Several different vintage drag photo discussions have been started recently with some great photos posted. Thus, I want to see some vintage photos of the haulers or tow rigs that pulled these cars to the track. If another discussion has already been started on this topic in the past, please paste a link or pull the photos into this one. Here are two photos that have already been posted to get things started.

You have the Mongoose, here is the Snake. Not a vintage picture (2 years ago), I talked to Don Prudomme and he told me he found his old tow rig in a yard and restored it. This is his original tow rig and original race car. How far the sport has come:

all the high dollar Chrysler teams with the enclosed rigs and the poor Chevy guys with the open rigs. HMMMMM funny how the guy with the little white vega and the "old style" red open rig carrier had all those big boys numbers!

I went through 2 ramp trucks during my racing years, a 1963 Ford single cab dually with a steel bed of unknown origin (very similiar to one pictured here), and a 1976 Chevy crew-cab dually with a Hodges bed. The popular box trailer was just coming to be the norm, but I always had a company demo and no truck as a tow vehicle so the ramp trucks really made sense for me. I wish I had the second one back as it was real nice and would come in handy today.

Here is the hauler we built for our 81 Pro Stock Camaro from an old tractor we found in a junk yard. We build the box out of aluminum tubing and covered it in prepainted aluminum sheets.

The Brooklyn Heavy car hauler in the very first post(top pic)is now owned by Dan Palchanes. He brought I to my friend's shop a few years back and Heavy came down and took pictures with it and signed off on it. It would be great if my recent efforts to authenticate and buy Heavy's Harrell built 70 Camaro ever pay off.

The car hauler in the second pic is the one owned by Dan Palchanes. It has a lot of differences from the one in the first pic. I am not saying it is or isn't the same or one of Heavy's haulers. I'm just pointing out that the two haulers have differences.
Dan's hualer restored would be awesome. The photo doesn't show it well, but it has a ribbon paint scheme on the bed sides. Much like the Motion Ribbon Camaro. It is very cool.
Thanks,
Marty

I wasn't sure about that. I remember that the one Dan has still has some of the lettering from Heavy on I,so I didn't think it was the second one. I wasn't sure since I do remember that Dan's truck seemed like a regular 1 ton,and the truck in the first pic is longer and has a heavier chassis then Dan's. Either way,it is a cool hauler. I myself would be torn on just how much to restore it.

Pretty sure that Benz is the same rig that gave one guy the idea to build his own overhang hauler using a then new '59 Camino cab.
He was in the US and a road-racer I think, anyone else remember it?

Just found this cool old thread. Here's a shot of my green car with its old ramp truck from back in the 80's. Kym built it in the mid 70's and used it along with Randy for about 10 years. Trying to track it down now and see if I can find it, or something similar to it that I can use.

The one x Baldwin Motion posted of the black 69 on the white Chevy flat bed in the barn covered with dust is just awesome.
Here are a couple of pics of my father's racecar on his ramp truck circa 1968/1969. Probably headed to New England Dragway.

No kidding? I love it. My Dad and his business partner Dennis swapped the big Pontiac that was in for a 426 Hemi early on. My memories are all of the Hilborn fuel injection stacks sticking up out of the hood. It was a great jungle gym! I've spent a lot of time at NED since the 70s. Not as much as I'd like to have of course... My brother is still a Tech Inspector there. He lives about 10 min away in Brentwood.

Great photos. I don't ever remember seeing one of these hauling a car on the road when I was a kid. I would have blown a fuse if I did.

Me too! I used to "blow a fuse" on less than that back in the early-1970s whenever I saw a race car being flat-towed or on a regular trailer usually on their way home from Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ on Sundays.

LOL - thanks for asking.
No - the Slim Jim was barely working when I got the car. I yanked it pretty much immediately and now have a TH400 from a '67 Riv in there.
I don't actually flat tow on the public roadways anymore. I don't trust the other drivers to pay enough attention. For the Widetrackers Dustoff, where those pics were taken, I drove the Grand Prix and trailered the GTO and then hooked them up on the show field for display.

I thought the same thing! Not to be buzzkiller, but to make a hauler out of this truck would take more than just finding or fabricating the bed. The frame would need to be stretched. Driveshaft modified with at least one additional carrier bearing. Brake and fuel lines altered. Fuel tank (s) moved or modified or fabricated. I've had two "factory made" ramptrucks and kick myself in the butt for selling both; especially the second one. But, at the time, I thought I quit (1990) and sold EVERYHTHING related to drag racing. I'm paying in spades to get it back now!!!

Agreed Dave, too short of truck and a lot of work to convert. If you watch eBay, Craigslist and Racing Junk there are a lot of already built ramp trucks selling between 6K to 10K with all the work already done. I'll buy one sooner or later.

Shoot, hinge the flat bed and add a hydraulic cylinder to tilt it. Use removable ramps to load. That way you can leave all the "patina."

I bought this one from a guy local who used it for his dirt track hauler. I bought it for just a cool old truck. I do use it though! I hauled my daughters 68 home. I have also hauled golf carts and bikes on it to shows.
The first few are the first time I saw it in the guy's front yard. Yes this was in his front yard of his trailer. I hauled my 32 Woodie to Myrtle Beach on it. The truck is a rat truck but it runs good. I have been slowly getting things done to it. I added factory tack dash with gauges, tilt steering, 90's bench seat with shoulder harness. Re built the whole brakes system and added power booster. Still drums all around but it stops good. Winch and air tank for road side services.

Picture is from about 1972. John C, Mishawaka Indiana normally ran G/MP, but on this day the 287 cubic inch 57 Nomad was running F Gas. Truck was a factory built 1959 Studebaker three door crew cab that had been repowered. It had a 427 big block Chevy and a two speed rear axle. J.C. purchased the truck from a circle car racer that liked to go places in a hurry. Top speed was well over a hundred, even fully loaded. :eek2:
