I put a Hurst shifter in my bench seat, 69 big block Nova project car. The chrome handle looks like a one size fits all piece. Does anyone know if there is a more correct shaped handle available?

Hurst Shifters 3916848 - Hurst Competition/Plus Shifter

It's the shifter they list for the bench seat Novas. There's nothing wrong with the shifter. I'm wondering if someone makes a stock looking handle, that is like what GM used in 69.

Here's a shot of the shifter.

Here's a shot of a members Nova shifter. This is what I'm looking into.

Bill this is what you need to do.

Find an old shifter handle cut off the bottom and weld on the hurst bottom.

Just did it for Tom Williams a couple months ago.

The second shifter is the one he gave me to use as a template.

Of coarse I had to grind my weld dowm.

Thanks Jason. Great pictures/explanation. I thought maybe someone made the correct handle, like you can get for Chevelles. Ground-Up sells a Muncie handle that fits the Hurst shifter, but the Chevelle handle is straight at the bottom, so it's just a matter of cutting the bottom off, and drilling 2 holes.

I'll start looking for a Muncie Nova handle. I wonder how close the bench seat Chevelle handle is to a Nova handle. They're easy to find. I have the Hurst shifter handle, to use for the bottom. I just need the Muncie handle to graft it to.

youd be better looking for a 67 camaro muncie shifter than a chevelle, the chevelle shifter has a bigger hook and will hit the dash on a power shift, and it looks out of place and huge...i built 5 Novas in a row in the late 90s and experimented a lot..the camaro one worked best

I have done a bunch of the Muncie stick conversions and I just cut it off and drill the holes. I may have an extra Nova Bench Muncie stick as I have a bunch of Camaro Chevelle Nova Muncie shifters.

the 69-70 Nova used the 67-68 Camaro mount plate that you have but the 71-72 Nova used the Chevelle install kit with the 7773 mount plate and it locates the shifter higher on the trans.

Don't know if this will help Bill but try DRCLASSICS. Here is the link:

Bill, take a look at this site. They have a few different handles. I have heated the handles up and bent them before. The chrome turns blue, but I have a Baldor polishing wheel that I can get the bluing off with. It works for me, but someone will probably argue about doing it that way.

Thanks a lot for all the ideas. I have some homework to to. It's not something I have to do right away. It's a simple switch to make, once I have the handle ready to go.

Is there a number on the muncie shifters to tell what they fit? I think I have a couple but will need rechromed and rebuilt....

Micheal, the Nova handles are different than Chevelles. When the Nova shifter handle comes out of the shifter, it turns to the right, to get it farther away from your leg, so just cutting a handle off and drilling new holes, doesn't work. That's why others have talked about grafting the new handle to a Nova handle. Also the Chevelle handles are bigger, and I have to be careful which handle to use, because they can hit the dash.

It works if you cut off the Muncie stick below the offset on the bench seat stick.
There is a bushing welded on that has to be removed also and some grinding has to be done. Welding on the lower piece to the Hurst stick will work also.
The one in the pic here was not cut off in the right place as they cut off the offset part.

On the 67-68 Camaro I just match the Muncie stick to the Hurst 4106 stick.
The 4106 stick is also used on 1968 Nova with console

there are some on here for 67-68 Camaro and 1968 Chevy II (Nova) with console

They also sell splined shims to move it over.I might have some shims left over from when i bought the hurst/muncie kit.
Have you looked at Hurst's website?

Jason, what model car was the Muncie shifter handle out of? I plan on this on my 69 Nova.

Thanks again for the replies gentlemen. I've looked at a bunch of handles. I've been swamped the last couple days getting stuff done on the Nova, and getting the truck, trailer and El Camino ready for the trip to the Ohio Chevelle show. I'll deal with the shifter when I get home. Thanks again for all the replies. Lots to think about......maybe I should have stuck with the powerglide??
