So I was watching this show that I had yet to see, "Car Fix". Two guys that appear to more dangerous than knowledgable. They take a perfectly good 71 Camaro with a mint body and proceed to chop it to pieces with BS modifications. Granted the car was a 307 automatic, but the body was mint. They pulled up the carpet and the original red oxide floors were in place. The oem sound deadening the original carpet etc. Under the hood the original radiator sticker was still on the radiator cover, original master cylinder, brake booster etc. I wish these "auto restorers" would take rust buckets and hack them up not great original cars.

Yeah, I know what you mean. These people are butchers. Really no need to take what seems to be a solid original car and modify the crap out of it. Probably worth more just left alone as a true survivor.

I couldn't believe he was operating the cutting tools with SHORTS ON!!!! They could have hacked up a junk yard car with all the mods they did.

I watch the show quite often and they are not "butchers" as you've called them. Are they treating the car as you might want them to; maybe not but, not everyone has the same vision for their cars.
The guy doing the work is Jared Zimmerman and I am almost certain that he used to work for Troy Trepanier. Lou Santiago is also not a hack and knows his stuff; I think we just need to realize that not everyone wants a cookie cutter Camaro. Sure they are modifying a nice clean car but, isn't that something everyone would prefer to start off with? I mean come on; it's not like they're modifying a Z28 or L78 SS for God's sake.

It's no different than what I did to the Nova. I set out to buy a 69 Nova, with a good body, with no rust, then I made a cool hot rod out of it. It was a 32,000 6cyl/power glide/10 bolt. Now it's a big block/M22/Moser 12 bolt, and way more fun. The Camaro in the show is a basic 307 auto, with a nice rust free body too. I have the numbers matching trailer queens too, and they are a blast to own, but I find nothing wrong with hot rodding an old 307 Camaro. Different strokes............

We are going to put a 66 hemi in a 70 Cuda 340 4 speed ralley cluster car. Mopar guys are going nuts over that. It is going into something. What should we put it in? Certainly not a Duster. We had a 6 cylinder a/c 3 speed stick 70 Barracuda. It was way more rare than the 340 car but that did not make it worth more. I may not always agree with what someone has done to there car but that is individuality. These shows are to inspire people to not just settle for normal. Jared is a very talented person. Every car I build I get better and my skills are broader. These shows are to illustrate what can be done. I rarely like any car Foose does on Overhaulin, but I respect his talent and sincerity. So I will not pick his cars apart.

These guys hosting the show were not changing drive trains from a low HP car and putting in big HP drivetrains. I believe most agree do this if this is your preference. The unfortunate practice IMHO, is to take a perfectly good body car and take a cutting wheel to it make body mods. If cutting up a car is your thing why not do this to a car that needs new panels? Not a car that is in perfectly good shape where one could put a L78 or LS3 in it provided it was a 6 cylinder or low HP car.

Because they can! The show provides them with the car, the tools, the parts, everything. You have to admit, it is a lot easier to work on a rust free car than a bucket! The car needed quarters, and a rear valance. It was a 307 grocery getter, they will make a wicked resto-mod out of it. I like it.

I think I have to agree with the "Bill Rose" philosophy on this one. I don't know of the specific show or car in question, but using a good-rust-free 307 powered Camaro body to build a moder day hot-rod can't be such a bad thing. Other than a re-body for a '71 Z/28 or a '71 SS, that car got a new lease on life. Had it been something more desirable my opinion might differ.

I make a habit of Not watching these shows. A few, very few are somewhat realistic, but that may be by accident. The producers of the shows have endless budgets and foot the bill for most of this stuff. More than that, they are the ones behind the scenes causing all of the hate and discontent between the shop crew. Add to that the misconceptions that it creates in the general public as to how this industry really works.
I had one of these producers call me a few months ago to ask about putting my shop on one of these shows. They were actually looking for a boat restorer to do a show on and had seen our video on youtube of the 1950 Chris Craft the we did a few years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cGSChFzKyY Anyway, they asked about our shop and how the crew gets along and do we ever go out or get together after work. I could tell from the way she was asking the questions, she was trying to steer me to see if we had a bunch or drama in the shop. When I told her point blank that we do get together from time to time, but we don't have a bunch of drama and that I don't put up with that in my shop. I told her that it is not what my customers are paying for and that atmosphere breeds poor quality, she quickly ended the conversation and said that our shop was not what they were looking for.
As for me, I love to watch Overhaulin, but fast forward through the pranks. I want to see the build and what goes into it. Even that show distorts the industry to the general public. I have seriously had people call me and ask if I could restore their car in a week and were disappointed when I told them it was impossible without a crew of 30 people and a limitless budget. I can put everybody in the shop on one project and bring in a couple of other people that I trust and we can get it done fairly quickly, but get ready to dig deep. It is not going to be cheap.

I agree with the drama crap; I enjoy watching talented people create beautiful cars but, can't stand the made up drama. The pranks on Overhaulin', the BS that is shown on Graveyard Carz; etc. One show that was good and didn't have any of that drama crap was Gears which was hosted by Stacey David. He just built the cars and showed you how it was done.

I'm with you! I like most everything that Stacy David has done for years.
I'm going to plug Netflix here. My family watches it so much that we dropped cable. The thing I like is it has several "Build" shows and you can fast forward through the crap. Makes for some good Guy time and veg out and watch some other people build for a while. My wife doesn't understand it. She tells me "you do this all day long and then want to watch other people doing the same stuff on your off time?"

What car shows does Netflix have? I thought it was just for my wife and daughter to watch "chick" show repeats.

Overhaulin, Street Customs, American Hot Rod, American Chopper, Ultimate Car Build Off and I think there are a couple more.

The stuff on prime time is fluff. You have to read past the MADE UP drama, that is manufactured for entertainment purposes. Duck Dynasty is not any better, they dumb those guys down for ratings. Look at their educational pasts. The shows that are not prime time are more educational. They encourage viewers to think outside the box. I watch as many as I can even the 4x4 shows and learn things I can use and have on our drag cars. DO NOT BE SO CLOSED MINDED

I have been trying, trying, trying, to watch Graveyard Cars. Looks like the main guy is very knowledgeable and they do really nice work on some cool cars, but the fake drama makes it unwatchable. That guy who wanted to drive the Jeep was ridiculous.

My son is the curator for a major aviation museum known for keeping warbirds flying. Same deal. They were approached and declined. The drama that the producers wanted to create was beyond belief. Thankfully we have DVRs and FF.

If you ever saw one of those 'hacking car show's work too you would cringe. Its crap work at best.
