That is Frank Arones old car and I think it was just repainted. If it was a Member's rides car, Xplantdad can probably find it. I saw it in person at Carlisle a few years ago and it was beautiful.

I would have a hard time painting the 70 Z s good as it looked in the old pictures!

I am using a bottoms up rotisserie out of Tennessee. I think it was the 1500 model. I don't think it will be hard to sell after i am done with it

Steve, I have said it before and I will say it again, it will be a sad day in this house when you sell the Charger. Not only have I known the car since I was a kid, and am still friends with previous owners, I have the connection with all the documentation. My father did the new car delivery prep, my uncle Rich worked in the parts room and ordered the headers and my uncle Jim and Grandfather all worked at that little dealership when your car was ordered new. Growing up in a Mopar family, I heard talk of your car through the years, long before I got to meet you or see the car in person. My dad and I have looked foward to seeing you and the Charger at every Mopar show for the last 20+ years.

John, you and your family are an amazing group, indeed. We will see what happens in May. Otherwise, the car may just be back in my garage again....or yours. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

I ran the numbers and tried to come up with a way to put the Charger in my garage. I could sell my house, but my wife really wasn't happy with the thought of actually living in the Charger.I could start a foundation and you donate the car to me for a write off...but something tells me you would not go for that. I could give you both of my Mustangs so you could try your hand at Ford restorations since you have mastered Mopar and Pontiac already. I guess in the end, I will just have to settle for my collection of articles, models and memories of the Charger.

i thought B-JACKSON put on a heck of a show.whoever sold the ZL-1 should have used BJ. MY OPINION

Charley Lillard
01-21-2013, 04:51 PM
At the time it was decided to put the ZL1 up for sale there was already a ZL1 consigned to Barrett-Jackson and I'm sure they were full. The ZL1 did not show up at Barrett-Jackson. The ZL1 sold at Russo went for about 600k when you add in the fees. A Real car guy bought the ZL1 and paid a fair price for it. Remember ZL1 # 1 sold for 400k just last year. Everyone is easy to say" I would have paid more" but when you call their bluff they usually don't have cash and want to trade some inflated value car.

charley there are old threads about the ZL-1 sold last year. i dont know the history of the one sold on sat. MY point was the money look like it was flowing pretty good at the BJ auction.

Charley Lillard
01-21-2013, 06:25 PM
Yes I agree the money is flowing but I'm not sure having one with its orig body versus what was sold there last year makes any difference there. I think the bulk of the buyers there are just having a great time and buying shiny cars.

I attended both Barrett Jackson and Russo & Steele and I couldn't make sense of some of the prices paid. In general, however, it seemed prices were down significantly. For me, the bad economy was most reflected in my income during 2012, as opposed to what was supposed to be the worst of the recession in 2009. I don't know if other felt the same way, but here are some of my observations, for what they are worth:

Floyd Garrett '62 Bel Air 409 at BJ - went for over $200k (with commission). That's gotta be a record and as far as I could tell, that was not a famous race car like the Strickler/Jenkins car. Beautiful car, big price.

'70 LS6 Chevelle 4 speed convertible at BJ - went for $200k plus commission. Beautiful restoration, with ownership history and Canadian docs proving it. The seller was hoping to have it listed as a Reserve sale for $400k, but was denied as they told him the reserve slots were filled. I guessed it would go for around $330k or so as a real 4 speed. I know the seller was extremely disappointed and I can't blame him.

The Douglas Yenko at R&S - $230k plus commissions. Beautiful car with all the papers. A sad day when a car like that only pulls $230k.

'70 Dick Harrell 454 Camaro at R&S - I used to own this car and sold it to Tony back in 2009. I think it went for $65,000 plus commissions. Sold very late in the evening when a lot of the crowd was gone and they didn't hype it very much, but $65,000 for an original SuperCar like this is crazy. I wish I were registered as I would have bought it back for that.

Just my two cents. A great several days in warm Arizona weather.

I thought the '69 Harrell Camaro at BJ was beautiful. In my own humble opinion, I think it was fairly priced bringing in $230k-ish at BJ. But, as a comparison, if the '69 Harrell brought that much, then I would have thought the Yellow Yenko at R&S should have brought a bit more than it did. My reasoning is that while the '69 was beautiful, had a good documented, history, etc. (as did the Douglas Yenko), the Harrell car was an automatic and the Yenko was a 4-speed. In my own opinion, I think the auto's should be 25% less than a comparable 4 speed. The only thing I didn't like about my '70 Harrell Camaro was the automatic. I just personally won't buy another automatic trans muscle/super car. Nothing other than personal preference here, since I only drive my cars on occasion and when I do, I prefer the nostalgic feel of a 4 speed.

Everyone has their own preference and it doesn't always hold true that 4 speeds bring more. The '70 L78 Nova (black/black) brought over $70k and it was a column shift auto. I think that is big money for an L78 Nova, column shift car. I'd love to buy Charley's '69 L78 project Nova, but that damn column shift keeps me from doing it.

I didn't think the Douglass Yenko met the reserve at $230K? Unless it sold after it was off the block.

Charley Lillard
01-22-2013, 01:16 AM
Douglas Yenko sold. You also have to keep in mind that Barrett sticks to their seller fee. Sometimes when a car is close to reserve auctions like Russo will adjust their seller fee in order to get the deal done. Russo was great to deal with on these cars.

Charley, you were on speed when they were selling the ZL1 engine. Why did that engine sell for so much? Did it belong to a car?

Charley Lillard

Rick Hendrick was the underbidder. Somebody else bought it for over 80K. It was Floyd Garretts and a couple apparently really wanted it.

Wow, that 70 Harrell car was o good buy....that car was low mile orig. paint, wasn't it?
That much difference in value from the 69 4 speed and the 70 car??

How much was the ZL-1 engine sold for? I tried to buy a ZL-1 engine from Floyd years ago..I wonder if that was the same engine?? was it one of the original blocks?

ZL1 # 14 is one of the better ZL1s, the buyer got a really good car. I was fortunate enough to have a ride in it many years ago when it still had mostly original paint and an LS7 in it. That was a ride I will never forget.
