It is from 1978 and I have one NOS in the box just like yours with all the attaching signs and I paid $20. I would probably pay a little more for yours.

Can I have it ?
I remember reading about that guy. He was the first Mr. Goodwrench, but was not a mechanic. Can't remember if he worked for the ad agency or for GM, but I think the ad agency. Someone suggested he looked like a mechanic, so they used him for the first shoot.
Brian, are you certain on the date? I thought the goodwrench campaign started a year or two earlier.
Cool sign. As for what it is worth, I would pay $50 for it, if you haven't already given it to Charley.

Mr.Goodwrench metal stand up steel signs are highly sought after, when in mint condition.
Those signs were only available for a few short years.Only dealerships could acquire them, and not all of them did.
I recently sold 4 of them,NOS in the box to another who in turn, sold them each for twice as much as I sold them to him for.
Good for him,as I wanted to move them, and have no problem seeing him make a profit like that.
Wish I could find more for him & others.
Here's one that just sold w/o the box..

For what it's worth I seem to remember reading that the guy in the sign was employed at a dealership, his name was Al Smith (really!) and he drag raced a L-79 '65 Chevelle. Think I saw it on a Chevelle related site, I've got this sign (one of my favorites) so was looking into it at some point. Again though, not positive......

Mine is metal and has movable tabs so you can place other signs over the standard text.
