View Full Version : 1969 SS 396/350 Chevelle

Hi guys. I thought I might throw up my latest addition.
Its a real 396/350 SS that I bought out of CT. The car was restored by Nick Lewis out of GA around 2005/6. It comes with the POP, dealer invoice and a buildsheet. It is the original cortez silver, black vinyl top, black bucket interior combo as per the trim tag, and is a M21 and 3.55 posi car. After talking to Nick about the car prior to purchase, he believes it has the original motor in it that has had a larger cam and some other parts and pieces that he likes, installed. It is currently sitting in Jersey ready to be shipped back to Australia.
I have had a few cars in the past but have been looking for a real, documented SS 69 for a little while now and I'm sure I will be very happy with it once I get it back to Australia.
Thanks, Damien.

It must cost a fortune to ship a car to Australia.
Any pics?

Sorry Ryan, took me a few minutes to work out I needed the pics in photobucket! Sorted now.
Yes it can be expensive. I usually ship out of Ca, which is certainly cheaper than NJ. Depending on whether you do it yourself or pay someone it can cost you anywhere from the low 2k's to an all in service from some over here that do it regularly that can run you up to 3.5k. This is plus 10% tax on the cost of the car.

Is there specialized shipping companies in nj that ship to Aus.? I'm from there and dont recall any of our cars going to Aus. I know out here in Cali there are companies like California shipping. Just curious ... Thats one sexy chevelle ... congrats and good luck with her

I dropped off a 69 RS/SS Camaro at the terminal in Long Beach this summer. The warehouse was packed with muscle cars, boats, motorcycles etc, all on their way out of the US, it was huge and it was completely filled. There were overflow cars outside, nice cars at that.

Well after what seems an eternity, I am less than 2 weeks away from receiving my Chevelle!
It sat in Jersey for 9 weeks before leaving. Can't wait to finally get it. (And take those 15" wheels off!)

You`ll be cruising her very soon <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif
My sYc friends, I am in search for a set of original SS Wheels for this Chevelle. This 1969 SS396 is a late built Chevelle....built on 08B.....I need a complete original set of YA dated SS Wheels.
I will be attending the NOCC (in Ohio) on August 2nd and 3rd. Anyone has a set for me, we can meet there.
Thank you,
Dan

should arrive August 5 now, as long as it doesn't sink somewhere inbetween. Don't think I'll be shipping out of NY again. Give me Long Beach any day!

It's been a long haul, but one that has been worthwhile. I am very happy with the quality of the restoration and it is the nicest car that I have imported yet. Like always there are a couple of things I will be doing, and that has already began by swapping out the 15" wheels and tires (which I managed to sell in an hour of advertising, rather be lucky than good as they say!), for my 14" set, the battery is shot which is to be expected, and a couple of other minor things. So a busy few weeks coming with a thorough clean up from the trip and some registration in preparation for our spring and summer. Some better pics to come.
Hey Dan, the interior cleaned up real nice and we are very happy with it and it turns out the 15" wheels had deep caps on them so needless to say I swapped them out onto the 14's. I'd say they are repros, but a nice surprise all the same. Now I have 2 sets!

Thanks Bruce.
Well, spent a couple of hours giving it a good wash inside and out, then out for it's maiden Oz voyage.
Drives real nice, could do with some stiffer shocks in the rear though. Will go in for a rear spring change shortly to lower the rear some, so I will change the shocks at the same time. Next week it will have a roadworthy certificate done, then off for registration and we can hit the road.

Thanks Ryan, all went well. As I said earlier it is really soft in the rear suspension so that will need some attention, and a bit of a tune. The guy I bought it off used to run a bit of an av gas mixture, for what ever reason, so it needs a little timing adjustment and a couple of small things.
Here ya go, Dan. The cat that ate the canary!

Ok, after a bit of suspension investigation, it turns out my car has no hop bars fitted. I have absolutely no experience with these, I understand what they do, but have a couple of questions if anyone can answer;
Is there any effect on ride height?
Perhaps this is why the rear suspension is so soft?
Can I just remove these, replace the bushes and re connect the top trailing arms?
Should I leave them in, lower the rear and stiffen up the suspension? (I must say I would rather lose them and take it back to stock!)
Any info on this would be appreciated.
Thanks.

As far as I know......
They don't affect ride height.
They are a bolt on so they should easliy go away after replacing upper bushings.
I hope they aren't the style that requires holes drilled in the rear end case?
There is my 2 cents.
Ryan
PS: Great pictures.

Damien,
Great pictures.....Thanks.
The bet the lower ears of your rear end are indeed drilled.....I have a set of these on one of my Chevelles.
They do raise the car a bit....If you do want that Chevelle stock height.....I would remove them.
What is your son`s name?

Thanks for the help, guys.
Dan, my son's name is Joel.
If the rear end has been drilled out, I would say I could have a poly bush machined up to return the arms to the stock location?
Postsedan
08-19-2013, 10:35 PM
Damien,
They are drilled at the webbing of the rear end, no machining required. You can easily weld up the holes, no worries Mate <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

They were never intended to help in lateral movement.....it your looking for something a more aggressive suspension. I highly recommend Detroit Speed.

The car goes to the suspension shop tomorrow and they will come out. They will machine a bush if the rear end has been drilled out and back to standard we go. Don't have a hoist or I would do it myself.
Sorry Dan, just read your post again that tells me it is drilled thru the webbing not the top trailing arm mount. Makes it easier.

Just back from the suspension shop today. Car looks great and in proportion now. I'm pleased to say the no hop bars are gone and we ended up replacing all the shocks, the drivers side rear was totally shot which would explain the spongyness in the rear, rear springs to lower the rear about 2" and put in new Moogs upper trailing arm bushes. It now drives the way it should and has that tough, nose slightly in the air, Chevelle stance. I should have in a few weeks, my new redline radials from Diamond Back Classics, thanks Dan, and the look will hopefully be complete.
Got stuck in a little drizzle on the way home so I didn't have a decent photo op as I was too busy trying to get it out of the weather, so will have some better shots to come.

Sorted some issues today, hopefully.
It's going to the exhaust shop this week for a pair of new 18" Magnaflows to replace the 14" Violators which make the car sound tinny and way too loud. Hopefully the Magnaflows will give it back the big block sound and reduce the db level a little. I realise that with a 3" exhaust it will still be loud but as I say, at the moment it's too loud and if nothing is done will eventually attract the wrong kind of attention! This will be a short term fix as hopefully after our summer I will replace the whole set up with a standard style system, which is what it had when it was restored originally. I have also bumped the timing back a little and that seems to have calmed it down a bit as the guy who I bought it off said he used to run an av gas mix for whatever reason, and had a bit of extra timing in it.I am just running premium fuel and will hopefully make it a little better to drive, although it will still need a tune by someone a little smarter than me, to get it just right.

Ryan here is a video posted by the previous owner on you tube. Doesn't really capture how loud the car is. Whilst I'm not adverse to loud cars, I've raced blown alcohol altereds at various stages over the last 15 years or so and run in the 6's and over 200, I'm not really into this for the "street machine"or "street racer" aspect. Prefer the muscle car side of things.
Will try and do something for the after video.

Dan, you are correct although it took probably my worst car related decision to make my best!
Yesterday I was able to do a deal with the guy I sold this '69 to and bought the car back, almost 2 1/2 years on. I have had 4 or 5 cars in the meantime but have come to the conclusion that a '69 Chevelle is the car for me. I was fortunate that the guy I sold it to has become a friend and is a straight up, honest, real car guy. It was not for sale but I made him a fair offer for what is a nice, documented car and since he has 2 other cars in his stable and a one is a 75% finished project, he accepted. I will be picking it up this weekend and cannot wait!

Yesterday was the day for pick up and it was there ready and waiting........

All went well until I got home and I was greeted with this within 20 minutes!
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd361/DSR1035/Flat_zpsaghzlmrd.jpg (http://s1216.photobucket.com/user/DSR1035/media/Flat_zpsaghzlmrd.jpg.html)
So a quick change of wheels and tires then out to take a couple of quick pics.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd361/DSR1035/C1_zpswbnxdarz.jpg (http://s1216.photobucket.com/user/DSR1035/media/C1_zpswbnxdarz.jpg.html)

It drives much better than I remembered due to the ceramic clutch being swapped out and also the addition of a hydraulic roller camshaft replacing the previously too large for the combo hydraulic camshaft. A couple of things in the wind for me are lowering the front some to have it sit right and the removal of the side stripes as this car did not come with stripes from the factory. It also came with what look to be vintage TT D wheels, although I couldn't find any markings on the rear to confirm this, with the Diamond Back redlines I sold with the car. The redlines will be swapped out and put on SS style wheels to go back on the car. It also needs a really good clean and detail inside and out, but this week the concentration is on getting the car registered so we can start to use it again.
Summer is upon us!

Dan, it doesn't look like anything external has changed under the hood. It needs a really good detail and a few minor things corrected that were like it when I bought it. The engine internally was upgraded a little with camshaft, lifters, springs and timing chain.

Gave it a thorough clean today, top to bottom, inside and out. Took most of the day to get it to an acceptable standard. Also fitted the redlines onto the SS wheels. These wheels are actually AO stampings. Would have preferred them to be YA but they will do for now. Fitted a new trunk mat, proper spare wheel and jack components, R59 battery and cross mesh air filter. Still a lot of things to be corrected but I will get there over time. We will do registration tomorrow and hopefully have the front end lowered a little this week and we are good to go.

Well, it's been a miserable winter here and haven't had the Chevelle out for months before today.
We took in a show I have been to many times before in country Victoria at a town called Euroa. It is an almost 190 mile round trip for us and the Chevelle, true to form, ran like a top! A great, sunny spring day out with a lunch stop at a country pub on the way home! Great way to stretch it's legs given we leave for your great country and MCACN in under 4 weeks.

Had a bit of time this week for some overdue maintenance so I finally changed out the 90/10 front shocks for some gas units. Who knows why you would want these shocks on the street, but they're gone now, never to return, to this car at least. Spirals are coming in the future at some point.

Changed out the cowl seal, tried to change out the horn contact but was sent the wrong one. Awesome. Should take delivery of some upper and lower ball joints and front control arm bushes tomorrow so hopefully they will be done by weeks end. Need to also sort out the back up lights as they have decided to stay on permanently. Hard to have a bad day working on your hot rod. Beats working for a living!

I managed to find these two 15x7's locally, dated '87 and never been mounted, reasonably priced, $300 for the pair (just over $200 in your money currently). They need a good clean and polish but should come up ok. Currently looking for a pair of 15x4's for the front which could take some time.

Rich,
The fuel down here is weak to say the least. There was one supplier that you could get 100 octane from out of the pump but that has since gone. I use 98 octane with an octane booster that give me up to another 2.5 points. Works well.

How is your gasoline / petrol down under? Better than the junk we have in the States?
How much is it per liter / gallon?
Damien
11-11-2019, 12:42 AM
The fuel here for the most part is rubbish. Being a bit player in a lot of things on the world stage, I think we get the dregs as far as fuel is considered. I run 98 octane premium but still need to run an octane booster as well. Premium fuel runs anywhere from $1.50- $185 plus a litre, adding in $14- $18 for a bottle of booster for every tank, it's an expensive proposition every time you fill up.
markinnaples
11-11-2019, 01:43 PM
Damien, Are there any local small airports you can check to see if they'll sell you aviation fuel? I found a couple here in my town where they will sell you their 101 octane for about $5/gal which is way better than the VP110 gas at $9/gal at a local engine builder shop. Might be worth your while to check it out. Cheers, Mark
SS427
11-11-2019, 01:53 PM
Laws are likely different in Australia but in the US it is illegal to pump AV gas directly into a car's fuel tank due to the absence of road tax on the AV gas. All this means is you need to fill up several gas cans armed with a good excuse for why you are doing it. I always used the "its for my off road car" and it worked. Also, AV gas does not have all the some additives that automotive fuel has. Not an issue but just stating the facts.
Igosplut
11-11-2019, 02:12 PM
Av gas is mixed to burn at high altitudes, different than VP-etc. Nice thing is it never goes bad.
markinnaples
11-11-2019, 02:31 PM
Thanks for saying that Rick. Yes, there is a drag strip at the local airport and they will sell it to you if you put it in your own cans, which is fine with me. Is there an additive(s) that would be good to add to the Av gas that will help my engine when I run it? I've only used VP 110 up to this point, but when I'm done redoing my engine I was hoping to run the less expensive Av gas. Thanks.
Damien
11-11-2019, 06:41 PM
Mark, we used to go to the local airport in years gone by and fill up our fuel jugs with Av Gas straight out of the bowser for our race car, but as Rick says, a lot has changed since and I don't think there are any of the smaller airports that will do this anymore unfortunately.
Igosplut
11-11-2019, 08:40 PM
Homeland security also affects just where you can go in airports also (in the US) I still get Av gas, but through an employee, not at the airport.

So true. I can remember driving my car onto the tarmac to fill it, then driving on to fill up the gas cans. Neither of those are happening today. You almost have to have someone on the inside to get the fuel unless you are pumping it into an airplane.

They used to let us run up and down on the airstrip at the end of the Cape (when it was foggy as it was/is a sight landing). Tank up the cars and go for it. No more now....

There are two local airports here in Naples that supposedly will fill your cans for you. I have a contact at the one that who said he would do it no problem (in cans of course) and the other (as I said above) has a drag strip right on one of the old unused runways and I've heard they will still fill cans. We're a pretty small area / town so maybe things are a little more casual here.

We cruised to regional show and shine this week, enjoying the Australian summer, which has been hit and miss to say the least.

Well I finally got around to upgrading the ignition, somewhat by neccesity as the MSD distributor module took a dump.
I changed to a Pertronix system and couldn't be happier. Easy to install and fired up right away. It seems that they must buy plug wire by the mile though as most of the pre made wire set I bought are way too long. Need to change the plug ends to a straight boot and will shorten them up in the process.

I've toyed with the idea of their stock look distributors. How does it run when you lay into it?

Haven't had it out yet, only running in the garage but it fired up instantly, which tells me that the MSD system was on it's way out for a bit as it was a struggle to start for a while.
Once I have cleaned up the plug wires and some other wiring it will be out for a test run.
Pleased with the system so far though.

Well after a long search locally, I finally managed to turn up a pair of 15x4.5 SS front runners to go with my rears that I've had for 3 or 4 years!
I had planned to buy a pair when in your fine country over Xmas 2019/20 but it didn't work out.
I realise they are flat spoke nothing specials but beggars can't be choosers!
Would love some input for tires if anyone has some suggestions?

Damien, I would go with the Firestone 670-15 black wall bias ply tires for the front. Coker has them. I have them on some day 2 wheels. I like them. Here is a pic of them. They have the pie crust edges... Very cool look.

Damien, the 6.70x15 might look a little small on a Chevelle. You might want to go with a 7.10x15 if you do go that route. Here’s my Moroso Drag Special tires that are 7.10.....and they don’t rub anywhere.

Yeah, mine are 7.10. They look a lot better than the Pro Tracs that I had on it before, which were just too short.

I should have went straight to the master first, Kurt!
What is your current rear wheel and tyre combo bud?

The same.....I did purchase some aluminum slots.....just to mix it up a little. Now I’m waiting on the right tire combination.

I have to agree...Phil's Copo Chevelle does look killer with that wheel and tire combo on it. I saw it at MCACN a couple years ago and it looked sweet.
So what tires did you end up going with on your Chevelle Damien? Any updates?
Damien

No updates Graeme unfortunately.
Not much has been happening on the car scene here during covid so I have been keeping myself busy with some vmx dirt bike resto stuff in the meantime.

Hi all.
I haven't been around much lately but I'm pleased to say that the world is moving on after the spicy cough debacle and Spring has sprung Down Under so the Chevelle came out of the garage for the first time in a long time, last weekend!
Hopefully those on here that are in Florida can stay safe!

Hi gang.
I hope everyone is well and enjoying your summer!
I've been lurking but not posting much as there hasn't been a lot for me to report on.
Had some fuel delivery dilemmas recently with the fuel pick up looking like it had been mud bashing. I guess it's the result of the rubbish gas we have in Australia and a repro tank that is coming up on 17-18 years of age.
Replaced the sender with a new one I had picked up on one of my visits to your fine country, seemed to be working on the bench but installed it in the tank and it now reads empty with power to it and correct when the ignition is turned off. Anyhoo, I hope everybody enjoys the 4th celebrations.
Cheers.

You are correct, in the US the YZ was yellow but in Australia and Europe they were white.

Wow, that old sending unit looks terrible! If that's the OEM piece, do yourself a favor and send it off to John Wolf & Co. in Willoughby, Ohio...

They have done two for me in recent years and I have been completely satisfied with their work.

Cheers Bill, I'll have a closer look. The funny part is that as crusty as it is, it still works fine which leads me to think that it may be a factory part.

Still chasing my intermittent stalling issue so i have decided to remove all of the basically brand new Pertronix Flame Thrower ignition and replace it with a Delco distributor and a new Blaster 3 coil. The Delco unit has an 1181 Pertronix module fitted. The strange part is I've had everything tested and all came up good but I'm wondering whether, under load, the module was getting hot?
Anyway, wish me luck! Lol.

EDIT: D'oh! Didn't realize how old that last post was and barely read the one above me. A real genius, I am.
