what a very nice & very rare car here, i beleave this car ran at the old suffolk raceway in suffolk va. do you have past history on that. thank you <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif

I don't know of it racing at Suffolk. It had big gold lettering on the front fenders. Both originals were used on the car, it would have been cool to keep one of the original lettered up fenders.
I'll post a picture of it leaving the line as "Fine 409".

Bill, code 950, black with white top....
Here's a picture in its race form with the original paint. This shot is from the mid 60's. The original Crager mags go with the car.
The paint code is 950, black with white painted top.

Very cool. blk w/ white top is unusual and sets it apart nicely. Love the vintage shot!

My wife is originally from Patchogue, NY. When I moved to LI in 1981, I remember the Patchogue Chevy dealer on Montauk hwy, was I believe Nessenger.

Based on the VIN on the block, that car was produced at the beginning of August '63 (very late production) at the Tarrytown plant (should have a T in the VIN) and it makes sense based on the 4th week of July body built date on the cowl tag. Nice car. It's hard to find real ones.

Verne, the ID number is as you mentioned; 31847T319211.
Can you believe how they made the T on the pad? They used two "1's", the top of the T is a 1.

Tim,
Prior to the production of your car, Tarrytown either lost or broke the "T". Many original blocks and 4-spds I've seen had no "T" at all with the VIN stamp. They also broke or lost the normal sized "1"s and used larger ones. They figured out a way to "fix" those problems by the time your late car was produced. All of these variations are a blessing for these cars, because there is no one standard that applies to all of them. (as with Corvettes) That makes it harder to counterfeit one correctly. A lot of people might look at that engine pad and think Ray Charles stamped it, but it's REAL.
Tarrytown also had the habit (the worker did anyway) of stamping the trans VIN on the tail housing rather than the side of the main case.

Verne, thank you for the valuable information. I didn't know that, I only knew the stamp was quite messy from the plant.

----Tim,,,This 409 would benefit from a set of correct whitewalls. Its not that I am any kind of a whitewall freak, but a black 63 SS needs the white stripes to look "right"!!! If it was a black two door post ordered for racing or something similar I might be persuaded otherwise, but the owner will get back more than the price of those whitewall tires by far at auction.....Bill S

Bill is right on, a set of 1" wide bias ply whitewalls would really make a big difference and please don't think I'm pick'n but get a correct master cylinder for it. These two items would more than pay for themselves. Really nice and very desirable car. Good luck with the sale, wish my toy box wasn't so full!!

I'm w/ you two too, thin or wide the only whitewalls I like are those spun to the inside.
I do like redlines though and white letters too!
That said, the whitewall advice above is still best for buyer appeal.

The blackwalls make the car stand out. "Everyone" puts whitewalls on them. BUT, the correct WWs would look good too. Perhaps a set US Royal Masters for a 1963 Day 2 cruiser look.

Absolutely love it heater delete too!!!!!
guy on my street had a 63 409 convertible
Dual quad it was blue and that car was fast !!!!!!
( I was about 11 and already a gear head I'd fetch him
Green bottle cokes while he worked on it
And I'd get rides while he power shifted
He beat a lot of newer muscle cars ......helped put the
Rebuilt engine back in ......still love 409s ...
