Went to Hot August Nights and ran into a couple of people that had the same problem.......These aftermarket Battery dis-connects went bad......Removed them and the cars started right up......Just thought I would pass the info along......

Hey Ken, I have these on my cars. Can you explain what exactly happened? Very curious (and naturally nervous).

Many thanks,
Dan

Seems that the rotating contact assy lost it's connection in both instances......rotating the thumb wheel didn't do anything and they couldn't get the connection back......They had to remove the units and hook the cable back directly to the Battery to get the cars started......

For the life of me, I don't understand why people feel they need these things <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif I have never owned one in my life and have never ever said "boy I really wish I would'a had one of those battery disconnect things". <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/confused.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/confused.gif Disconnecting your battery by the traditional method is not such a complicated process that I've ever felt compelled to have a short-cut method.

And let's not even mention how 'correct' they look when your hood is open <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif

I always remove the positive cable by hand when the car is going to sit awhile. I just put it back on by hand, give it a slight twist to make sure of good contact. I don't use pliers for the crimp type cables or wrench for ones that have the adjustable nut/bolt. I have never had a problem. I do use a trickle charger when the car is sitting more than a day or two. The gel no maintenance original looking battery I have is 4+ yrs old and going strong. The other batteries I use are delco remy with a battery topper. Looks close to correct and less expensive over the long run. I hate side post batteries, can't believe GM is still using them. Had a lot of problems with side post batteries in 70 Chevelles, and chevy and gm trucks. Anyone have any useful tips for side post batteries?

I always disconnect mine manually. I carry a 5/16 wrench just for that purpose for the side terminals.

Superstitious I guess, after I had a car start on its own years ago. It was a haunted 1970 440+6 Cuda hardtop. Back in my younger years (I was 18 at the time) I used to talk to my cars hoping they would appreciate the attention. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif One night I was locking up the garage getting ready to go into the house. The car keys were in my hand and I said "Goodnight" to the Cuda as I closed the garage door. Half a second after the words were out of my mouth the car started cranking over. Luckily it was not in gear. I ran back in, popped the hood and pulled the battery cable off the battery terminal. She stopped cranking. I said "Thank you. Now go to sleep!" and I locked the garage door. I never, ever left a battery hooked up again, when a car was parked, after that!
