View Full Version : Any Mopar A-833 4 Speed Gurus? 18 Spline Aluminum

I have not had much experience with A-833 transmissions. I got this in on trade the other day and am trying to figure out what it is.

From the little amount I know about these it looks to have an A-body tailhousing and has the stronger 440/Hemi 18 spline input shaft/gears. The part that puzzles me is it is all aluminum. Does anyone know anything about these? Is it an aftermarket piece, factory race unit, a converted late model overdrive tranny, or something else entirely?

Sorry for the poor picture quality. I snapped the shot early this morning and it was freezing outside, well California freezing.

Thanks,

Jason

Ummmmm....WOW. Thanks Steve. Is there any way to prove that with casting numbers, etc? A member on the moparts site said it was a Direct Connection catalog part. I don't want to misrepresent it. I thought the Direct Connection cases came steel bushed for the cluster pin which this one does not appear to be. I think I remember you posting that you owned a 68 Hemi Dart so I imagine you have much more knowledge than most on the subject.

Thanks,

Jason

This basket case trans also came with the deal. It also appears to be an early aluminum A-833. This one has the trunion output. Interesting stuff, I just don't know much about it.

Thanks again,

Jason

Only 833 aluminum box I ever had was from the 1970's and ended up being an economy 3 speed with overdrive if I recall correctly.

i think the front collar was larger than the iron cases.

The Direct Connection case was modeled after the Super Stock piece. It's been a long time and I don't think I have any photos of the tranny that came with my car (which actually turned out to be Dick Landy's four speed car).

You might want to try asking on moparts.com. Someone there should be able to chime in.

Here's a pretty nice link on the A833, although I recall it is specific to the overdrive version.

That particular trans came stock in my '87 Chevy pickup (aluminum case).

Definitely DC - race or catalog trans

Thanks guys! It sounds like it will be difficult to determine whether the complete transmission is a Direct Connection catalog piece or a part installed in a factory race car. I guess the odds are it was a catalog piece since I imagine they made a lot more for catalog sales. The only thing that keeps making me think it may be a factory race or early design part is the case does not appear to be steel bushed unless it is done from the inside and not all the way through the case.

Any ideas on the basket case trans? Brewer's Performance on the Moparts site said the tail was a 65 race hemi part with no speedo gear boss.

Here is a link to the Moparts discussion in case anyone is interested:

If anyone was curious about the bare maincase, I found a thread on the moparts site about it. The 2801176 casting number was found in an old Petty Enterprises catalog and it shows the part number for the case.

The thread was on this site and can be found here:

Also here are the catalog pictures:
