Best of luck in your search. I was looking for my dads old Z/28 and with a stroke of luck and help of a member on this site I found the car and brought it back home. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Check with the North Carolina DMV. They were most helpful when I was researching the history of my 68Z. I received the complete history of my car when it 'lived' in NC. The only stipulation is that you cannot contact any of the former owners due to the privacy act. Good luck with your quest.

Try your insurance company. They may have some old records that would list the VIN. Good Luck.

It had r/s on the car but from what I was told it was a r/s ss because of the hood 12 bolt rear end and it had disk brakes on the front end the car was a factory 396 car!!!

Here's another idea, it worked for me. I was searching for a specific 69 Nova so I posted an ad on Craigslist with some of the old magazine pictures. I received about half a dozen calls and was even given the contact info on the original builder. I ended up finding the car and it is still as built, straight axle and all. I haven't been able to convince the current owner to sell yet but at least I found it.
I would start posting ads in all surrounding cities and renew the ads every week to move it back to the top of the postings. There has to be someone who knows where it went.

So what you need to do is figure out what you're looking for.
If it's a real 396 car, it must be an SS.
The RS was a trim option, but I for one know a 396 car as an SS, so if someone posted an ad looking for an RS, I would think, "I own an SS, so I know that car is not mine."

That's true but all I know is the car had rally sport on both sides of the car and r/s on the grill. I know my car came with a 396 and a 12 bolt rear end with a multiple leaf springs disk brakes and the ss hood no power steering or power brakes

I DO REMEMBER THE CAR HAD A SMALL ROUND NORTH SOUTH EAST WEST COMPASS RIGHT ABOVE THE HEAT CONTROL MAYBE IT MIGHT STILL BE THERE IF SOMEONE HAS PANTED THE CAR!!! JUST A THOUGHT
