I'm not sure if it's correct for '69 but it will look better than the convenient store one that's on the car now. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

I sent Mark a tip that worked pretty well for cleaning and de-rusting parts that I used to clean up my gas cap that was in similar shape as the one he has here. I soak parts in vinegar. My cap was only in the solution for an hour or so. Some items may take days. Mark asked me to post this on his add, so here it is. While not perfect, my cap came out real well, well enough I decided not to re-plate. I like the original survivor look better. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/01/full-13059-9323-nikon_1_1145.jpg

Okay....first and foremost....this question is NOT about Mark or what was sold....I have NO issues with him at all. I'm just trying to figure out exactly what I have.

My question is, what exactly is this gas cap for? It doesn't fit my tank although I have been told it was changed at some point. So I took it to Jerry Frailey who still has his original '69 tank...it doesn't fit, tried it on a original '67 Chevelle gas tank...it doesn't fit.

The cap I have on my car fit's all three tanks I compared it to.

Below is a side picture of the two. The one on the left is off my car and the one on the right is the one I purchased. The difference is obvious but I don't know what it came off of.

Any help would be great.

Thanks, Kurt

Kurt,
The reason it won't fit is because 69 Chevelles used a non vented cap part # 1376973. 69 Chevelle station wagon and El Camino used a similar vented cap like what you bought but there are a few caps that are vented that are very similar so it would need to be matched up to a tank to be sure. Looks more like the style cap used on 69 Camaro to me but I'm no Camaro expert. As to Pete's suggestion, 70-up California EEC caps were also not vented so it's not that.

Are you sure the '69 El Camino used a vented cap? Not argueing; just asking. I've gone back n forth with this for years with conflicting information.

thanks

Kurt,
It looks a lot like the one on my 70 Chevelle tank, but would have to compare side-by-side to be sure.

I got a pm from a member here saying it might be for Nova/Camaro as they used a vented cap and a Chevelle didn't. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif

I do know my '68 Nova had a vented cap because when my wife drove it....she would accelerate quicker than I ever would and gas would come out of it if the tank was full. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

I believe the current cap for my car is NOT vented.

I've actually had a couple people pm me about the gas cap. For right now I'm going to hang on to it. Maybe someone will have the correct gas cap for my Chevelle to trade.

Hi Kurt,
Here's a few pics of the 1376973 part # cap that I believe is correct for 69 Chevelle. I have a few variations regarding the clocking of the lever handle that maybe somebody more versed in 69's can explain but it's definitely a deeper shoulder on the retaining tabs than the vented versions have which should explain why you can't get the vented cap to seal on a 69 tank.
Verne, can't say for sure positively on the El Camino application except that all my reference material 68-69 printing Chevrolet parts catalogs all call out for a vented cap on El Camino and station wagon.

Great shots Chris. I also am 100% sure the non vented cap in your picture is correct for the 69 Chevelle car. Easy cap to find in NOS condition, look for Stant G32, Mopar used these too.
I also understand the wagons and Elky's use a vented cap, what I do not know for sure is weather it had the "Anti Surge feature" like the one in your picture, and the cap Kurt bought. I suspect it may have been this cap in the photo below. "Vented with no anti surge popet" most likley not needed because of the location of the fillere neck on these vehicals

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/02/full-2974-9858-vented_to_atmosphere_no_anti_s

On a side note on the Round no ears anti surge cap Stant G46a, these were used starting around 1962 through at least 1970 across the GM line. Does any one know when the cap with the 2 ears started showing up ?
Chris, I have had several caps with the handle assembled either way, most likley just the way they stacked the parts during assembly ? The tabs still end up on the centerline.

Here are a couple of pictures of Jerry Frailey's original gas cap off his '69 Chevelle.

It appears the tabs are installed two different ways.....they're not typical.
