Heres some stuff and pics on my 68 Biscayne. Its filthy dirty right now. I have had it in and out of storage places, car trailers, my shop, etc and not operable or seen daylight since 1999. Its going to be back on the road shortly, just a few items to put back on and get it running, cleaned up and driving.
The story on this car is it was purchased new at our little dealership in town called Callender Chevrolet. They had a ton of high performance stuff from what I have been told. This car was special ordered by "Big Sam" Monda and delivered in April of 1968. The options were L72 427/425, M22 HD 4 speed, Positraction axle with 4.56 gears, F-41 suspension, and power disc front brakes.
Big Sam ordered this car just to race at the track (and street race too im told) He ran it in AHRA D/S and it was also a AHRA record holder. He ran this car hard from 68 thru 1972. In 1973 he sold the car to a nephew briefly, it changed hands again in a couple months, and my dad ended up getting the car in a trade for a box truck that they used to tow our 34 Plymouth drag car that they sold and were getting out of racing. I got to ride in it on the way home and I was hooked, this was my car! I was 6 years old at the time.
It was mainly used as a nice summer driver for my dad. At the time it really wasn't looked at like a rare car, just wheels. He put a 396 in it, gears changed to 4.10's, just a driver. When purchased the car had a little over 9,000 miles. My dad and Big Sam were good friends, one day he told him to stop by the bowling alley he owned as he had something for him. We went, and Sam handed him all the paperwork he had for the car including window sticker, owners manual and protect o plate. Cool stuff.
Fast forward to the early 80's and the muscle car deal was starting to catch on. We went to our first big car show in 1983, the Super Chevy event at Maple Grove with the car. People were coming up and checking it out, we knew it was a rare car, but how rare we didn't really know. The caliber of cars there made us decide to kind of clean it up a bit and start fixing it up, so on went original parts, chrome parts off and begin restoration. This began my journey into the Musclecar restoration world little did I know.
The first clean up was a matter or pulling the front clip, and detailing, then I think we did it again a year later. By 1986 I got out of high school, we just had the car painted and then we got word my dads plant that he worked at was closing and he was offered a transfer to S.Carolina. We moved there in 1987, and once we got settled we decided that the only way to really do this car up was a frame off restoration. That was done and we started getting noticed by all the magazines. From 1988-1994 I think we were in every Musclecar or Chevy related magazine on the market with the old Biscayne, back then there were a bunch. The car caught the eye of a local collector who on several occasions tried to buy it from us. Although we didn't sell it, we became friends and I started helping him with his stuff a little bit, which ended up turning into a full time job for me by 1989.
Car shows got boring, I decided to go try some of the musclecar shootouts that were happening, did a few of them, had some fun, was getting ready for another and went to our local track to test. I ended up spinning a bearing in the engine and well, it sat apart for years. Busy resto shop started, moved back to Ohio, started a family, got into fast racecars, just went to the back burner for a long time. Sorry to be long winded but that's the story. Heres some pics.
