Freshening up my first Z28

Well I just got the engine back from the builder who dyno'd it, and to our surprise the little mouse made well over 400hp and close to 370 ft/lbs of torque. My goal was 400hp so I was very pleased. I plan to drive this car so I incorporated a modern valve train/cam and kept it day 2. In addition I freshed up the trans (syncros and bearings)and detailed the engine compartment. Well its now installed with a little help from my daughter who turns 26 next week (yes she still gets her hands dirty).

I wish she would drive my cars. I let her drive my 69 L78 a few years back but she is hesitant to drive stick. Her boyfriend takes my pace car out from time to time. &quot;Her&quot; car is my black rs/z, but she won't drive the car. I need to get her comfortable driving stick... My one son will take the cars on occasion.

As far as comfortable with a stick... A 396 M20 3.55 or 3.73 even better would be near impossible to stall out, with a centerforce the pedal pressure would be low. Even a Z with a M20 and 4.10s is easy to drive due to the deep first.

1. I can see we need to draw up some adoption papers. I will handle the paperwork for free &quot;DAD&quot;. When can you establish residency in Oklahoma? Let's get this started!!!

2. I taught all three of my kiddos (now 35, 31 and 30) to drive using stick shift cars only. For one thing, it is becoming a lost art. Everyone should know how just in case they ever have to drive one in an emergency. Secondly, they could borrow their mom's automatic for the driving test, and after learning on a stick, the test was a breeze in an auto.

Steve, I have found that sometimes your kids will listen to other people better than they listen to you. I would be happy to teach her how to drive a 4 speed. Using your car of course. Still nothing better than hugger orange with a black vinyl roof, black stripe z!

I didn't realize how much I missed bringing these cars back to life. I appreciate your offer and knowing you, your sons a fine young man, but I've go through the vetting process with her boyfriends and this one is going to stick around a while.

I have that real low mileage white rs/ss L48 auto that I'm going to let her use sparingly. I hope motivates her. Also I think her brother is going to teach her to ride one of his dirt bikes. She's a teacher and &quot;knows everything&quot; <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

I'm just about ready to start the car, but I'm waiting for the header collectors to arrive and then finish the exhaust. I just hope it doesn't snow anytime soon.

I may look for a set of cragars which is what was on the car when I originally purchased it back in the 70's.

I have a question; when I had the engine rebuilt I installed stock 186 heads. The heads the previous owner (Texas) installed were angle plug heads because it overheated and cracked the valve seats. Anyway my question is what is the value of chevy angle head phase 2 heads # 14011034. I believe they were purchase in 1985, and have about 10K miles on them.

is that the updated GM number for the 292's or the 492 turbo heads?

I think I had 492s on my Z prior to my top end build. At the time, a very desirable over the counter go fast item I believe.

I have got the 292's on my 69. In 1980 I did the engine over, and threw the 186's right in the garbage can. Yeah, that was forward thinking! It is easy changing plugs with headers though! You can't hear it right now, but I have the ass kicking machine out.
P.s. the 292's have the blocked off heat risers. Great heads

As you know, I am also fortunate to have a &quot;car freak&quot; in the family, (my son Ian) who shares my passion (insanity?) so it is always neat to see.

Well tonight I take this car out for the first cruise night of the season. I've been delayed quite a few weeks because of a defective RAM clutch. Their technical/customer support is lacking and they had no answers just &quot;try installing the larger throw-out bearing or try an adjustable clutch fork pivot. Anyway I installed another brand (LUK) clutch and it works great.
