Here's my write up Bruce....Kind of a backwards members ride... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif
I’ve owned this car since 1985, and paid a whopping $350 for it. I was headed out to buy another car, a 65 390 Galaxie convert when my neighbor (Jim) mentioned he was picking up a Camaro the next day. Jim owned a Sohio station. His local sales rep wanted him to tow this Camaro out of his garage. It had to be moved ASAP. Come to find out, the sales rep’s son Paul actually owned the car and was given an ultimatum upon returning from BGSU…..either he goes or the car goes. Two days later it was towed to my garage. Many years later, Jim mentioned (with a devilish grin) that this was “A Hostile Takeover”!
Purely by coincidence, Paul found me and the Camaro 20+ years later at a local show. It was a night neither of us would ever forget. He was walking around my car telling his son that he had a Camaro just like this. He went on and on looking and staring in disbelief. Finally, I asked him if his name was Paul. To this day, I’ve never seen the color run out of some ones face so quick. He about passed out…After a bit, he phoned his wife and the whole family came up to see his Camaro. His first date with his wife was in that car, she threw up in that car that night and he told me stories of running it flat out on the interstate back and forth to Bowling Green. I’m still trying to get him back behind the wheel. He deserves to drive it again!
Rewind to 1968…… Alice Wallace just married Francis Rodgers. Francis was into Corvettes and took Alice down to Roger Dean Chevrolet to trade in her 1961 Chevy and order a new Camaro. All the paperwork form the title application to the lien papers had Wallace scratched out and Rodgers added. Newlyweds. The Camaro was shipped to Dean on July 31 (per NICB) and Alice picked up her car on Aug 9 …. Alice enjoyed her car until the untimely passing of her husband Francis in Oct of 77. She in turn passed the car on to a family member ( Lynn) who drove it until his death, then passed it on to his sister( Maryann). Maryann used the car during her days at Bowling Green, and then sold it to Paul in 81. The car was now covered in BGSU stickers and a National Miniature Schnauzer decal on the quarter window.
I had done my research with the state of West Virginia and even spoke with Alice on the phone. She didn’t remember much about the car until I mentioned the Schnauzer decal. She then perked up…… ”That must be my car, I breed Schnauzers”. She then went on to tell me about her late husband and his passion for Corvettes. Roger Dean was a sales leader in Corvettes so it was the logical dealer to order from.
The Camaro…
What Francis ordered was a 1968 Camaro Ash Gold Coupe with a L-30 327, M-35 Powerglide transmission,2.56 rear (should not have been available), center console, Clock, A/C, Deluxe interior , black vinyl top, AM 8-track, tilt wheel, rear defog, Vigilite, space saver, bumper guards, and a rear antenna….LOADED.
Currently it is(and will always be)in “DAY 2” trim. Some items added are: American mags, Lakewood bars, Harrell clamps, headers, SW gauges, GM intake & Z-28 valve covers, 462 heads, blueprinted 10.5 to 1 block, TH-350, 4000 stall converter, 4:10 rear, GM rear spoiler and a A&A front spoiler.

Thank you all for the positive comments!
To comment on Woj’s post…
I was on my way to a car show in Solon Oh on a Tuesday night. Along the way, there was an accident and traffic had to be directed down a residential side street. Well, traffic was bumper to bumper in the opposite lane and my lane was wide open so I was moving . Just as I was approaching a semi in the other lane, he clipped some low power lines….they landed on my car. It was like being in a cable car with the lines laying right down the middle of my car at 35 mph. Then they bull whipped off the driver side and took the paint off the left front. Thankfully my just restored/dated remote mirror was safe from harm. Insurance was a fight, nobody was to blame….soooo time to rip the car apart. While debating how to proceed with a repaint, I decided to go all out and use up some NOS sheet metal I acquired. I had an entire NOS clip on it already, so I added a full set of quarters, outer well houses, and get this… rockers (at least the last 20” or so). I was in luck that the sheet metal was all old old stock. The quarters were dated very close to mine (digit off) and the rest had dates that fell into the approx. build date frame as well. I had a good guy (Danny & Jim) at Flatline Custom do the paint work and work with me on the sheet metal and putting things back as GM did.
The pics I took were at an old Junk yard that had recently closed and was up for sale. I usually pass it daily and always picture some old cars out front. Well finally I made time and headed up there at 6 am on a Sunday to wait for the good light to come in…. It must have been 95` and humid…LOL
I love driving this car, the "Day two" power are like a time machine. Crank up some tunes, mash the pedal and keep it straight!

Mid 80's at Norwalk Raceway.... stone stock 327-275, orig 2.56 open rear, and a set of Lakewoods... 14.80's ?? was all I could tune out of the old guy...and believe me, that was humpin with the factory Glide ! I think I blew the rear either that day or very soon after....Spider gears and a badly tore up ring gear. I have a few teeth left as a souvenir.

There is some great Karma in the car world. Or is it actually Carma.. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif I helped a friend out with a Dealer decal for a killer restoration and then out of the blue found another set for my car on eBay. It took me 20+ years to find the first one that is on there now. I had to buy a Corvair for it, then have it shipped from across the country. Next it went to Jon Wright CCP to have it restored. These two pop up last week for a super cheap buy it now. Carma...It's what it's all about!
Here is a shot of the original location prior to restoration. I welded these holes shut two months before I found the first badge. Next are the latest eBay badges. Both NOS from Charleston WV....

Thanks Jim! Ash Gold with Ivy gold interior.
Yes, that is where they put the 8-Track. Kind of a crazy place to put it, but there is no room for it anyplace else. It does make a great arm rest, too bad you can see it light up or read the control knobs. Kind of hit and miss every time you need to adjust it. I use it with a 8-track to cassette adapter, then a cassette to 1/8 output jack to plug my iPod in it. Retro with a modern touch...Sounds great and no need to butcher up my interior with modern stuff. Almost time to crank up a little Aerosmith.... "Back in the Saddle"

Spent the weekend at the Cleveland Rocks Chevy Show put on by the CCI/ State Reps/ Ecklers. We had some nice weather and a nice turn out of cars, lots of Tri 5's. The last time I did one of their shows was in 2000, time flies! Today's awards were a nice surprise, scored 987/1000 Platinum, First in class, Best paint, & Best Interior.
Here's a pic from Thursday, the lot had not filled up yet.

Thank you all for the kind words! It’s the good friends around me that make this hobby enjoyable.
In all honesty, I don’t think it’s fair to use the Platinum label on this car. In that show circuit or any other. Some shows are a bit more dependent on judging teams that forgive or just plain overlook a lot of sins. It is what it is I guess. Just more surprised a Gold/Green car got some kudos in a sea of Red’s and Blue’s …..First time for everything right?

After listening to the men and women tell their stories at the Norwood Reunion last year, you gotta love these so-called judges. How did they make a hole for the 4-speed to line up with a body "hanging on the line" with an automatic? Call on The Chisel Man! True story.

Jeff,
That was David Harris's recollection. I was there when he told you that! Background: When there was a missed element over at Fisher Body on the coach work it was often not caught until just before the car was sequenced for assembly on the Chassis side because there was no reason to really look. In this example the front of the tunnel was missing the hole for the standard transmission. This condition was corrected by cut off wheel and then final trimmed for clearance by the "Chisel man".

I've been hunting this piece for a few years. Finally got my prize! This showed up on eBay years ago for $99.95. No way was I going to pay that for a frame I didn't need. I like to own my hobby not the other way around. Anyway, the price dropped a little at a time and finally made it's way down to $9.99...time to buy.
Roger dean started as a Lincoln- Merc dealer in Athens Ohio before expanding to Chillicothe, Columbus and Lexington Ky. Not sure exactly when he got his Chevrolet franchise, but I do know why. His love for the Corvette. So long Ford...Hello Charleston, Huntington WV, and West Palm Beach...it's still going strong today.

Here's some shots of his Chevrolet Dealer in WV. This was actually post Dean, he sold the dealer to Tag Galyean in 1971. It, like the Linc-Merc dealers in Ohio, was WV's largest Chevrolet dealer. They were the highest volume Corvette dealer as well...not sure for how long.

Surprising because he made a lot of money thru financing since he owned the finance company. His Linc-Merc dealers did really well.

Bill, I can't believe the amount of Dealers you remember. Your mind is a steel trap!
Here is a pair of shots from Athens. The first is the building prior to opening day, this was taken in 1946. The second was after taken in 1947.

Here's where I think it gets interesting...
Dean opened a new Dealer in Columbus in 1955 with a price tag of a Million dollars...Huge. Then, I found a ad for his Ohio Chevrolet dealership in 1956....I think it was the Columbus location??? What happened to Ford?

The local "street guy's / racers" in WV had a interesting acronym for FORD after many were beat by a Dean Chevrolet....I swear I've heard this from several different locals...FU&K Ol' ROGER DEAN!
I've heard stories about them lining up on the downtown streets and getting into stop light races with another local Mopar dealer while they were trying to do Demo's. Anything to lure a potential customer to Dean's lot.
Hope you enjoyed a bit of History on one of the unsung greats from the day. I'm always looking for more info... hint hint <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif

I've been looking for a new trailer and don't need to be hasseled by Troopers after hearing so many towing stories . So, I figured it was time to weigh the Camaro. Headed down to the certified scales and got an actual curb weight. With 3/8 tank of fuel, American Mags, and no driver it came in @ 3440 lbs. Surprisingly a bit higher than I estimated. With me in it...yikes. Options like A/C & 8-trk can pack on the pounds!

Scored a few neat Dean items for the Camaro. A fellow sYc member and great friend Woj was in West Palm and picked these up for me. Still owned by the Dean family, and as close as I can get to the old Charleston dealership. Same logo since at least 1953, plate frames and stickers...Thank you Phil! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/worship.gif

Thanks guys!
Mike,
It was a LOT better this year, esp on Sunday. I think the weather had a lot to do with it. I'd go as far and say it was their best day in the last 10 years, 225+ cars. They had some neat first gens, a killer 70 L-78... The first and last 2016 COPOS. I never had mine judged, just display. Settlemire came over to talk and surprised me.
BTW...There was a 68 claiming to be Grumpy's Toy IV there as well. Everyone can make their own decisions on this one.

Saw that at the PID show in Bridgeville in July. Not sure what to think about it, but the wife is vehement about it being a Grumpy Camaro.

I like to smile and nod....It's best to form ones own opinion on this Camaro. I'm sure as hell not going to poke a stick in that nest.
