a guy I know has 2 of these blocks sitting under his work bench (he said both of them are out of LS6 chevelles). they are both good with complete rotating assemblies still in them, nicely put away (oiled). I am clueless on what these are worth (no heads). he could careless about these old blocks actually (I was there to look at some old wheels, and I am going back to get them), I spotted the blocks and asked.
$500 a safe purchase each if they had a VIN to prove its a LS6? $1000 each? if decked, dont buy?

If they are truly 512 blocks they are worth big buck regardless if they are LS6 or not. The VIN only adds value if you can find it's original bed. If you can buy them for $500 and they are salvagable, I would not hesitate.

----Agree with Rick........Bill S
Find out the casting dates & make sure they're 4 bolt main and not 2 bolt main blocks.
Besides crankshafts,do they have rods & pistons?
Both effect whatever his asking price greatly.
Used from 1969-1971,COPO 427 Camaros/Chevelles,454 LS-6/LS-5 Corvettes,454 LS-5/427 Impala & 454 LS-5 Chevelle & Monte Carlo's all used this #512 block in different formats.If you're looking to find the LS-6 Chevelles they came in,I'd copy down the VIN's to confirm,before buying.

---- Your advice is obviously important, but Rick,,,If he can buy them for the $500 figure wouldnt you say that it doesnt matter much if the blocks are 2-bolt or 4-bolt mains? There are lots of LS5 powered cars out there without correct blocks too. And,,,I personally dont see a bit of difference in a 2-bolt converted to 4-bolt engine if its done correctly in all regards.
----The thing I would want would be a signed bill-of-sale that states that if the blocks are cracked or unuseable in any way its "money back time". The seller should have no problem with those terms......Bill S
Getting a bill of sale to say the seller will stand behind their condition would be very important too,if he'll do that.
Yes that's a good price,as condition is always important,as much as what the blocks originally came out of,is more what I meant.
Meaning if he's buying them for himself to modify & install in a donor vehicle, then what they came out of isn't as important as it would be to others.
If he's buying them thinking they're LS-6 Chevelle blocks and to try to reunite them with those exact vehicles down the road, but it turns out they're 1971 LS-5 Impala coded,is more what I was replying to.
Or it could go the other way,and turns out they're casted for two COPO cars, then those prices stated are a no brainer.
He hasn't said if the seller will accept $500-1K,or if he's just a buyer offering that?
4 bolt blocks have obvious provisions above the oil filter mounting base for an external oil cooler,so look into that also.
Overall, too many people have bought so many things in the past w/o doing basic research, only to come crying back to the sellers or websites, calling out the sellers and saying this isn't what you said it was.
I just don't want to see that happen here.

wow, thanks for the advice and education! I think I now know what makes sense to offer, based on what I will see. I just know they will sit under that bench forever unless I ask for them to see daylight.

this guy used to race cars centered around the chicago area. Odds are if there are vins, they are from chicago area cars. but you never know. this guy used to race with hydrazine, so maybe I should check those blocks for cracks....now that i think about it...I guess that stuff was rocket fuel and probably could really stress out an engine.
