Wow.....interesting ad. I think he needs to do a little more research on these cars. A little overpriced as well. Neat car none the less.

L78 Impala with a 4 speed buckets and console over priced? Looks like a tough one to find.

Tough to find but can't pull more than $45k back out of it.....body looks to be in pretty rough shape judging by front fender/pass door

- The L72 was not rated at 435 hp
- The L72 was not the same motor as the 427/435 in the Vette
- The L72 didn't require COPO channels to be ordered
- I believe 546 L72 big cars were built per Chevrolet records
- Chevrolet usually built more sticks than automatics with their top motors
- I'd be willing to bet most of the L72s were ordered for SS 427 cars over any other big car

It's an L72 which is better yet but still over priced in my opinion. I have owned MANY of these cars so I am saying that from experience not just opinion. They just do not bring the money even when totally restored which is a real shame. As I have said in other discussions, I know of a certain L72, automatic SS427 convertible that is rough but 99% there and he was asking $15k 10 years ago and he STILL owns it so I must not be the only one that thinks that.

Sorry L72. I didn't know they never brought any real money. They are really cool cars.

When you get right down to it they are worth whatever someone will pay for them. They deserve more credit than they get for sure.

Why the orange paint in the lifter area? If it has 54k original miles?

Confused seller but LD suffix is correct for a '69 B-Body L72 stick car.
Too bad it wasn't a Biscayne!

The guy has tried several times to sell that on the Impala SS427 website, without success. Might have been on eBay, too, but I'm not positive about that. I believe another factor is that he doesn't have a title for it.....some crazy story about that IIRC.

He's still trying HARD.....spoke with him, for an hour and a half ...... Couldn't get him off the phone. Nice guy though. Really believes his car is "COPO-like" rare. I think it could be beautiful, and cool, but a pit.... Gonna go take a look anyway, only a 45 min ride.

I got an hour and a half worth of "facts". We'll see. If price doesn't come down around half, guess we'll have another COPO clone....that's his plan.

Painting the lifter galley woul allow the oil to drain back to the pan faster on a smooth surface. Not sure if it worked or not, but all us east coast guys did that back in the 70's. I believe the question was why would that be done to an orig 54k car? Probably has been rebuilt at least once.

If he's to be believed, along with the previous owner, it's never been touched, except for the carb being stolen. Not that I'm in this for investment purposes, but I don't see ever recouping the resto cost.

We used Rustoleum Red(some high end guys used GE Glyptal)...in the lifter valleys, top of cylinder heads, timing chain area, etc...I remember spending a weekend cleaning the casting flash off the heads and lifter valley, washing and prepping the block and then painting everything. Like Bill said...not sure it made a difference but it looked cool...I guess we figured it couldn't hurt.

Folks, went back looking at this car. Do those ports appear correct for the l72? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2013/05/full-13224-4798-image.jpg

Diego,
Other than induction (3 X 2 vs. 4 Barrel Holley)all the internal parts are the same for a L-71 & a L-72 Big Block I thought.

Rick,
My thoughts exactly. I own a 1966 Impala SS-396 coupe with factory A/C that's loaded with buckets, console, tinted glass, 2 spoke wheel and factory trunk release. It takes twice as much money & time to do a car like this correctly and when you're done, you get half as much money as a Camaro or Chevelle. lucky for me I have a ton of NOS parts to restore it.

Ok, but do the ports appear correct to you? They appear oval and I thought l72 were rectangle/square? But I'm certainly no expert.

Yeah, but it's still an incorrect claim. He'd have a whole lot more credibility if he said it was the same engine as the L72 Vette from 1966 and the COPO Camaro frmo 1969. :twocents:
I actually owned a L72 66 vette back in the day. From what I have learned present day the engines were the same except for casting # head casting # and a few other not important #'s. I always thought the 427-435 was the L88, and as such would not even be close to the L-72......?

The L-72 engine in a any Chevrolet 1966 to 1969 was the same: internal compression, head configuration (rectangle port / combustion chamber rating) as any year L-71 Corvette engine. The only thing that changed from 1966 to 1969 was casting numbers of the block & cylinder heads, drilled holes ect. for sending units & accessories.
In 1966 & most early 1967 engines, the camshaft had the "Groove" in the back for oiling reasons and they will not interchange with the later non-grooved camshaft. The specs. of the camshaft I believe are identical. That's what I remember.

It's back.............. ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevrolet-Impala-SS-1969-SS-Impala-L72-427-425-4-spd-/251322251962?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3a83f93aba )
FWIW when I was negotiating with him on this car I got him down to $11k, which was still over my limit on that car. So, I'm betting his reserve is somewhere around $12k. PM me if you are interested in more detailed pictures of the car. Crawled all over it (and under it) and have an entire library of just how rusted out the underside is.......

His response to my $10k offer (In July, before his Ebay auction(s)): "my car is one of the rarest versions being an SS L-72 4 spd., I believe it is the very first L-72 ever built because there is no knowledge to date that anyone has of an L-72 being of any full size Chevrolet body version much less a SS Impala 4 spd that was assembled at any of the full size body production plants around the country that preceeds the date of assembly and production number of my car, so as it stands today and I feel will remain - my car is # 1 of 546 L-72 full size Chevrolet sedans ever built and built as an SS 4 spd. !!! It will easly be one of the most talked about barn finds ever driven thru Mecum"

That was the truth....it really did make 430hp......at 5200rpm's but it made well over 500 at 7000 rpm's.

If he persists in his delusional thoughts about allegedly being the first 69 L72 full size car built (who cares????), and corresponding perceived value, that car won't be driven anywhere anytime soon. Too bad, it would be nice to see the car restored by someone <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif

Bill, my thoughts exactly. Honestly, I truly believe he's destroying the potential of the car with all his ridiculous claims. On the plus side, I may end up getting it for a song! On the negative side, not sure I want to deal with him anymore...........
Bill Pritchard
08-27-2013, 08:24 PM
Also on the plus side, at least he has a legitimate title for the car now! (or so he claims).

08-27-2013, 09:41 PM
Not sure how he got it. Has to be via a garage and an "unclaimed vehicle" filing. However, he hadn't begun the process in late June when I last viewed the car and it usually takes 90+ days....
