View Full Version : Look What Fell In The Door - A "FORD" SVO Mustang

Wow. I'm a diehard Chevy guy (and a bit partial to Buicks too). Then this rolled through the garage door:

It's an '86 SVO that is pretty well loaded (no leather though). It has just a wee bit over 9,000 original miles. Originally (factory ordered) and purchased in Trail, BC, the second and last owner of 23 years, never drove it in the rain. In fact, I don't think he drove it much at all. His hands never touched the steering wheel or shifter without driving gloves <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/crazy.gif ....there was a plastic bag over the shifter knob so that guys like me never got our grubby hands on it! I'll get some other pix later, but the exterior is the worst part of the car...L-O-L (original mint-mint-mint paint save for the driver door where there was an scratch fixed...whole door was repainted). Interior, engine compartment and undercarriage is unbelievable. When I climbed underneath armed with a high powered lamp, I almost couldn't believe what my eyes where seeing <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/eek.gif . The last owner was a fanatic. He had the complete undercarriage nut and bolt detailed to the tune of $9,000. Every piece was taken apart, detailed and put back in. Anything that wasn't perfect was replaced with (only) NOS pieces. As some know, I'm a former employee of the NCRS, and even after being jaded by more than a few huge dollar Top Flight cars, this Mustang blows me away. Runs and drives as new.

I bought it on a whim and I'm wrestling with selling it on (what else... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif )....Ebay.

Anyway, it's an absolutely incredible car and I thought I'd share it with you.

Always liked the fact that they had 5-lug wheels and you'd see TONS of 5.0's for every single SVO sighting.

Let me see <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif The guy in British Columbia never drove it in the rain? Well, since it rains every day out there that is why it only has 9,000 miles in 27 years. There are that few non-rainy days.

That's like a guy in Phoenix never driving a car when its sunny out. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

(Nice find, BTW)

I've always liked the SVO's and that one looks just beautiful.

How does it drive?

Nice Wayne! Cool lines. What is the drivetrain?

Hi guys...

It drives just like, well, a turbo charged four cylinder...L-O-L. One of my pals (who frequents this board too) suggested I'd be a wee bit disappointed with the acceleration. Bruce was dead nuts on! Let's just say, the pucker factor ain't exactly huge <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif. Pretty much like driving an eighties BMW 3-series (exhaust note and all)...and I'm pretty sure that's what Ford's target was.

If I keep it (and I probably will), it will become a project car for Drag Racer magazine - even on a whim, that was the original thought stuck in the back of my head when I bought it. There are so many parts available for Fox body Mustangs, I'm sure we can, uhm, improve the go <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question Sam: Turbo four banger with an intercooler, five speed, 7.5-inch rear; Lincoln bits for the suspension and brakes (hence the early use of five lug wheels on a Fox). Intercooler lives directly under the hood scoop. Eighties high tech...L-O-L.

Its the 'rare' year too. The 86's were dual exhaust and the collectable SVO's. 85's were single exhaust, dual tip.. Like to see undercarriage pics <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

A 1992 "50" Vortech-supercharged SAAC MK-1 Factory Ford Mustang sighting this week end was neat too. IT was white with blue strips too.

I owned dozens of these in the late 80's, none of the dealers wanted a used Turbo but a lot of people that "knew" them would pay decent $$$$ for a nice one

the 85 1/2 model was the best version, highest hp - I had two of those, one was a competition prep version (like the 1LE)

fun to drive, handle well, factory Konis (6!!!), 4 wdb, forged front suspension, pricey when new ... the LX & GT 5.0 had the same HP but more torque

I averaged over 100mph on a stretch in KS on the way to a race in Salina and still got over 20 mpg - great cars, looks like you have a nice one

they didn't catch on and Ford pulled the plug (much like the Lincoln LS)

I know how to set them up for autox use ... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

These are cool cats for sure. Helps to have a hood that look great and the 1986 headlamps are the most pleasant of the bunch.

There is a fellow I've seen on another forum who is/has adapted a Volvo DOHC 4 vale head to the Ford 2.3. I real shame they never did any cool Cosworth stuff to the SVO, but I'm sure the old 2.3 can hold its own with the help of some modern tech. My old 1987 Audi sure responds well to 23 psi! Go get 'em!

Thanks guys. You might be a wee bit, uhm surprised at what's happening with it. Hint: It's all pretty much bolt-ons.... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

These four bangers are no joke. 2.3 powered Foxes have been deep in the 8's in the quarter using a raised deck Motorsport block and ARCA head. Not that you can find any of that crap anymore, but since I've seen SVO's run mid-9's with the original block and head still in place, it doesn't matter much. You can go plenty fast enough without anything too exotic.

Whatever you do with it Wayne, it's a good looking car. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
