View Full Version : firewall grommet
Need the grommet for the tach wire on 69 Camaro. AIM says the hole should be 17/32, but the original hole on my car just below the fuse junction, is actually 31/64, or clost to half inch. The "Factory Fit" wire harness does not come with a grommet. They suggest running it through the main harness. Would like to put it back original.
Checked with AMK, and could not find the right grommet.
Any help appreciated.

I thought the tach wire was part of the main harness?? Can you show pics of the firewall?
OK, had to crop this from another photo. The large square hole with the radiused corners is for the fuse block. The round hole above the fuseblock hole is for the ducted hood options (.75 inch per the AIM, page A5 of ZL2). The hole below is for the brown tach wire. This is one of the ways you can usually tell if a car came from the factory with a tach. No hole, no tach.
I think I posted on another forum that the AIM states 17/64. My mistake. It is 17/32, or just over 1/2 inch, which is consistent with my car.
My guess is that my original grommet is in a bag or box somewhere. I can put the car together without it, as it isn't hard to install after the fact from inside. The aim says the grommet is part of the harness assy. There were three harness assemblies, one for no console, one with console and stick shift, and one with console and automatic trans.
So, where can I get the grommet???

damn, i thought if the car had a tach originally, it was in the wiring harness and one of the many in fuse block set of wires???

I think you will find that if the vehicle has factory air C60 the brown lead is in the bulkhead connector as it is reused heater controls. Non factory air, it goes through the firewall.
You may be correct Brian. I have never had a 69 with air.
However, the AIM would lead one to believe the hole gets drilled for all models. There are additional instructions for A/C cars, but the AIM says the grommet is part of the harness for all three numbers.
Anyway, I made my own using a 9/16 tapered rubber stopper by drilling a hole, then tapering the end into a cone shape using the bench grinder, a file and some sand paper. Cut a groove in it to make it into a push in grommet. Fits nicely.
I then cut the spade connectors off the brown wires, and made one wire out of it by soldering. Hid the solder connection inside the grommet, and glued it into place so it wouldn't slide out. I am happy with it.

sounds like a good job then. Post some pics? I can't remember what originals I have worked on over the years I think they all were factory air. I'll have to browse my photo lib and see if I have any non ac that use the block.

Cars equipped with tach and gauges ( U17)received a different front wiring harness that incorporated tach, amp and temp wiring no additional holes were needed. I believe rpo U16 had the additional hole under the engine compartment connection block for brown wire.

Thanks Steve. Makes perfect sense. Thanks for clearing up what I may have mis-stated. So, it was only the Tach, without gauges that got the hole drilled, correct?
Here is a pic of the home made grommet after I clipped the ends off the two wires that came in the kit and soldered them together. I then slid the grommet up over the solder joint after placing some adhesive on the wire so it won't move. I don't think it would anyway as the wire is really a tight fit.
Now that I did it this way, I did find a grommet. It is the same one used on the license plate light wire as it goes through the trunk. Even had an extra one.
Still, will probably just leave the one I made, as it looks pretty much the same.
