Fantastic news!!! Let's hope the Corvette owners don't get their panties in a bunch when they find out it has the same motor as the ZO6.

Quote:

Chevrolet introduced the restyled 2014 Camaro line at the 2013 New York Auto Show, including the return of the Z/28, the most iconic model in Camaro history.

The 2014 Camaro models feature a revised exterior design that integrates high-performance aerodynamics for more efficient cooling and stability at high speeds. The new Chevy Camaro Z/28 also features a full aerodynamics package that creates downforce at speed, which helps make it the most track-capable offering in Camaro's history.

"As the ultimate track-capable Camaro, this car restores the mission of the original Z/28, and serves as a testament to the expertise of Chevrolet as the best-selling brand of performance cars," said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America. "The build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight, high-revving, dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers for track use; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight. This car could only come from Chevrolet, and could only be called the Z/28."

The first Camaro Z/28 was introduced in 1967, created to compete in the Sports Car Club of America's Trans-Am 2 class. It featured a smaller, lighter, 302-cubic-inch V-8 for improved weight balance, as well as quick-ratio steering and a heavy-duty suspension for track use. In keeping with its road-racing focus, the 1967 Camaro Z/28 was not available with an automatic transmission or air conditioning.

While the new Camaro Z/28 is not intended to compete in a specific race series, it is solely focused on track capability. In initial testing, the Camaro Z/28 is three seconds faster per lap than the Camaro ZL1. That extra speed comes from three areas:

Increased grip: The Z/28 is capable of 1.05 g in cornering acceleration, due to comprehensive chassis revisions
Increased stopping power: the Z/28 features Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes capable of 1.5 g in deceleration, and consistent brake feel, lap after lap

Reduced curb weight: The naturally aspirated Z/28 weighs 300 pounds less than the supercharged Camaro ZL1, with changes ranging from lightweight wheels to thinner rear-window glass.

Good to hear. Styling is an improvement. Looks a bit busy/heavy out back though (color keyed spoiler?). Nice to see them down-size the bow tie up front. Indications that the car will be under 4K lbs (i.e. 300 lbs lighter than the ZL1). Sounds like this car will do its talking with its performance!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

I seen this announced earlier and ignored the story until I heard mention that the LS-7 was being dropped in! It is inherently cool that the day has returned where a fellow can buy a brand new 427 Camaro (that sure has a nice ring to it!) from any dealership in the country. I'm almost glad to NOT be shopping for a new musclcar because I could never make up my mind which one I wanted: ZL-1 Camaro, Z-28 Camaro, Shelby GT500 Mustang, or Boss 302!

Looks really good to me. I've been on the fence about buying a new Camaro for the past few years. This Z/28s got me lifting one leg off the fence rail. If they can truely reduce, say 300 lbs. without checking the A/C delete box, The General will be heading in the right direction for me.

I have always loved Camaros and always will but I still can't understand why Chevrolet has to have their big bowties on the center front grill and the rear panel on the Gen5's RS, SS and now Z/28's. And then you have a tiny RS, SS and now Z/28 emblems on the LH side of the bowtie---everyone on the planet knows that it's a Chevy. Aren't the Gen5's supposed to be modeled after the 1969 Camaros? I think Chevrolet should've stuck to tradition and properly place the emblems where they belong fenders and rear panels too. The Gen5 ZL1 blew me away when it came out but advertised ZL1 emblems on the car? That maybe the one car that you could have bowties on the center grill and rear panel. Anyone out there feel the same...or maybe not. Like to hear your thoughts.

Very exciting news to hear of the return of the Z28. One thing that Chevrolet MUST do for this car is to include Rally Stripes as part of the Z28 package, it won't be a Z28 without them!! With the exception of the 69 pace car, the Z28 Camaros were the only Camaros to come from the factory with Rally Stripes so IMHO it's imperative that Chevy includes them in the Z28 package.

That's gonna tick off a few ZL1 owners, and devalue some ZL1's. I was not fond of the G5 BUT, this is a much more refined looking model on a body style I am not in love with. The front cap upgrade looks nice and aggressive and the new rear taillights are about as good as you can get with the rear end.

I've been told it's three seconds a lap quicker around Waterford than the ZL1. Msrp is going to be interesting, prolly north of 60k(brake package is 10k alone) and worth every penny imo. Too bad it didn't come out on the 13 skin, those Lexus SC400 tails are painful, but seem to look much better with the LS7

Sure looks like it, maybe more of a matte finish. I have never liked the new Camaros until this one. Was not impressed with the ZL1 either. The slightly redesigned front and rear is an improvement. Not crazy about the rear wing but maybe it will grow on me. I own an 08 ZO6 and the LS7 motor is a rocketship for a production engine. Thought I read somewhere that the HP rating for the Z28 is 500, presumably not to ruffle the feathers of the ZO6 owners. Doesn't bother me. It's probably the identical engine as in the Corvette, just the HP was rated at a lower RPM level than the Vette. I like the black wheels too. All around a nice car. I can see now the dealers adding a "market adjustment" add on to the sticker.

Nice effort on weight reduction........one speaker and optional a/c!

It only has one speaker, but makes a whole lot of noise.

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 marks the return of one of the most legendary model names in American muscle car history.

The high performance coupe is powered by a 500 hp 7.0-liter V8 borrowed from the Chevy Corvette Z06, and features a host of bodywork and weight trimming modifications that help turn it into what Chevy says is the best track-performing Camaro ever built.

All 2014 Camaros get new front and rear ends featuring a slimmer grill, smaller headlights, one piece LED tail lights and an air extractor in the hood to improve aerodynamics. The Z/28 adds a splitter on its chin that looks deep enough to harvest wheat with, rocker panel extensions, flared wheel arches, a redesigned rear diffuser and prominent spoiler.

Sound deadening material has been removed from the cabin, along with the trunk carpet and tire inflation kit, while thinner glass is used for the rear window -- all to save precious pounds. Even the Camaro’s signature, but heavy HID headlights have been replaced by more basic units and fog lights are not an option. Air conditioning is.

That one speaker? It’s in the driver's door and only there as required by law to provide warning chimes and alerts. To take advantage of it, Chevy threw in a simple stereo instead of the complex touch-screen MyLink infotainment system available on other Camaros. The rear seats are still there, but have been reengineered with a lighter design.

The result of all this and more is a car that’s 300 pounds lighter than the king of the hill 580 hp supercharged Camaro ZL1, and likely even a few pounds less than the standard Camaro SS.

To further bolster its performance credibility, the Z/28 only comes with a six-speed manual transmission. Fade-free carbon ceramic brakes are standard, and the suspension features stiffer springs and bushings than other Camaros, as well as racing-style spool-valve dampers.

The engine breathes through an exhaust fitted with muffler bypass valves that increase power and turn up the noise. For those planning to keep the gas pedal cranked to 11 often, all Z/28s come with a track-ready cooling system. A mechanical limited slip differential helps get the power down in concert with Chevy’s multi-mode traction management system.

Chevy says the result of all this is a car that’s three seconds a lap faster around its test track than the more powerful ZL1, a testament to both its weight and handling advantages.

Pricing has not been set and it’ll be a while before it is. The Z/28 isn’t expected to hit showrooms until early next year.

With the SS, ZL1, Z/28 and 1LE performance package, the fifth-generation Camaro lineup is chock full of heritage names. But will there be any more? A 21st Century IROC-Z perhaps?

General Motors North America President Mark Reuss says not anytime soon. According to him, the Z/28 is the last iteration of the current Camaro, and we’ll have to wait until the sixth-generation car arrives.

Lucky for fans, rumor has it that could be as soon as 2015.
