View Full Version : Flywheel, clutch and pressure plate

Im in the need of the above components for a 69Z - stock 302 motor - stock 4 sp m21 trans.

I thought about getting the correct gm part number flywheel dated etc, but now reconsidering this.

Any recommendations on what way to go. The date and part number match is not critical for this application.

Flywheel is the 10.5 inch - gm part number 3971021

Luk Clutch Kits. Can not believe how nice they are. I am not always easy on my Z and have no problems. Feels just like an original and does not break your wallet. There are a few guys on the Site that use and recommend them also Fast. I had my original wheel resurfaced and installed the Kit. I have absolutely NO issues with mine and they are easy to obtain. Auto supplies carry them.

Luk is very good..and buy a good flywheel. I resurfaced the original one on my copo..after 900 miles it really looks bad (heat checked, crackes etc) <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif ...I'm replacing it with a new hays.

the reason your flywheel looked bad is because as soon as the car starts up you are on 9 grand and doing burn outs and dry hops coming up to the starting line! 900 of your miles is like 25,000 of a &quot;normal&quot; person driving like me. HA HA LOL! Stay warm Gumba!

I really like the center force dual friction that's behind my hemi. Pushes easy and works good. Using the same on my z when it's done

Ed only needs first and reverse but that may change! Luk is good for any 6,500 rpm blasts whenever you want to go there. I am a now fan of LUK Clutches.

On the topic of the flywheel - I discovered I have a flywheel part number ink stamp - 3973452 and it has a casting number 3973455. This came with the car and it is nos - is this a later one, still usable for the Z?

Sachs is another option. Well made and I can't break the one I have behind the LT-1 in my Z, but then I don't have big tires on it.... yet.

I would not resurface your old flywheel. I would recommend buying a new one. I know that resurfacing a flywheel is normal practice and usually works, but new flywheels are cheap.

I own two 69 Z's and a 67 Vette L-79, and a 67 Vette L-36. All have the LUK clutch kits except for one of the Z's. The LUK kits are good and inexpensive, but not as good as the center force clutch kit. When I replace another clutch I will use a center force kit. The CF clutch pedal is smoother, and I have had the springs on the LUK PP give me a little bit of a &quot;sticky&quot; pedal. It is hard to explain but once the PP gets warm the pedal is not as smooth when I engage the clutch. It is getting better now with some wear but like I said I would go with a Center Force kit.

I have had no clutch problems at all with the LUK. never had heating issues and never had chatter yet and I run big tires in the back. I ran Scheiffer, McCloud and Hays all my life with really no problems. I went to the LUK because of recommendations from guys here and to me it feels like a stock setup and I put at least 600-700 miles on it so far. Sometimes resurfacing your wheel does not get down to all the cracks that sometimes you can't see. I have a good clutch guy that owns a machine shop here in town and he spent some extra times cutting and cleaning my wheel. Unless you are drag racing consistently I see no problems at all with a &quot;good&quot; resurfaced wheel and a Luk clutch. Most problems I have seen in clutches is when the owners have a hard time driving their cars. Especially SB cars with high rear end gears like Z/28's. They are a pain to drive with 3.73's and down in my opinion especially if the car has a close ratio box in it.

We are putting a LUK clutch kit into Benjamin's '69 BB Nova, we had it balanced - and it (surprisingly) didn't need any weights added. I bought it because it was cheap, and I assume that any kid will burn up his first clutch until he/she gets the hang of it. So, I bought it as a 'disposable' unit, we'll see how it goes!

I picked up a Brute Force from Rock Auto a few years ago I was planning on using if/when I go back to a 10 1/2&quot; set up. Price wise it was comparable to the Sachs, but I am curious if the Brute Force is any good since I can't find anybody that has used one. Anybody know this Brand of clutch? If it isn't so good, I may just stick with the 11&quot; setup I'm using with my 302.

I had a 11&quot; Borg Warner Brute Force clutch in my BB 427 Nova and had really good luck with it. It was very similar to my Hays Street Strip that's in my Chevelle now. No chatter and it hooks at any rpm. It is a little heavier on the foot than stock but will out perform a stock clutch every time.

Sweet. The 11&quot; installed in my car I'm unclear of brand, but the pressure plate is purple and the clutch disc has 6 or 8 pucks????, I can't remember now and a aftermarket flywheel, which I think had SFI on it, whatever that means. No issues and hooks great in all four gears...the pedal is fine for me but I can squat 550 lbs easy so it isn't an issue there. I read about the Brute FORCE clutch on Camaro Research Group forum that was posted by JerryM SO i thought I would go with it when I put the 302 back in.

I got into weight lifting to body tone, at 155 lbs, while learning Kook Sul Wan (Korean Martial Arts) while I was stationed overseas in the USAF in England and a friend wanted to see, I did too, how much I could squat and at 30 years old I was at my healthiest. I'll be 61 in July...can't do it now. Has anybody seen where my body went...I'm still looking for it. Oh, yeah, and 5'8&quot; at 155 lbs looks way different then 5'8&quot; at 250 lbs.
