My brother bought a 73 Cougar from the next door neighbor in 1977 and it had holes at the top of the fenders you could put your hands through.eastern Ohio

Sad but as mentioned above at least it can bring closure to the families.
Amazing it's two separate cases a decade apart, hopefully no foul play involved but you'd expect the authorities will check into any cold but like cases also sonar scope similar locations in the area.
Can't help but notice the grille still looks Ok, probably soon broken by tow-joes or someone trying to get under the hood.

Just watched the video of the scene..appears the main road has a "T" intersection and if you go straight it has a hill crest then right down into a boat ramp launch-that is where the cars were found..bet both drivers were unfamiliar with the layout and just drove straight into the lake thinking they were on the main road.

After seeing the layout I don't think there was foul play involved...just dark of night, poor road planning, minimalno lights or signs, going a little too fast, not paying attention and maybe just a little booze...all leading to a tragic end.

The smashed back end of the camaro had me 1st thinking of foul play and possibly being rammed into the lake.
But now see it looks like rust damage or when pulled out.

For years, they have pulled stolen cars out of the bayou by my family's business. When the droughts hit in the summer, you start to see the roof tops. Being unibody and rusted to bits, the Camaro may have broken apart when they tried to pull it out from the rear. Just my guess after watching cars get pulled out for years.

There was a vehicle found in one our local lakes in the last couple of years that had a body in it. They had been missing for years, and had just crashed into the lake late at night.
Pretty sad for the families, not knowing, all those years....

We have old strip mining high walls(average 80-120 ft high) in my area with ponds 20-30 feet deep at the base..before reclamation was made to happen. Out in very rural areas..hunters and fisherman are always finding stolen cars at the bottom of the ponds striped of their parts.
Every so often atv rider not familiar with the area go over the walls and end up on the morgue table.

We had a woman who went missing and a couple years later they found her car at the bottom of a pond on a local college campus. It was hard to believe it was there the whole time. An old 300ZX that had a low roof line that sank to the bottom of the pond.

Over the last couple years we've had two separate cases of missing women later found in their submerged cars, both were accidents and no foul play that I'm aware of.
I know the one spot well as it's a favorite drive/winding road along the river's edge, sadly others have lost their lives there too but were more quickly found or had others w/ them who survived.
Prayers and condolences to the families and friends of those lost.

Strange... I use to go visit family in Leedy,OK and went to Foss Lake while I was there. If I remember correctly its one of the largest man made lake/reservoirs in the country. I don't think the lake is very old. Those cars probably went into Foss Lake when it was almost a "new lake".

Here is the pic I was refering to from CNN. It shows what looks like the little square fan guard that is bolted to the rad support in place of a fan shroud on 6-cyl cars. But it could be a trick of the eye.

One time CUB pitcher Milt Pappas had a similar experience back here in 1987 in Wheaton Il.
His wife dispappeared in 1982 and no one knew what happened to her.Vanished off the face of the earth.
5 years later,a retention pond right next to the Fire Dept. & only 3 blocks from his home, revealed the top of a cars roof during a drainage.
Sadly, they found she took a wrong turn one night and drove right into it.

This summer my door would not open at the gas station-heard the latch break..uuhh ooh..had to climb up out of the seat, cross the console and work myself out of the passenger side..man it was hard and I work out every day and in good shape and fit....could see why these people drown with water rushing in..+ panic setting in, dark..

So....Milts new (young!!!) girlfriend moves into his house less than 8 months after his wife went missing in 1982, moves the missing wifes stuff out, Milt has no idea what happened to his wife until 1987, car is found with the stickshift in park and ignition off..which the coroner and sheriff found strange

If my wife disappeared legitimately I would not be picking up a new women 8 months later and having her move in and moving my wife's stuff out..my wife is truly my best friend..could not so casually forget about her after 8 short months it would take me a long time to forget about her especially if she vanished w/o a trace...I would still be a wreck and trying to find out what happened.

Call me skeptical on this one..

It's interesting that the car bodies rotted so badly in the lake water. I am no marine biologist, but it must be the warm shallow water and the silt/micro organisms that ate away at the metal? The reason I point this out is that here in Seattle, we have a huge lake, Lake Washington, which is over 700-800 feet deep or more in parts. I remember several years ago a plane from WWII was located in the bottom of the lake. There was a naval base on the lake back then, and of course, several airfields in the area. Anyway, they raised this plane from very deep down near teh bottom and after cleaning away some of the silt, the plane was extremely well preserved without the metal rot like we see on this Camaro. I suppose at those extreme depths and with colder bottom water, there are not the same types of organisms to eat away at the metal?

I'm glad these families have some closure as to what happened to their loved ones.

Primarily has to do with oxygen content..The great lakes has low oxygen at deep depths and ships that sunk 80-100 years ago look fresh.

Would not that plane most likely been made out of aluminum and not steel?

Not sure, just asking.

Agree, has to do with temp/oxygen. Look up the multi-millionaire pulling virgin American timber off the bottom of Lake Huron....the logs are perfect after a couple hundred years. He's pulling 20-50k each log......

http://www.nwrain.com/~newtsuit/recoveries/lkwash/lkwash.htm

we also have a couple floating bridges across the lake, people somehow get over the rail on it and go missing, usually found a few days later, years back a young lady went missing, they found her car down there looking for someone else years after she went missing, its about 200' where the 520 bridge is.

once met a barge guy years ago, he went around the lake and recovered all the ski boats that sank durring the summer, he would raise them and get them running and sell them.
