Does anyone have an original '68 GTO with automatic trans, 400/350 hp that has the original air cleaner? I'm trying to determine if the one on my car is correct. It has the two letter code "PP", appears to be original, but can't be certain. I posted the question on the GTO forum, but got no response. I also have the PHS on the car, but that doesn't specify a code for the air cleaner.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The one on your car is the correct unit. Only one air cleaner was used in 68 stick or automatic. Single snorkel. Same air cleaner used on 69 firebird 400 cars.

My former 4sp car was just like Dave's, PP. I believe only the PR label is repop'd.

Yep, Don is absolutely correct. The single snorkel unit that was used on the 68 GTO was used the 68-69 Firebird 400. The 69 GTO used a dual snorkel. The reason they couldn't use a dual snorkel on the Firebirds was due to hood clearance issues with the second snorkel on the passenger. The part number is 6424827 for the 4bbl single snorkel used on the 68 GTO and 68-69 Firebird 400.

And as a side note, they didn't use those red Buick style air cleaner decals. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/crazy.gif

Just to be clear, the picture I posted is from a two owner car that, at the time the picture was taken, the motor had never been out of the car. The original owner added air and power brakes in 1969-1970 due to having MS.

On a side note, it's a factory power 6-way bench seat.

That's a bare bones 68 GTO! Manual brakes, manual steering. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

My early , Oct. 1967 , Ram Air automatic 1968 GTO came off the transport truck with this same air cleaner installed and the Ram Air air cleaner , hood plate and hood scoops in the trunk.

I just talked with my cousin.....he added the decal on the air cleaner and its a 4-way power seat....not a 6-way. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif

Hi everyone, thanks for the responses. Here is the dilema; I've got a chance to buy an air cleaner from a 68 goat that is in better shape than the one on my '68 GTO. Unfortunately the codes/part number aren't the same. My car has 34k original miles and other than a couple fender benders, doesn't appear to have had much abuse or neglect.

The air cleaner on my 68 has the code PR with a part number of 64324827 and specifies an AC 279 element:

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii116/Woj1969/68GTOWinter2012124_zps64f9fd58.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Woj1969/media/68GTOWinter2012124_zps64f9fd58.jpg.html)

The one I have a chance to buy has the code PP with a part number of 64324826 and specs an AC 212CW element:

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii116/Woj1969/1968%20gto/1968Pontiacaircleanersilkscreen_zps128b41bd.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Woj1969/media/1968%20gto/1968Pontiacaircleanersilkscreen_zps128b41bd.jpg.ht ml)

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii116/Woj1969/1968%20gto/1968Pontiacaircleanersilkscreen2_zpsb65992b8.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Woj1969/media/1968%20gto/1968Pontiacaircleanersilkscreen2_zpsb65992b8.jpg.h tml)

I cannot see a physical difference between the two. The Pontiac parts manual that I have at home does not have the 4826 air cleaner listed, but does list the 4827 as applicable to 68 -69 400 - 4bbl f/8, t/8, p/8, gp/8. I did look at my PHS docs and it does specify a high volume (I think that is what it said) air cleaner.

Is there a chance the factory made a mistake? Any inputs would be appreciated. I was thinking I should check the owner's manual to see what element it specifies, but I'm currently out of town.

Here are a few pix of the car. It was originally sold at Myrtle Motors in NY. I did get a copy of the bill of sale. If the original owner is still alive, he is around 92 years old.

Someone will notice this so I'll mention it now, the GTO emblem is on the wrong side of the deck lid, the lid appears original but I'm guessing this got changed out by someone.

Once again, thanks for the input.

Phil Woj.

Woj,

What does Pontiac call that color? It looks great w that vinyl roof. Also, what is "EZ All ", "Air Cleaner" and "Exth Ext." on the vehicle invoice?

Believe it or not that color is called April Gold

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii116/Woj1969/1968%20gto/1968gto6invoice_zpsd558fbf8.jpg

I've seen quite a few sales invoices, and sales writers were notorious for spelling errors, and using a strange form of shorthand, as they typed up the receipt.

I'm guessing that "Exth. Ext." are the chrome exhaust tips (exhaust extensions), "Guages & Clock" is supposed to be "Gauges & Clock", and "Tilted Steering Wheel" is simply tilt wheel. "EZ All" may be tinted glass all around, and "Air Cleaner" may be the HD unit that used a foam filter. Some of these sales invoices were typed up by non-automotive people, so it wouldn't surprise me if "Ret H.D. Lmp" are the hideaway headlights.

The real truth would be the original invoice (from PHS) showing the codes. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Sam,
Chevrolet called it Ash gold, code "G"
same color as that 68 Camaro convt. I had a few years ago.

I just checked the PHS and it shows the air cleaner on box 45 as "Air Cleaner, Dual Stage H.D." I had it wrong calling it a high volume air cleaner. I'll get the element number on it tomorrow. Mike, I think you have it right as the HD air cleaner. This is new to me.

Thanks everyone. Phil Woj

Gents,

Thanks for the help on this issue. I am always amazed by the wide range of info that members here are willing to share. I posted this on the GTO forum only to hear crickets.

Here are a few pictures of the original air cleaner. I was out of town and couldn't get any before today. The air cleaner instructions even say "Heavy Duty Air Cleaner". Never knew that was an option. Thanks Mike!!

Anyway, here are some photos of what is on the car. I presume this to be original to the car.

My plans for the car are to restore it some day. It has a cylinder with low compression that I have diagnosed to either a head gasket, rings or piston. That will be next winter's project.

Thanks again everyone. Happy Independence Day.

Phil Woj.
