I've seen this stripe on a number of Nova frames/left frame horn. Anyone know what it's significance is?.............and, is it orange, like the engine paint?

Bill, I think you are reading the number upside down. It looks like 869 to me.

Bill I see 2 stripes on the side of the frame rail. My 68 L79 had 2 stripes. I thought they might be some sort of witness mark for bumper bracket bolts. I worked in an automotive factory building steering columns and every bolt that was torqued down had a witness mark on it. But why the line and not just mark the bolt head is what puzzling. Also why only the driver side? I would just duplicate what you have found not what everyone else has done. That is where people go wrong IMHO with witness mark restorations.

My survivor 1969 SS nova has 2 orange stripes on the drivers side also. maybe the 68 and early 69 cars got 2 stripes (11B). I mostly saw just one orange stripe on the drivers side.

The date looks like 4 8 69....Is that in line with the build date?

Bill...I think you know that photo is from the sub-frame of the car I sold you. It reads April 8, 1969..which lines up with the production of the car. I left that untouched when I painted the frame...the stripe is orange and the date stencil is white...it was common on Novas of that vintage...though I don't recall ever seeing it on a 1970??

Thanks for all the replies gentleman. With the Nova finished, and the snow starting to fly, these are some of the details to look at for the winter. it's certainly not a "correct" car. Just goofing around with some details, as the car would have been from the beginning.

may not be a correct car but you can make all that kinda stuff correct as you are because at one point in its life it had all those markings. Good job!

I have wondered if all frames have these or if they were sent in stacks, and one in the stack was done. While I have seen them. On the three original owner deuces that we've worked on including mine, I've not found the markings and I took the layers off slowly by hand looking for them. I could understand if they were lightly applied, but both the stripe, and nbrs/letters should be separate and you should get one, if not the other if one was applied poorly.
