Just wanted to post some pictures of a 1972 SSJ that I just had delivered a few days ago.
It's a car I've been after since around 2002 when I first learned about it. Here's a brief list of the goodies on this one:
- Hurst SSJ Digital Computer (only one I've seen in my 28 years of following these cars)
- Hurst-installed mobile telephone ($2100 option at that time) (only one I've seen...)
- Hurst-installed alarm system
- American Racing 200S wheels
- power everything!
- electric seat back locks
- 455 engine
- interior, underhood, trunk lamp group
- factory 8-track w/ red-dot stereo
- cornering lamps
- El Clasico package added on top of the Hurst conversion on this car consists of:
- mini refrigerator
- mini wet bar
- gold plush carpeting
- landau bars
- padded vinyl top with reduced size rear window
- chromed metal nose plate
61,000 original miles - restored car due to neglect.

A very interesting note regarding the "El Clasico" package: the company, WISCO, that did this advertised this modification for Cadillacs, Rivieras, and "other cars". They were located at 27670 Groesbeck Highway in Rosevile, MI, which is also the same address the Hurst SSJ GPs were sent for their 10-day conversions. WISCO (aka Webasto International Sunroof Co.) did the Hurst conversions and these El Clasico conversions under the same roof, and this Grand Prix received both conversions.
I'm concluding that the original buyer, a doctor out of Kentucky, ordered the SSJ conversion as well as the El Clasico conversion at the same time. Hurst simply subletted to WISCO to get the SSJs done, all the while WISCO was doing Cadillacs, Buicks, and probably just about any other line.
Other options WISCO offered at the time: television, bar, safe, rear deck wheel, plush carpet, custom upholstery, and curtains.
I didn't think I'd like the landau bars in the pictures I had, but this car is very striking, and very unusual.
Sadly, I had to part with my recently acquired 71 GP 4-speed, but this car is one heckuva replacement!

That car Is COOL!!
That's a Harmon Racetronic computer you have in there.
My Uncle had one in his Buick.
You have the super deluxe RACETRONIC III model to boot.
Check out this HARMON Catalog I posted earlier w/photos of Linda in an SSJ.

RACETRONIC is shown in lower right in 2nd photo below.

Sweet car! I remember an all original black 69 428 4-spd SJ a friend of a friend bought back in the mid 80's. It too was a beautiful car.

I'll post a breakdown of options pricing shortly, but yes, this car cost someone a fortune when new.
Also, here's an early monkey wrench to add to this car's oddball status: Jim Mattison from PHS called me yesterday intrigued by this car and what the PHS document DIDN'T show. This car does not have the 50-012 drop-ship code on it's paperwork (50-012 meant send to Hurst Performance), AND, it appears to have started life as an SJ model at the dealership, Parkway Motors in Prestonsburg, KY. That suggests that this car was at the dealership first, outside of the normal Hurst SSJ ordering channel, and it also suggest that either the dealer or the original owner chose these 2 packages on a stock SJ car. The Hurst color brochure said the car must be a Model J to work with the conversion.
It sounds like Hurst agreed to do this car despite it being a Model SJ. I just removed the RF SSJ & Hurst emblems with dental floss and found the two factory holes where the model SJ badge would have been. Hurst may have covered those holes with their emblems to get around them being left once the model SJ emblem was removed. That would make the placement of these emblems different from every other SSJ if they needed to cover those holes. A Model J car had no emblem or holes.
Mattison questioned the car's authenticity, but with the correct and difficult-to-reproduce sunroof with drain tubes, and the digital computer, there's little doubt this car was done by Hurst and WISCO in Roseville. It's just done right.
I'm almost in contact with the original owner, but he's currently out of town. The dealership is long gone, so that's a dead end. I'll post what I learn from him.
