There is a "famous" Z/28 JL-8 Clone over here that was built in the mid 80's, it is a very nice looking car and it has evolved a lot of stories around it over the years. Present owner has "added" his flavor to the stories and some people now thinks it is real...

One of the stories around this car was that it had some racing heritage and one was that it had been raced on sea ice.

Ice-racing is a very common thing over here in Scandinavia, infact the worlds most famous test-center for carmanufacturers is located in the very north of Sweden. 5th gen Camaros were tested there before the release. The facility is on a big lake and it covers many miles of track. They even plow up replicas of famous F1-tracks like Silverstone on the ice.

So the other day I was visiting a friend and he had some old Swedish carmagazines from the 70's, I was looking through them and found on one page this Camaro racing on the ice.

As you can see it was driven hard!

From the licenseplate I can tell it really is the same car as the Z/28-clone. The picture is scanned from a Xerox-copy, I wasn't able to borrow the magazine for a proper scan. The image has some telltale signs, like the SS-badge on the front fenders. Through the windows you can also see the rollcage which the car had according to the stories around it.

It was imported to Sweden in 1975 and this article is from 1976, lettering is sponsorship from a dealer in the north. That dealer also sold the 1971 GTO Judge Vert Stick shift (1 of 3) that once was over here.

This is how it looks today:

The present owner claims that it is one of the original Penske cars, hard to beleive when you see the Ice-racing car that looks pretty much as any Camaro. I hardly doubt that Penske ran with Vinyltops :-)

Nice to find old history.

Jan, Penske had a famous race car that they put a vinyl top on because they left it in the acid bath too long, or at least the story goes. Here is a picture of the car...

The Penske cars do not have any vinyl under the rear window in those pics, if that means anything. So the vinyl top on the car doing iceracing in Sweden is different.

Nice pic Jan !
