Well I need help. Never been into Chevelle's that much but might have found one that I'm putting an offer on.

Nice shape, no rust, but 4 bubble blisters on fenders, '66. Red/blk int. 396/360Hp 4sp and possibly Canadian car.

Car now has a 327 BUT possibly the original 4 sp and 3.73 12 bolt rear. Owner passed away year and a half ago, but owned it for 22 or so years.

So what should I look for to make sure it's a original SS396 car???

Thanks, John

The VIN will start with 138 if it is a true SS.

So that's it? Just look for "138" in the vin?

Car has a SB in it now, so would a BB have a different heater box like my Nova does for the BB? What about fuel likes? Any difference for a BB?

That's it. But not only does the vin need to start with "138", it needs to be attached with the original factory rosette rivets.

No, the heater hoses are in the same spot for SBC/BBC for the Chevelle.

138 should be on the trim tag also.

There were some original Canada '66 Malibu SS cars w/ factory SB's, I don't believe they had 138 Vins but someone else please feel free to chime in.
To be specific these are '66 Malibu SS cars not SS396 cars, best is think of it like a continuation of the SB '65 Malibu SS cars but on the new '66 body style.
Also w/ these SB '66 Malibu SS cars don't assume a bumpy hood automatically came w/ them especially earlier build units, maybe later production did but regardless of build date confirmation of original hood is necessary or you can't be sure.
Canadian Beaumonts are a different subject completely although '66 Beaumont SD's were built w/ both SB's and BB's too also the same thing applies w/ the hoods, no bumpy hood as original equipment unless confirmed.
Yes this means some '66 Beaumont SD cars w/ factory BB were indeed shipped and delivered new w/ flat hoods whether L35 or L34, L78's weren't available w/ Beaumonts.
