I had a minor issue with the check engine light coming on.........I took the car back to Stefano and Cory at Nickey Chicago........It took Cory 5 minutes to tweak the ECM........after that we went to the &quot;Gourmet&quot; Dining spot in the Chicago area for Lunch........LOL........But......One thing that I still am not 100% with are the brakes......I guess I'm just getting spoiled driving with Power Brakes......It was recommended by Wilwood to go non power........But!!!!!........So......When I got home here is what was waiting for me.......so.....here is how I spent the night with a fully belly of Portillo's.....LOL......Had to remove the inner fender panel to get at the booster mounting nuts and to give me some access to making new brake lines.......that Eastwood flaring tool has paid for itself many times over just in the ease of flaring the lines on this project over those Chinese piece of Crap tools.....Great Job Eastwood!!!......I was also considering using a Hydro boost.....But.......I just don't like the way they look!!!

Ken, out of all the rides you've built since I've been around here, I think this one's the best one yet--not to take anything away from any of the other cars, and not that I might be a <span style="font-style: italic">little bit</span> partial to `66-`67 Chevelles, but this is just a flat-out kick-ass ride. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

41 days till Power Tour............After switching over to Power Brakes......99% of my issues with the car went away.......LOL.....Now after driving it I found an annoying squeak somewhere in the steering column........I'll deal with that later.......I installed Halogen headlights (no more T-3's) and now at night I can really see everything........I took the car over to a friend for the final touch......a wet sanding of the clear and then final buffing...........here are a couple of pic's

After the wet sanding and Buffing........I have the car all detailed out........and ready to go.......Two things left to do is that I now have a very annoying Squeek in the steering column when turning the wheel........need to take it apart and find out whats going on ......and.....I have a Alarm system that I need to install........Here are some recent pic's

The Education continues........LOL........Took the car up to the Wisconsin Dells over the weekend for a trial run before leaving for the Power Tour in a couple of weeks.....A couple of issues popped up........one of the issues was that after putting the vacuum brake system in the car I was having issues with the brake pedal being all over the place ( Low....High...and in between).....and when starting the car for the first time the brake assist was barely there.........I was told that these engines didn't make any vacuum but I thought that if GM ran them this way ........then I could too........LOL........Hydro-Boost is on it's way...........Second Issue was a slight vibration that was in the car.....I thought it was thru the drivetrain but.......I was looking closely at everything today and I noticed that the bolt that holds the brake line &quot;T&quot; fitting on the frame below the master was right against the header pipe and transmitting the vibration thru the frame..........Gonna take the header off and clearance it to eliminate that little annoying issue........anyhow........the car performed perfectly in this 450 mile weekend trip.....the ride and handling are spot on...........and the little extra horsepower is pretty cool also.....LOL......Here's a couple of pictures.......2200RPM @ 80 MPH.........Gotta Love it!!!!

A little update..........Since the Dells trip I was still very un-impressed with the brakes........I had a situation where the Brake pedal would vary where the brake action started.....sometimes it was just off the floor and other times it was all the way at full pedal........keep in mind everything was new and the brakes were bled many times.......I was getting advice all over the place and nothing worked........so......this is just Brakes and not Rocket Science........So.......I get fed up with this stuff as I didn't know what else to do.......I ordered a Hydro-Boost system takes the place of the Vacuum booster and is plumbing into the Power Steering system and uses the pump line pressure as the power source for the power assist...........Well......It shows up and the unit itself ......well......lets just say it wasn't in the best of shape for a Brand new unit..........LOL.....So.....Now I'm going round and round with them to get the new unit I paid for......(this is a Major parts supplier).........After the Dog and Pony show I still am waiting for a new unit........and time is getting short for the Power Tour.........So.......Saturday morning I couldn't sleep and I'm telling myself that this whole situation is getting so complicated I don't even understand what's going on anymore.......So......I decide to go back to basics again and start from the foundation again and pull the front tires off and Bleed the brakes again (for the 127th time)......They bled normal without any obvious air in the system, so I didn't think it would make any difference.......put everything back together and take the car out for a test ride............Bingo.........I guess there is a Brake God and he figured I was tortured enough..........Everything works perfectly..........Damm......That was hard......Hydro-Boost going back...........

I also got my Alarm system installed and changed the Oil and Filter today.........while under the car I noticed that the A/C compressor belt was eating itself up............I ended up talking to Stielow and we determined that the stretch to fit GM belt was not designed to be installed in a system like mine with a turn buckle arrangement for tensioning as they are designed to have a very defined tension..........So......Here we go again....trying to find an aftermarket belt that will fit........LOL.....I can hear it already........Sir......Year, Make, and Model of car please........So........I don't even try Advance Auto parts...........I drive over to NAPA and talk to a girl behind the counter and I explain my problem and what I'm looking for.........she comes back in a minute with a belt......Humm!!!!........I go home and 10 minutes later everything is installed and the car is running with Ice Cold A/C..........LOL.......Go Figure.........Power tour in starts in 11 days..........

The Story continues.......Moral of the story..........one thing touches another and another and so on......LOL..... (But......We are very close).........When initially putting the driveline together........I had an issue where the driveshaft shop installed the rear universal with the grease fitting and bulged area for the fitting towards the rear of the car.......I didn't notice that the raised area of the joint was hitting against the threaded area of the pinion shaft where the nut is..........to go back in the process......I had the car raised up and sitting on jack stands on the frame.........so....I started the engine and added trans fluid .....when I put the car in gear to get the trans fluid pumped thru the trans.....the car scared the hell out of me as it almost shook itself off the stands......took me a while to find that interference issue......Pulled the driveshaft out and took it back and they put new universals in installed the correct way..........so.....Fast forward and as I was driving the car I had a slight rear end howl...........So .......we are leaving in 3 days for the Power Tour and last night I was thinking about how that rear end shook so violently at that time and the rear end howl.........Hummm!!!.......You know when you get that Knot in your stomach???...........Time is getting very short and this little mis-adventure was coming back to &quot;Haunt&quot; me.....So......I called Jimmy at Chassis Service (who did the rear originally) and asked him if he could put my mind at ease and check it out.......He laughed and said &quot; You need it when&quot;???...........Bottom line he fit me in this afternoon.........He just called me and said I was Lucky I didn't take the car the way it was as the bearings had started eating them selves and the Ring and Pinion were worn to a point of him not being comfortable with them...........So........He said he was on his way down to Strange Engineering to get all new parts and he would have it back together tomorrow afternoon.......Sheesh.........One little error by the driveshaft guy is now getting $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.............Cars...........LOL

On another note......I went to a little car show on Sunday and the original owner of the car who restored it was there and read me the &quot;Riot&quot; act for ruining his car...........It was an Interesting conversation to say the least........LOL

Got the car back today with new bearings and Ring and Pinion (Again!!!) in the rear axle assy.......That stupid universal problem ended up Brinelling all the bearings and as I understand it......the pressure from it hitting and binding the pinion gear it actually changed the preload on the crush sleeve which then in turn caused a wear pattern on the gears that Jimmy was uncomfortable with.......so......Everything is new again and the car is now quiet...............$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Jason.......When it happened I took it back and they swapped out the universal with a new one and installed it correctly...........Forgot to mention that we also had to replace the pinion Yoke as the tabs that keep the Universal centered were also damaged.......I know what you mean about the Driveshaft shop.......But ......I also feel it was my fault for not catching it when I installed the unit.......Tough Call!!

Myself and Rich (MrChevy) ran into Ken yesterday in Norwalk, Ohio at the Summit Motor Sports raceway. His car is beautiful it purrs like a kitten at idle yet delivers an enviable amount of horsepower to the rear wheels.

Looks like he is having a fun time on the tour.

Yes it was. I did not see the trim tag on the car to see if that was called for, but it did look good.

So......After driving this Beater all summer......Here are a few observations.......Starting with a #'s matching restored car was one of those should I or shouldn't I deals.........In retrospect, I wouldn't change a thing........The time and aggravation of doing the Body/Paint/Interior thingy was well worth the little extra cost at the start of the project........It might have been a little different story if there was shoddy workmanship involved, but...........that wasn't the case here.....Driving the car has been a blast.......basically it didn't miss a beat all summer (5500 miles).....as far as I'm concerned, It's the perfect blend of &quot;Old&quot; with the drive ability of all the &quot;New&quot; stuff (that's also what the GM guy's on the Power Tour thought and why they did the Feature on the car........ https://theblock.com/news/ken-tibor-s-19...our-feature-car (https://theblock.com/news/ken-tibor-s-1966-chevelles-performance-trumps-value-2014-hot-rod-power-tour-feature-car) The car never gets hot.....even with the A/C blowing ice cubes......Did I mention Torque.......LOL.....Now I know why Charley is always smiling while driving his Camaro..........

After the Power Tour was over........one of the regulars we travel with for the week is Steve Kranick who just started a Hydrographics business [email protected] ...........Between Steve and my son Chris they worked behind the scenes and did a new engine cover to surprise me with as they hated that red cover
.........The finishing touch.......

The Season is just about over here in Wisconsin........Overview of the year since the completion in May......7276 miles of trouble free driving this year......There is still a few &quot;Tweaks&quot; needed to make the car up to the standards ..........The first issue I will be dealing with is the Oil pan / Drivetrain angle issues.........again......on the initial install the Holley 302-2 pan was not available so I used the -1 pan........I had to raise the front of the engine to clear the tie rod ends, which gave me a little more angle than I wanted.......to get the angle more in line I have the rear of the trans shimmed up as high as it would go to help out with the angle issue......In doing this the trans is hitting inside the trans tunnel and giving a slight vibration ........So....even though mechanically the angle is now dialed in.....I am going to change the -1 pan out for the -2 pan so I can lower the engine slightly to alleviate that issue.......

The second issue is the reproduction dash Pad in the car........Repro Dash pads are Junk in my opinion and don't fit worth a crap......I've been looking for a OEM one for months to send to Just Dashes for restoring........I finally found one and sent it off to them for restoring.......they have a twelve week lead time so that makes the timing about perfect.......I also bought a DSE wiper motor assy so when I take the dash out for the pad install I can change around the wiper switch and wiring.........

All in all it's been a real treat to drive this car around the Country this season......The Torque and Power these engines make is just Crazy...........along with the average for the season of 20 MPG are just outstanding .............

12-05-2014, 08:48 PM
So........Winter is here and it's time for the &quot;Tweaking&quot;..........The OEM Dash Pad should be coming back from Just Dashes in a couple of weeks........so after installing it I won't be tortured next year looking at that piece of crap reproduction Pad with the ends flipped up because it's too narrow to fit.......sheesh.....you would think by now the aftermarket guy's would have figured Mold Shrinkage into the picture......Just Say'in......Now to deal with the Driveline angles....... After loading the Tremec driveline app on my phone (you use your smartphone as a level and hit the Engine.....Driveshaft....and rear end housing ....and it compares the results and let's you know if everything is good...or Bad) and seeing Red... I decided to get around to starting the process of changing to the -2 pan.....so....After double checking everything....... it ended up with the Drivetrain Angle at 5 Deg down ....... Driveshaft 2 Deg up....... Pinion -1......The car rode well without any Vibration.....But.....at 70 MPH when I let off the gas I could feel where the universals were fighting themselves.........after calculating how much I would have to drop the front of the engine to get to 3 Deg ......It ended up that I would have needed to drop the engine mounts down 1 5/16.......Even with the -2 pan it would be problematic..........so.......After seeing another persons purchase to deal with this issue with parts available from the Driveshaft Shop .......... I called Frank there and we discussed my concerns.....Gave him all the info and he is building me a 3 1/2&quot; Aluminum driveshaft with the trans end having a CV joint and a conventional universal at the rear end........Should be here in a couple of weeks.........Again.....The car drove perfect, but.....I just knew the I didn't hit the &quot;Sweet Spot&quot; with the angles.........This should be the final fix that will let me feel 100% about the Chevelle..................After thinking about it a little more..........everything was built around the engine sitting where it is and lowering it much would have really opened up a can of worms.....This seems to be the simplest and best way to solve that one little issue that was O.K.......But not up to standards........So.....That also means if anyone is going to do a LS swap and will be needing a Holley 302-2 Pan....Baffle system and Oil Pan Gasket.....I just happen to know where there's an extra one for Sale......LOL

Ken;

Would you have been able to bring the angles in line with a pair of adjustable upper control arms for the rear end?

kwhizz
12-06-2014, 09:01 AM
I had everything adjusted in according to the book with a 4 Deg up at the pinion using the adjustable uppers.....but....at that point the drive train was......Engine 5 Deg down.......Driveshaft was 3 deg up and the Pinion 4Deg up........That gave a 8 Degree angle at the Universal...........3 Degrees Max is where we needed to be.......so by lowering the pinion to -1 it brought those numbers closer to spec..........and if I would have left it alone it probably would have been fine.......But......I couldn't leave it alone.........LOL.....

Just a little refresher on what is going on.........My drivetrain angle wasn't the best in the Chevelle.......I had to raise up the front of the engine to clear the Tie Rod Ends.......It ended up that I had a 5 Degree down engine angle and a 3 Degree up driveshaft angle to the rear end (due to the car being lowered).........this gave a 8 Degree working angle at the Transmission U-Joint..........The ideal angle is 3 degrees.......so......Even though the car rode and drove well, It just wasn't right.....So.....I took the easy way out and talked to Frank at the Driveshaft shop and he built me a CV Joint 3 1/2&quot; Aluminum shaft to eliminate these concerns.......It showed up today and I put it in already..........Now I'm Bored again....That took all of ten minutes.........The Dash Pad is supposed to be finished at Just Dashes some time in February.......Gonna have to drop the Dash down to get it in........But, at least I won't have to look at that piece of Crap repro Pad the original owner put in with it's flipped up ends.........Sheesh.......If you are going to Repro something.....at least go thru the effort to make sure it fits.......How many years have we been talking about this Crap............

The New pad is in and installed..........Here are a couple of pic's of the Molded Repro Pad......they are pretty rigid as it is molded and the final shape is such than when installed the ends won't stay in place and get squeezed out of position........I'll take some pics later of the new pad installed.......

As you can see the painted Dash is not exactly the right color.......And I was reprimanded by the person that restored this car for ruining a perfectly restored car...........I guess it all depends what the meaning of &quot;Perfect&quot; is......LOL.........I may get around to repainting it the correct color someday...........And then again......LOL.....Too much fun driving it.......

Flash back to Clovis, NM in the 60s -- there were no mandatory seat belt laws back then. At that time I had a 63' Vette drop-top and if there were three riders, one sitting on the console, the police would stop me and point out that was illegal. Now the crazy thing was if one of the ladies were driving and I had another lady sitting on my lap -- that was OK ... Go figure. TAZ

A little update on the Chevelle........Since completion in May of 2014, we have driven it on two Power Tours (Long Haul).....Did the Goodguys Hall of Fame Road Tour this year, and put on 14,240 miles in total ...........Along the way, after getting the brake issue corrected, the only other issues were a flat tire,....... a broken tail pipe hanger,......and a slight problem with the plug on the Throttle Position Sensor caused by condensation while cleaning the engine at a quarter car wash (since sealed up and corrected)..........LOL.......These LS engines are the best thing since sliced bread !!!..........But....with all Good things there is an end.........Had to pull the car into the garage and do some Heavy Maintenance to it........Changed the Oil and Filter.........Sheesh !!!!.........And .....after driving the Chevelle for a year and a half.......a new standard for &quot;Drivable&quot; torque has been established.........so.......The Impala will be upgraded and the &quot;New&quot; project will be starting shortly after the Impala is finished...........Stay Tuned.........I found the purse........LOL........

A little update........We did the Goodguys Road tour this year......Started in Denver and finished in Bowling Green Ky.......Just after leaving the venue on the start of the tour, we didn't get 10 miles and I got a flat tire on the Highway......Passenger rear.......the tire was non fixable, but Luckily Goolsby Customs had a trailer along just for these situations.......So...we get it loaded up and we drive to a Costco (this was on Sunday so we didn't have too many options)........Costco had the Michelien tire in the same size but not the same model.......Put it on and started driving........Drove 180 miles to the hotel for the night and caught up with everyone........but, as I was getting of the highway and made a turn into the motel.........the rear end was &quot;chattering&quot; like crazy.........Humm!!!.....I figured that there might be a slight difference in tire size as the other tire had a couple burnouts and 12,000 miles on it......and that was causing some issues with the Posi unit........so...I started calling around trying to find another tire and still keep with the group........No Luck.......It ended up that some days we drove 300-500 miles ....so , there wasn't a lot of time to deal with this issue......I was able to buy some more posi additive and add it to the rear to add a little more lubricity to the clutches.......That worked a little better as most of the &quot;Chatter&quot; was now gone.......when we finally got home (2000 miles)I measured the circumference of the tires......the result was that after figuring it out ........every mile traveled the old tire rotated 7 times more than the new tire.....and after draining out the old fluid which probably got very hot with the clutches fighting each other.......I could see it was all discolored.....so I put all new tires on the car , but........Now I have a rear end howl.......Time to get everything replaced &quot;Again&quot;....Just a word of caution for others..........

So......One of the maintenance issues with the 2014 and older LSA engines is the Isolator coupler between the drive pulley and the rotors.......originally it was designed with a spring mechanism to cushion the force put into the rotors.......well...in theory it worked perfectly........the downside is that the spring wears into the shaft and makes a Rattling noise that's sounds like marbles being ground up inside the unit........GM changed to a composite solid coupler that does the job and it's Quiet.....

So.........I decided to work on the Chevelle today and replace the coupler which requires the snout removal......Everything went smooth till it was time to break the snout loose.....Didn't want to come off, so....rather than force it , I decided to remove the whole assembly from the engine to do it correctly.........more work, but I can sleep at night now..............Got it all back together and all the marbles are gone.....LOL

Had an issue pop up with the Chevelle and thought I would pass this along.......LOL.....It never ends.........On last years Good-Guys Road tour every so often when starting the car ..........there would be no response when the key was turned to the start position......hit it 4 or 5 times and it would start and run fine, other times it would crank over without starting, then after a couple of minutes it would start..........Hummmm!!!........Now, I have an Alarm system in the car that is set to disable the starter circuit with relays when the Alarm is on...........Hummmm!!!!.........So......over the Winter the car sat in the garage with a Trickle Charger on it, and recently I started driving it again........started and ran perfect went out for a drive and after about 45 minutes I was just pulling into the driveway and the car shut off..........Hummmm!!!!.....When trying to start it, again ....the same symptoms.........Pushed it in the garage and put the Battery charger on it and after charging, it would start and run perfect........Hummm!!!.......When driving it, the Voltmeter was showing charge, but not a high charge......(13 volts).....I know the ECM is set to not function in a low voltage situation........maybe that's why it would spin over and not start........Hummm!!!.....But.....I didn't understand why the Voltmeter was showing charge and yet the Battery would go dead....The car should still run even without the Battery.........Something Goofy going on here !!!!............I go and buy a new Battery and put it in...........Go out for a drive......Voltmeter is around 13 Volts and after 45 minutes of driving the car shuts off...........Open the Hood and I smell something ..........Hummm!!!!........Car would crank over but not start.......I sat there for a while,(had no choice as I was about a mile from the house)........After 10 minutes the car started and I made it to a local repair shop..........New Battery......Voltmeter showed charging.......and it quits!!!............Darn this car stuff is Hard !!!!!!!..........Told the guys at the repair shop not to call until they had it fixed........I explained the Starter inhibit built into the alarm system and told them if they thought that was an issue to remove the system..............So.....I get a ride home and 10 minutes later they call and said the car was fixed ................Typical me.....Making things a lot more complicated and involved than need be...........Alternator feed wire nut to the Battery loosened up.........the smell I smelled was the melting of the plastic conduit around the wire and nut where the resistance from the loose connection made a lot of heat.......Duhhhhh!!!.........The loose connection was enough to feed the Voltmeter , but not enough to send the Amps to the Battery for recharging........Hence the Battery going dead ...........

What happens to all the little ground up pieces of metal from that internal snout coupling getting chewed up? Does it stay in that snout area or circulate somewhere more damaging? I imagine that after enough of it is created it just becomes a more aggressive grinding media that further escalates the erosion? How many miles did it take to get to that degree of damage?

This took about 14 K for that to happen.......Stayed right there in the case..........Eventually if not repaired with the new coupler it will take the bearings out........

Just when you think everything is going smoothly..........I was talking to Donnie at Frame-Up today about CV Joint drive shafts......He was talking about the inherent problem of the boots on the CV joint splitting allowing the grease to get out, and Dirt to get in.........When I get home I put the car on the lift and check it out.........Boot split and full of dirt.....Darn.......Pulled it out and sending it back to the Driveshaft Shop tomorrow to get it repaired......2-3 weeks till it gets back..........always something........

Kind of hard to see........But it's split......Grease gone........Dirt in.....

wonder if you could use Royal Purple coupling grease as it will not separate like normal grease (EP 2 ) does at high centrifugal speed? just wondering

Update....... Didn't drive the car much this year, been driving the Impala all over..... Took the Chevelle out last week for a local show..... the car ran perfect as usual... On the way home after getting off the highway I noticed the engine was running rough...... Humm!!!!..... I was 10 minutes from home so when I got the car in the garage (no check engine light) I plugged the scanner in and no codes....... Hummm!!!!!......Used the infared heat gun and shot all the Header pipes...... #3 cyl was showing no heat....... Humm !!!!....... Put a spare coil on and started it up .......Same thing......Pulled the spark plug and it looked O.K........ Checked for spark and everything good......Hummm!!!!!......Got Air....Got Spark..... Fuel????...put a Noid light on the plug on injector #3 and everything good....... Hummm !!!!...... The only thing that made any sense was that the injector went bad (36,000 miles)....... Ordered a new set and put them in and the car run's perfect again......... You never know...... LOL
