View Full Version : SPECIAL ORDER COLOR 70 CHEVELLE QUESTIONS

My buddy has a 1970 Chevelle Super Sport Car that was a special order paint color. The color was citrus green, he is not too fond of repainting the car this color when restoring it.. He was wondering if it would hurt the value of the car if he painted it another "more desirable color". Below are the pictures of the trim tag, build sheet and original green paint located in the door jam area.... What are your opinions??????
Sorry for the small pictures.. On the build sheet it says: 2P3 SPCL PAINT and the area that is circled says: USING 927-99846 GREEN A.L. FOR BODY.
Thanks.... Rich

Do you know how RARE Citrus Green is on a 1970 CHevelle. I say leave it Original! I would if it were mine, JMO.
Others may say.... since it`s Special Order paint.....you could choose any 1970 Blend of GM paint.

Citrus is a rare and, more importantly (IMHO), a desirable paint color on a 70 ChevelleSS. There was a fellow who posted an original paint w restored frame LS6 around here maybe 5 to 6 yrs ago. I believe he got a nice premium for the color when he sold it (I made an offer that was not accepted). Rich, for me this is a no-brainer. I would not even consider a color change.

I think it would be different if you could not say with certainty what the original color was. I, along with the others that have posted like the color and would leave it.

927-99846 Green Acrylic Lacquer.
I'm partial to Citrus Green. Is the stripe color called out on the build sheet?

TOTALLY disagree with that logic.
The cool thing about this car is that it has the color code on the data plate, so the original color won't be lost to posterity. While I feel the car should go to a person who will respect its pedigree, at least he knows if he changes the color it won't be a total loss.

IMO i think who ever owns that car and does not choose to put back the Citrus Green will be a big mistake.
That color is Nice. Maybe these photos will change your mind.My vote is putting back the color the car was born with.

I don't believe the color was on the trim tag, it was on the build sheet. The trim tag showed --. To my knowledge, Van Nuys is the only 70 Chevelle plant that put the actual paint code on the trim tag.
does it have anything in box #60 on the build sheet?

I am posted this on behalf of Dave "Giljvich" Gilsmer.......Prior owner of a CG LS6.
I usually do not respond to issues that no longer involve me, but here goes. Not a day goes by that I do not regret selling my citrus green Ls6. I sleep with a picture of that car next to my bed. I took so much crap for that color from people with all sorts of unprovoked opinions about me or the color of my car. I will tell you there is no chevelle more beautiful in color than my old citrus green with white stripes car. Every one had ideas about where the value on that car would be and most were seriously short on the money. I honored the deal I made with the person who bought the car, but during the transaction I had some one interested, should the deal fall, for significantly more money.
Please leave the color of your car citrus green. Please do not give in to the nonsense I hear on a daily basis about green and people who like green. When citrus green is seen in natural daylight and the sun picks up the gold highlights and the color shifts a little with the sun it is absolutely stunning. Citrus green is a color that grows and grows on you. You will get sick of any other color in a few years. Please don not waste something so unique and precious. Should you want to contact me, Dan Vasic (Postsedan) has my number.
Thanks for letting me speak,
Dave Gilsmer

Oshawa Plant had the paint code on the trim tag as well.

Rich,
Can you confirm if your friends CG Chevelle was built in June of 1970. Dave`s former LS6 was as well. Would be interesting to see how close the vins were? Both car were built in Atlanta, we could unravel a little of the paint code mysteries by comparing notes.

Dan - what docs did that CG LS6 have? I don't recall.
The LS-6 had a Pa. loan installment contract dated Sept. 1970 & 3 buildsheets found in drivers door panel, behind backseat & under package shelf originally.
Rich's friends car was assembled the 4th week of June,1970,in Atlanta. The LS-6 was the 5th week in Atlanta.

The CG LS6 is a 6E build, which would be either 6/29/70 or 6/30/70, and has multiple build sheets. The trim tag for the car which started this thread is a 6D.
Dan, thanks for the info on the Oshawa trim tags. I've never seen or even looked at an Oshawa built car since they produced no LS6 equipped Chevelles.

The Bunn LS6 was 06E Atlanta built with tag # -60009 and according to good intel provided by Rick (Mr70) was actually completed the 1st week of July. Wonder how close the CG LS6 and the Bunn car were to each other on the assembly line? Looks like the 06D CG SS at the start of this thread is an -58541.

Here is the paint sheet released in the spring of 1970, Notice how it mentions the 454 LS6 could not get Citrus Green.
Rules back then were made to be broken.

That's mighty close for these two 06E built LS6s (-59769 vs. -60009)! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/shocked.gif Being that close, it is possible the CG LS6 left the assembly line the 1st week of July (as did the Bunn LS6). NICB would confirm.

I generally am not a fan of green on musclecars but i love that color! Pontiac called it Key Lime and it is the only green I'd ever consider for a car of that vintage. Keep it Citris Green!
Seven years ago,this N.C. owner had a Citrus 70 396/350.
Rich,by chance is this your buddys Chevelle today?

----Beautiful cars pictured. I would definetly paint mine Citrus Green if I had one. I remember a Citrus Green Malibu near me in Florida in 1970 and the color didnt look nearly as good. Is it possible that this color in 2-stage is much more alluring than the original lacquer???
----Id also love to see a Carmel Bronze SS. That color looks very cool! Anybody seen one???.....Bill S

I talked with my friend earlier and he corroborated that this is the same car from the 2005 thread that Rick posted... The car is citrus green, stripe delete, non cowl hood, bucket seat, gauge car, 396/350HP, turbo 400...
I think you guys convinced him to do the citrus green after all the overwhelming responses!! I told him the citrus green stripe delete makes it all that more unique!!
Thanks again SYC!!!!

Sam,
Here is your answer from, Dave Gilsmer.
My old car had three build sheets; one from on top of the tank, one from under the back seat and one discovered by our friend Kevin while working for the Hot Rod Haus on the inside of the drivers door panel being an Atlanta car. The car also had the original purchase invoice from the dealer. I sure miss the car.

I think this is pretty neat - had no idea there were some midyear colors available!
But why would they restrict the color by engine?

So was this Citrus Green availible with the LS6? It says not availible with LS6 on those color charts. Just wondering.

It was not but if you knew how to ask the right people back then, it did in fact make it's way onto some LS6 cars.

For Pontiacs, it was an $88.14 option (W51 SOLID SPECIAL PAINT) to get a special order color. I imagine there was a similar charger on the Chevies as well. Your dealer just had to be aware of the availability of the option.
Back then if you wanted a non-available color, from an unknowledgable dealer it was the typical dealer response of: "If I don't know, the answer is no"

WOW! What a killer color on a 70 Chevelle SS! Ihave never seen one until now and never even knew it exist. This was always my favorite color on a 70 Z28.

For any of you guys who used to read Car Craft Magazine in the early 2000s, the "Cheap Street Chevelle" project was a special paint Citrus Green car as well. You could still see some of the factory paint in the cowl area. Until now I had never seen another!
