View Full Version : My son got his first car today, 69 Nova

My son got his 1st car today. It's a 69 Nova which has been off the road & in a barn since 1988. Its nothing "fancy", just a 307 Powerglide car. He has already decided he wants it redone in the original butternut yellow. He's only 10 so we have 6 years to get it done. It pretty much needs everything but for how original the car is I couldn't say no and the $1400 price seemed pretty fair to me. Now the good stuff, pictures.

How cool are those wheels!!!
Is that grill original? were there more than one style for 69?

I'm having flashbacks!!

As far as we know it is original, theres no signs anything has ever been changed or replaced other than the wheels which obviously have been on there a LONG time. Im not sure on the brand, cant tell from the outside.

Awesome Lewis... I think it will turn out great for him and I love the fact he wants to keep the original color. I have some extra parts I can throw your way to help the little guy out.

Great deal - that car is like a sore dick, you cant beat it <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif
Enjoy the quality time you spend with you son rebuilding it. One of my first cars was a Nova as well.

The smile plastered on his face in the 1st picture has been there since we got home. He poked his head out the door a few times to make sure it's still there. I can truly say I haven't ever seen him so excited. He even likes the old 5 slots which I think should stay with the car. This car reminds me so much of my 1st car, my 71 Nova. I did have a better start since mine was a 29,000 mile 1 owner car but this one will be a fun project for us.

Cool, you can't go wrong with a Nova. I like the color, but a stinger hood with a little off color contrast would be pretty cool.

My dad bought me my first car in 1990. A 77 camaro rally sport. Still have it today. Congrats. I'm sure your boy will love it. My son is 2 and my dad and I bought him a Vega with a v8 that we are doing as a Motion tribute. As young as he is,he loves the car.

Cool car - glad you are keeping it BY!
don't sweat the grill, you have a '70+ version (20 slots instead of the 10 for '68-'69), just enjoy working on it together. Those 6 years will go by a lot faster than you might think.....

Besides wanting to keep it Butternut he also wants to add a stinger hood. The wheels are staying too. I have to admit I'm surprised by his taste for the classic day 2 look and not the more modern styles.
I didn't know there was a difference in the years for the grill, we will have to fix that.
We are in Millard, 156 & Harrison area.

I got my first car when I was 14. I bought a 69 Indy Pace Car Camaro with a 1964 327 in it. My dad helped me buy it. We got it home and my mom yelled at him: "YOU KNOW HE's 14 AND HIS BROTHER IS THE ONE THAT JUST TURNED 16!"
It seems that he forgot which kid was which at the time. (being one of 5 kids, I can only imagine the confusion he must have had to deal with).
I have been playing with cars ever since. He did eventually help my brother get a Daytona Yellow 1969 SS396/375 4-speed Camaro which was much cooler than my car.

I know the feeling. I found a '70 Nova "little old lady car" that sat in her garage for many years and bought it for my son's first car. Typical plain 307 auto with low mileage. We spent a lot of time getting rid of the mildew and mouse smells in it, but it was good enough for his first real "date" for his high school prom. He loved that car!

Steve, that's a great story, made me laugh. It seems a little silly to buy a 10 year old a car but I know the time we will spend doing it will be priceless and the memories for both of us will never be forgotten.
That's a great looking Nova, does he still have it? It appears to be a very nice, can't beat clean and original cars.

I almost got Notstock plates for my Nova but came across mint unissued plates from 71 and to get the number 1-Y71 was mind blowing. The 1 is the county which is Douglas where we live and to get 71 in the sequence sealed the deal. Nebraska will reissue the original plates to cars and its a 1 time only registration fee, no annual renewal. I will find another set of mint 1 county plates from 69 to issue to Zachs car. I also like the nostalgia of the old plates.

Never too early to start. My daughter rebuilt the 455HO in my 72 Trans Am when she was 9 and in third grade. My son (who is 12 now) is currently building his second engine. He rebuilt the 350 in his Great Grandmother's 75 Firebird when he was 11. Now he has graduated to the 455HO engine from his Great Grandmother's Grandson's Formula (mine). <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

I've seen those posts, the hood is sold. I figure step 1 will be the quarters. The guy selling those also has a similar ad for Chevelle parts, pretty much the same ad. I'm not sure where he is located though, his prefix isn't Omaha. The quarters are priced each, I was hoping really hoping that was a pair.
