Hi every one.
I'm Ian and thought I would stop by and introduce myself and the progress of my restoration of my 70 LS-6 .

If interested I have the photos of the day I got the car, disassembly and documentation of parts and progress thus far.

I would also like to say that there is a wealth of knowledge and respect for other members here that I didn't see at another famous Chevelle site where I got the "yellow bullet" treatment.

Look forward to sharing.

Welcome Ian,
Lots of help here on LS6 cars from people that really know there stuff.
I no longer post that much on Team Chevelle as i find this web site awnsers my question more quickly without the BS i find at the other place.
I did a thread on the rebuild of my LS6 motor last year and the guys here really helped me big time <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Post away and i will be glad to help.

Welcome Ian,

I just recently found sYc, and love it.

sYc is a very helpful, respectful, and exciting website.

There are some expert level 70 Chevelle guys asking for pictures, hit the fifth button from the left and show these guys what we are dealing with here. (advice is usually free but in this case these guys advice is priceless)

Ryan

I posted a few 79 LS6 pics from Floyd Garrett's Muscle car Museum to stave the 70 guys.

That LS6 has the incorrect repro cable holder clips that hold the hood pin cables.
They should be the 1/8 white clips not the brown ones that come in the repro kit.
Other wise correct and beautifull.
<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif sorry for nit picking.

Rick,
You were actually the one who helped me 8 or so years ago on TC site.
You told me how to get the crayon marks off the fire wall with out ruining them <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

I look forward to starting on it again after a 5 year hiatus of building cars for others.

Aw yes, December of 2005. I don't believe the photo of the Fathom Blue car is yours but is built exactly the same as I recall. The firewall photo is of your car however. I would love to see the progress. If you shoot me the photos I can post them for you if you have any troubles.

Here are some great pics of the body by some one that knows how to use a camera better than the bafoon typing this.
His name is Jay Doerfler and owns Auto Body Specialists in Manchester NH, A restoration only shop that specializes in all makes/models.

Jay made me have the car media blasted again and hand sanded every inch top, bottom, inside and out, leaded the quarter panel seams and even repaired past driveshaft shrapnel holes and a hole where an imbecile hacked a hole for a 4 speed with a claw hammer. (I resemble that remark) <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/eek.gif

Any way Jay did a great job and not only is he a great friend, photographer and restoration mechanic......He is watching.... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Extremely nice body for a Leeds car. Nice to see more evidence of the odd rosette red primer used on Leeds cars that I have been chastized over many times as being incorrect on the Leeds cars I restored. Nice to see it did in fact happen. Keep the great photos and progress going.

Thanks Rick,It means a lot coming from a guru as yourself.
As for the red primer just when something is considered the rule an exception shows up.

On another note, Quite a few differences in assembly practices from what ive seen in my KC, Bal, Atl and Osh built cars which are all 70's.

Also did you notice the red sprayed in material where the door hinges meet the cowl? It was hard as a rock and had to be persuaded off, almost like it was used to hold the threaded adj plate in place.

Mark, Thanks for the complement.
This is a labor of love for most of us that do our own work and certainly not for the loot that was consumed while doing it. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/youguysrock.gif

Simply amazing craftsman ship. I do all my own work. To see that body without a spec of paint on it just boggles my mind. I can't imagine how much time went into this step. Was that all done with a scotch brite pad? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/worship.gif

Any pictures of the car when you purchased it, before restoration? Of course the ebay auction listing from the previous thread is long gone. Where did the car come from to be so clean and have such limited rust? Very nice car....

Sorry for the long winded explanation but here goes. This car was purchased new in Park city Kansas and resided in Garden city Kansas until i bought it in 2005.
Good news is Kansas is a title state and all previous owners were listed and all but one contacted by me so the history is fairly clear.

1-Original owner ordered car as a L-78 in dark blue with no options from a small "gas station dealer". He wanted the fastest Chevelle that was offered as he had a 68 L-78 new and then a 69 L-34 new and was not happy with the 69.He must have been thrilled with the 70 but only owned it from the end of January 70 till April 70.

2-Second owner was a self proclaimed street racer and did a little super stock racing with car as well.He told me he genuinely cared for the car as it was "his baby". While in his care he took out the LS-6 and installed a L-88, The LS-6 would remain complete in his garage until 1984. This owner had car from April 70 until June 1974.

3-Third owner had the car a short time as it was re possessed by the bank for non payment ($1170 bucks HA !)This is documented by titles listing lein holder as said bank.

4-Fourth owner ruined the car but subsequently saved it. He managed this feat by butchering the tunnel with what looked like a dull screw driver to install a four speed, painted the car red oxide primer, drip rail moldings and windshield moldings included so it looked like a sleeper. (His words not mine)
The death blow was when he crashed out ruining the fenders, inners, grille and the HD radiator. He told me the car never was driven again and this was summer 1975.

5-Second owner tried to buy it back but car was looking "shabby"and thought better of it.
6-Car was purchased by two others and sat in various garages from 1975 till 2003 when the gentleman I got it from finally got it after a long 28 years of trying to obtain it.

The guy i bought it from (Gary) says that he had tried to buy this car since 1970 as it was the only car to beat him in his 69 L-88 vette "allegedly". He was always a step behind but kept track of it.
Gary bought the original engine from second owner in 1984,The original trans in late 90's and obtained the car finally in 03 when sadly he was diagnosed with lymphoma and died in mid 2006.

The only people that knew what the car was were owners 1,2 and Gary as all others thought it was beat up chevelle.

I will be posting pics of all the original parts that some how made it through all these years, Sorry for long post.

Man that's quite a history. Thanks for taking the time to share the story. Does anyone know if late L78 ordered cars were automatically upgraded to LS6's or would the order just kick back as Not Available?

Mr70
03-07-2013, 01:18 AM
They couldn't automatically upgrade w/o a paying customer agreeing & paying beforehand on the other end,so kicked back to the ordering salesman as not available, and if a paying customer was waiting, was told and asked what he wanted to do next.

Tough question, do you want an LS6 vs the L78 you ordered.......hmmm

I love L78's but an LS6 is a nice alternative. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif

Great pictures Ian. I have found most plants dip the pinion bumper brace in black paint whereas the Leeds cars always seem to be natural steel just like what yours appears to have been. What is that under the bolt head on the right side? Almost looks like remnents of a metal tag.

Z15 SS 454
03-07-2013, 01:42 PM
Thanks, The metal tag is the same thickness and material as a tag you would find on a 4 speed id tag.

The pinion snubber is bare steel as there were no drips on it like front control arms and other chassis pieces that i noticed.

----Your frame looks like so many other un-boxed frames on cars Ive seen and owned that were run hard. I call it "frame-itis". All pushed up in the un-boxed areas due to multiple tire swaps along with absolutely no thought as to where the jack was being placed. Easy enough to fix usually.
----I guess I may have missed something but was this car originally an L78 or an LS6?......Bill S

Wow! It will be hard to top that. Thank you! It will fit nicely with our COPO and various other plates. I think I will hang this one right over my desk..... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/headbang.gif

I thought this "907" air cleaner was wrong for an LS-6 car due to it's position of the crank case breather tube not being 45 degrees?

You are right Bill, a 907 does not have the correct base for a 70. Looks like a real nice project you have there Ian. Like most projects, a few incorrect parts get collected and you learn along the way what's right and what's wrong. My favorite color for a 70 is Fathom Blue. Looks like it's going to be awesome. I look forward to more pics.

Yes you caught me <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/blush.gif,The 907 was for a customers 68 that i got scorched on.
I do however have the original base and lid for this car.
As i was taking pics i was placing things on the table from two different shelves (also note the incorrect engine lift brackets) :)(have 3 -70's)

Great thread with detailed pictures. Thanks for sharing.

One question.....I'm looking at the oil dipstick. The loop/handle is round not flat. It seems that everyone wants the flat one. Is there a difference is years or manufacturers? Can you tell us what, if any, part number is stamped on it?

Here are a some pictures of a coupld of dipsticks that I have. Neither of them have a part number on them.

Kurt,
Both flat handle and round handle sticks were used in 70. The trick is in the specification wording, 69-70 sticks should read USE GM 6041-M-QUALITY MS OIL. I don't think the SE rating came out till later. But original 70's have popped up with round handles and the 6041 spec.

Also I do appreciate all the helpful replys and positive comments so that when it comes time to go back together it will be correct.

I believe this is your original bypass hose vs what appears to be a NOS one within your cache of parts the hose clamps are not the same...venture to guess the hose isn't either.
So many NOS and Reproduction parts are not the same as ASSEMBLY LINE... your pictures will be invaluable to your restoration... GREAT WORK!

James, The top pic I'm pretty positive should actually be the air cleaner breather hose used on 70 open element or dual snorkel air cleaners. The bottom pic is of a repro bypass water pump hose. Originals were smooth with no markings.
