The very early Lakewoods were shaped differently than current ones..even differently than ones made in the mid to late 70's on up.
I see them on Ebay or the swaps at times...very distinctive flange shape.

The Lakewood scattershield that I am looking for was originally installed on my 68 big block camaro on January 1969. I have pictures of what the scattershield looked like but not sure on the part number. Unfortunately my uploads are not visible but will send them via email.
Thxs again,

Are you sure someone didn't make that inspection plate? Inspection plate mods were very common on those.

Jason - did you find a part number on the one shown above?
68Dana - Also, if you are using the scatter shield for its intended purpose (containing a disintegrating clutch), be sure to install the matching block protection plate seen in the background below (goes between scattershield and block)....

No, I didn't see a part number but also was not looking for one since I did not know they were stamped. Yes, a block plate should definitely be used.

That is definitely how they came with the three straps retaining the inspection cover. I recently looked at a drag car find '62 Corvette with the exact same scattershield and have seen a few others over the years.
I called Ansen a few years back to ask about old stock they might have on their steel parts- like traction bars and such. I posted some pics of the 3 pairs of traction bars they had squired away- which I bought. They didn't have anything else, but I did speak to a fellow who was involved with the steel stuff back then. He told me they were one of the pioneers in hydro-formed bell housings. Claimed it was done in Texas, I think. He also said the tooling was still down there as of 2006 or so. Anyways, he told me the early Lakewood hydro-formed steel scatter shields were done by Ansen. I am kinda cloudy on the details, but I think he was saying the same part was offered by them both.
Anyways, I'm throwing it out there to compare the two in your searches. Probably the shape changed for Lakewood once they sourced their own tooling for a hydro-formed unit.

Paul- What you are saying makes perfect sense to me. I am in the process of restoring my car and fortunately have the original owner to assist me in the restoration. He told me that when he purchased the car in 1969 from the dealership it came with a Lakewood/ansen scattershield. At the time I thought he was not sure of the make. Based on your commentary it sounds like he was correct in saying it was a Lakewood/ansen scattershield. I am not sure of the date(s) of the units posted, however since it was installed on my car in 69 they might be mid to late 60's vintage. I confirmed with the original owner that the scattershields that were posted (with the removable inspection plate) are the same as what was installed on my car.
Thanks for the information.....

With the early Lakewoods you could have purchased a block plate that only extended a little past the bottom of the pan rail. It wasn't a full circle like the one pictured above that bolted to the can at the bottom. I always hated how NHRA changed the rules and wanted me buy to a new scattershield that didn't have the bottom opening. That was about the same time I switched to a glide, and those rules were just one more reason that I did. As I recall the first Lakewood part number with the bottom hole was 15000, and it still had holes in the bellhousing where you could bolt brackets for 55-56-57 type mounts.

Here is a short discussion on early scatter shields that may be of interest;
http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=7891.0
Note how all the units have the same shape and only the bolt pattern of the rear of the specific block. The multiple bolt pattern thats designed to fit several applications seems to have been less vintage of an idea than some think.
The late 60-early 70's version of the Lakewood hydro-formed scater shields were made to fit a specific flywheel diameter and application.
The #1503 was for the "Corvette & Chevy II and All Chevy Pass. including Camaro.1964-69 (Large flywheel) The seperate block plate for this application was #1570.
The #1504 fit the same group of cars but with the "Small" flywheel. The "Block plate for this unit was #1571.
#1505 is listed as for the 1964-67 Chevy II only. This also used the #1571 "Block Plate".
The picture on the page clearly shows the "straps" on the bottom portion.
This information I have given is from the "70 Edition" of the Auto World Sports-Racing Equipment Catalog.
Here is a recently completed epay auction for an early vintage Lakewood scatter shield;

Thanks for clarifying the Lakewood part numbers and associated block plates. Locating an early #1503 Lakewood scattershield and associated #1570 block plate will present a challenge.

The block plate for this early version of a Lakewood scatter shield only covered the upper back part of the scatter shield where the block was. The bottom front was wide open. Later on they made one that covered the whole opening and had louvers or air holes in it, but it still didn't bolt on the bottom like the newer versions do.

Dave , I'm pretty sure for the 69 NHRA Season , the Shield pictured here was Outlawed and LAKEWOOD had the 1 piece bell with sight hole and Louvered Block saver.
A few years after that, around 73-74 ish.,,,the sight hole was outlawed as well....these both had a larger wrap around flange & the holed ones had Square welded on nuts for the block saver. Newer ones had Hex nuts welded on and the even newer ones had just holes with a smaller flange.

Tom,
According to the Lakewood literature a big block Lakewood scattershield, model #1503 would have a corresponding #1570 block plate. The block plate that I have (as seen in the photo) is a #1570 however there are additional mounting holes on the bottom flange. Not sure if this is for a newer version of Lakewood scattershield even though the block plate number is correct.

WOW ! LOVE THE CATALOG....
IM Looking for one just like that up to 1972.
That 1570 plate looks just as I described earlier ....69 issue I believe.
BB had the large starter nose hole knockout. SB Had it too but on the inside for a 10 1/2" clutch.
Those were used for a few years then went to the 3 hole design, then added a much larger crank hole with less outer holes for attachment and less material on the outer diameter like the one Sam has pictured above yours.
The one you have is Perfect for a '68 on up Car assuming it was added new from Lakewood. (the extra lower holes I believe are there for use with other GM shields.)
Those are extremely rare today.
I have this style on my '69 SB 302 w/ Doug Nash M22 2:52 Muncie.
Day2_69Z

Its not for a newer one....its for the bell you have listed. (oops, I meant ,69 & up. The Block Plates for the '68 on back used an identical plate as pictured. With the Bottom Circle not there. It went straight across the
engine block rail exposing the flywheel just as if a "stock tin dust cover" was removed. Extremely Rare, as Most were THROWN AWAY for
Safety/installation issues.
A solution is to find a block plate 1570 and cut off the bottom.....ugggh.
Another fact of the '68 on back removable clutch access Scatter Shield from LAKEWOOD is They were Painted BLACK as pictured above.
The 1 piece were the first ones painted RED..... all the block savers were UN-PAINTED....Until the 80's.....
Some plates have a single starter hole, some have a knockout crescent moon for SB use as the plates interchange.
A BB shield can be used on a 10 1/2" clutch but a SB shield of that era CAN'T be used on an 11" clutch.
Note the L88 uses the SB set up ,,,, they used a 10 1/2 " dual disc and a special light weight flywheel....cool pieces of unobtainium today.

Went to a swap meet last Sunday with a friend. He's cross between a street rodder and a drag racer, so he comes up with a lot of oddball stuff. When he unloaded his parts for sale he had a Chevrolet block plate. There are no numbers stamped on it, and it has only one nut welded on it, which is for the old type starter. I have no idea what brand it is, and it appears to have never been used or cut on. The guy that owns it is named Duane, his cell phone is 574-292-2282 . He wants $75.00 plus postage. Call or text him if it looks like you can use it. Oh, the center hole is 6 7/8 dia, and overall the piece is 17 7/8 from the center of the top mounting hole to the bottom edge.

Mark,
The 1571 block plate you posted is awesome! I was thinking about using one like that however I decided not to because the location of the louvered vents are offset from center (as compared to the 1570 block plate) and the bottom louver is noticeably shorter than the top.
