I'm not sure if this is the correct section of the board for this or not but I need help locating a car.

I have a Wisconsin title number and VIN if that would help. Seems to have been there since 1998. DMV will not release owner's information due to privacy laws.

You can PM me or e-mail [email protected]

Thanks.

Chris, here is a response I got from a friend on Facebook. His name is Pete Graves.

"Will have to check, we bought ours in '98 and sold it late '99 to a maintenance guy who worked at Cedar Crest. 305/5speed with radio delete car, had 83k on it, and ran 14.42@ 94mph."

Needless to say.....we might be on to something.

It's confirmed that a friend of mine (Bob) bought it from Pete. Bob sold it to a coworker 's son. I'll try to get more information.

KURT!

I just got off the phone with Pete - great guy! He's e-mailing me pictures of when he had it and the timeslips from the track! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/laugh.gif Bob had it next, I have his number but it may be better if you or Pete contact him first - I don't really want to catch him off guard on it. He said he sold it to a woman who worked with or for him and she had bought it for her son.

Any more info you can relay is greatly appreciated - I can't believe I'm this close to finding it!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/laugh.gif

To say I've had some highs & lows with this car would be an understatement! Purchased new on 04/16/87, Stolen 04/27/87, recovered 04/28/87 got to drive it again two weeks later after it got out of the body shop! It would be cool to drive it again! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/laugh.gif

Thanks guys, I doubt it will be 6 days but it will definitely be less than 6 months. He's willing to sell it and that's all I needed to hear. He's supposed to be taking some pictures for me over the next couple of days and then Pete & Kurt will be going over to check it out and assess it for me. It's still original paint & failing so it will need a full repaint and the interior is out of it and has been for a while - stalled project which works in my favor.

I know I'm at a disadvantage due to the emotional attachment but I don't expect it will sell for more than it could be replaced for. If push comes to shove I could always trade him my 97 Firehawk - That's an offer I don't think too many guys would have to think long about. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

I got an AutoCheck vehicle History Report - it showed registration events & dates, even title numbers but didn't give names or street addresses, just city & state. It was in Janesville from 1998 to now & Iowa before that.

Thanks, I have been looking for a certain car, used Nmvtis and all I was able to get was the state that it was registered in, in 1982. Congratulations on your search and find. My vin is 13 characters and will not work with AutoCheck.

So we got it on a lift last night & there's good news & there's bad news....

1st the good news - after spending it's first two winters in Boston & the last 16 years in Wisconsin there is damn near no rust on the car and no major accidents/repairs. What little there is can easily be fixed and the minor dings & dents can be handled with the full repaint. That's the easy part!

The bad news - the current owner who's had the car for about 11 years has a dog that he brings with him EVERYWHERE and the dog TRASHED the original interior. The interior will need a complete re-do in the hard to find, 1 year only grey custom cloth with deluxe luggage compartment trim.

I'm not overpaying for what it is especially considering the rare combination of options & my history with it so I guess it's not that bad. Just more work than I had been expecting.

The first picture is the rear body panel where the bumper cover attaches to it, 2 - is the driver's floor seam where the firewall comes down, 3 - back seat now, 4 - front seats now, 5 - what it should/will look like.

A few more details have come out and unfortunately I have to be honest with myself that this was not meant to be. Current owner's wife has upped the price to a stupid level and won't budge, owner says he's got to live with her. Rear main seal & valve guides are both shot so add engine rebuild to the list, clutch is still the original so add that while we're at it.

It's not the cost of the car that is the deal breaker it's the 15-20k that would have to come after it for paint, interior & driveline. Add to that the non-numbers matching SR block & heads & I'm really paying way too much for this story. I spoke to a couple friends over the weekend (members here) and they kind of brought me to my senses. If I was just buying a car - I needed to walk away....if I was buying a story - it was going to be expensive!

I'm still looking for a nice 87-89 T-top or convertible 305/5spd black over grey IROC, but I think my time with this one is long gone. Thanks everyone for following along, I wish this had ended differently.

Kurt, I'm dropping something in the mail for you today - Grab Pete and go have a few beers on me. Thanks again for all of your help! I've offered to send all of my documentation to the current owner so that he can keep it with the car - he hasn't responded.

That bytes, considering the condition of the car. Sounds like they were just upping the price due to your previous ties to the car, regardless whether it was the wife or not.

Reminds me of the Fast and Loud episode when they tried to purchase that Jaguar coupe that held the Cannon Ball Run best time until they broke it. It was going to be junked and they bought it for like $200 for scrap, then Gas Monkey paid something like $5k for it. You're right, paying for a story.

There are a lot of IROCs out there for sale that would work, but still sorry you didn't get yours back.

Nice car Dan, low mileage too! They look so nice in that condition.

I just got off the phone with the guy in MA who bought my TA back in 1996 He sold it about 3 years after I sold it to him, it went to New Hampshire then. He hasn't bought anything since, however he does have the parts from back then including a set of NOS quarters & a hood! He's going to make a list of what he has and let me know what he wants for them - figures it's time to let them go. Some good may come from this yet? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/laugh.gif

Not many stories really to tell just yet. My car time has been spent largely with other cars and this one has been shuttled to the back corner of the barn while I collect parts for it. The interior was destroyed by the last owner's dogs, he had put another one in it (partially) from a different year along with some aftermarket parts. I've collected two correct 1987 interiors for it, first a black (charcoal) one only because I found that first and now have the correct grey custom cloth interior for it, that I just picked up this fall.

On the unfortunate side, the car really does need a full repaint - which I'm still on the fence on if I want to do or not. I would like the car to be able to tell it's stories, but it has so many of them to tell! Lots of dings & dents from garage & parking lot incidents over the last 30 years, but the rest of the paint is as it was when it left me 28 years ago.

On a more serious note, my father, who got the very first ride in it, the night I picked it up, passed suddenly only days after I got it back and that loss has caused me to re-evaluate much of what I have and do in life. The blue house in the picture above is still owned by my sisters & I two years later and is filled with 50 years of memories and personal items/collections we need to sort through. That house is a continuous reminder of the burden that gets left behind and I am looking to lighten my load here.

So the plan now is once the weather gets nice, sell a bunch of cars, get this one detailed as nicely as possible, get the interior in & enjoy it a bit.

02-21-2017, 07:22 PM
Thanks. I was convinced I would have to buy a really nice car and steal the interior out of it, swap in the black one and resell it - and still might. This one should do well enough though for my plans at this point.

Lots of dings & dents from garage & parking lot incidents over the last 30 years, but the rest of the paint is as it was when it left me 28 years ago.

Sorry about your father. If it is just dings and (minor) dents a good PDR (paintless dent removal) guy can work wonders without touching the paint. Might be a good place to start before a full repaint.

Those are nice looking seats. I ended up having covers (NOS grade greys) made for me after I located some correct original 1987 Collins and Aikin yardage.

You have a great looking IROC there!

I just read the whole story. Congratulations on being able to locate your old car and eventually being able to get it back. Sorry to hear about your father though. Good luck with your car!

Thanks Ray - been sorting out my parents house each weekend this month - it will take some time.

Car will be pulled out in the next week or two and will be on it's way for body & paint - will ride again this year.
