing Sunday

Took the Nova to see how it would do with the new torque converter. Even though very hot and humid, the Deuce could not have performed better. On a 6.95 dial, slowest pass was a 6.992 and the quickest a 6.949, 60’s 1.530s, all at just under 99 MPH. With the new converter the car is leaving quicker, so I kept tripping the red bulb.

Taylor and Devin ran their JR dragsters as well, with Devin beating older sister in the finals. Devin’s car was dead on all day, running close to his 11.30 dial. His lights were not great, but by running close to his dial, good enough to take home the first place trophy. Taylor’s car was having carb issues, so was not real consistent, ran a 9.60 then slowed to a 10.20, and she was like me, wanting to leave early.

All in all, a great day of racing.

Though it looks black, Devin's car is actually dark blue with a marble look.

As basic as it gets. This is the tower at Newport. Take notice of the PVC pipe and bucket. After a run, the two times slips are joined by a wooden clothes pin, then dropped into the bucket, where you, someone with you, or even someone with the other team gets your slip for you.

A couple of weeks ago the converter locked up in the Deuce, so I have spent the last two Sundays sorting things out with a new one. At Newport yesterday, the car did great, running a couple of 7.01s and a 7.031 on a 7.0 dial, and on the last pass, I even surprised myself with a .502RT on a .500 tree.

Though hot and humid out, the Deuce ran flawlessly again, taking top honors in the Pro class. Ran a 6.964 on a 6.95 dial in the finals.

Hopefully on the way to the Eastern Iowa Nova show this weekend we can stop by Eddyville and see how she does there.

Through the years Rob’s youngest son Drew often attends races with us, including the SCR, helping load and unload, check air pressure, etc. Once we got the JRs he would go and help with them. Well, Sunday he decided to try his hand at driving. We thought we were going just to get some seat time, but ended up doing a best of three match race with another JR. Drew lost the first round, but came back to take the next two.

This is Drew with his slip from the final round with a .545 RT. Says he is ready for his buddy Howie. LOL

Not for sure when we would find the time to get that serious, as we are knee deep in baseball with a little basketball mixed in.

Newport Dragstrip is located on a portion of an old WWII airstrip just outside of Newport, AR, a few miles Southwest of Jonesboro and Northeast of Little Rock. Besides the drag strip, there remains one landing strip, and the local college and State of AR use the former hanger area (pits on raceday) for a truck drving school and for CDL licensing. The state just repaved the hanger area, which makes that part really nice.

Since I was racing, and crewing for two JRs, the wife was in charge of pics, but forgot the camera.

Anyway, the first race, Drew (11) got Devin (13) off the line but I missed with Drew's dial in, so Devin ran him down, winning by .003. The next two Drew redlight, so he was kind of bummed. They are tied up this weekend, but with cooler weather here, plans are to get several more races in.

That evening was the index racing, I entered the Deuce in the .700 class, but she was running really good, so I was trying to kill 2 tenths. I went a couple of rounds, but lost when I broke out by .002. They then did a bracket race. Jamie Jarvis was there hanging out with us, he said dial it low and go for it, so I dialed a 6.75, lower then I had ever been and broke out with a personel best of a 6.731. On that pass I broke the trans, so I was done for the weekend.

Monday I got on the phone with a trans shop and was able to get them to put a rush on fixing my trans, as we were leaving for SCR15 on Friday. We got the Deuce together Thursday afternoon, everything seemed to be working as they should.

At RT66 the Deuce started off with a 10.90, then went a couple of mid 10.80s and finished the night with a 10:80 at 119.

At RT66 Rob was behind the wheel of Red Alert for the first time, so he made a couple of easy passes, well not too easy, as the first pass he did not get the slicks warm, thus was pretty much all over the track. I believe the second one was a 11.10 or so. Because of a leaking waterpump gasket, Rob was able to make any more passes.

Spent the afternoone at Newport with the Deuce, met this cool Camaro (runs 5.70s) in the Super-Pro finals. He got me a little off the tree, but the Deuce ran a 6.86 on a 6.85 dial, which caused him to breakout as he tried to run me down.
