Protecto-Plate Forgery ???

I have a 69 Camaro and Ive been searching how to authenticate the protecto-plate with no luck ... Millions of pics of forged and repo's but no solid info on how to tell the difference ... Anyone know some solid tell-tale signs to spot an authentic over a fake ???

There are a few guys on here who can tell. Kurt S and Mark C come to mind.

When I suspect a fake, I usually look up the address and see if it is even a real address. Amazing how many will be the middle of a lake, or in an industrial area. The fakers don't want to use a real address. It is too easy to check county land records and see who owned the home in 68 or 69.

at the county hall of records for the address on the protectoplate, you should be able to pull the current owner deed for that address and trace back from there to find the prior owners of the property. each deed will usually have some kind of verbage that says more or less the following...." being the same land and premises conveyed from john Doe to Joe Smith on Dec 25, 1969 in Deed Book 1234 page 326." Many deeds now can be pulled on-line on the county websites !! But most websites only go back so far..not to the 1960's...:( If not, you may be able to hire a title searcher to do this for you..they are specialists and will charge a small fee, but very reasonable... Reproduction POP have been big business for over two decades.

Some repros use original blanks, stamped from original machines, as well as original tape and glued to original vintage warranty booklets.

Bottom line is that it can be very difficult to tell a repro from real!

Most repro POPs which I have seen, had the correct owner info as well as VIN, but other pertinent engine, trans and rear codes had been changed.

Thats if the p.o.p was in a private parties name,i have several that were in a business name or a company.....etc

There are some good suggestions in this post that should give you some ideas on how to do more investigation on the original owner. Also noted was how difficult it is to spot a fake versus a real one. Agree with you posting some pics and soliciting feedback.
