Is there anyone in the Akron OH area that would be willing to look at a 69 Chevelle for me in the next couple days? I'm more than willing to compensate for time and travel. TIA. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/worship.gif

Unfortunately, Woj is out of town so he can't accompany Grady and Mike <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif Plus I am guessing the car owner would feel extremely intimidated with all 3 of them on the job!

Not sure if Grady & Mike went to lunch or not, but they DID inspect the car <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/worship.gif Let's just say it will not be heading to AZ, or at least not to my house <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif
I am truly grateful to these two fine gentlemen (regardless of other opinions on this site <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/haha.gif ) for their efforts. Beers on me when we meet up <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

To bad it did not pan out, still a OK cruiser, and who wouldn't like Dusk Blue with parchment guts. It was our pleasure Bill, we even knew the guy selling the car, saw him at the Chevelle show last August.

Looked pretty good in the pics but this is why you should never buy sight unseen....
What were the issues, in case anyone else is interested in the car?

The car was a good looking car with nice paint and trim, some repop. The interior was OK, all OE seat belts with PUI type door panels that presented well.
Looked like some repair work to the quarters but the car was very solid overall.
OE 12 bolt in place with what may have been a added F41.
Here is the down side. The car may have been a L78 with a replacement 4 bolt motor, it had the 6K tach. How ever not one OE L78 components remained with the car, 837,499, carb, all the pulleys and brackets (PS car)booster, MS and even the horns all gone.
Grady and me thought low to mid 20's for someone that just wanted a nice car to drive.
Still a nice looking ride.

Would it be appropriate to post a picture?
Maybe a PM of the add would be cool?

Seller has it on Craigslist in Cleveland OH, so I hope it's not an issue to put a link to that so others can see the subject of discussion....

……and the story continues….
Earlier this week I received a call from a guy in Nebraska who asks if I am still looking for a 69 Chevelle SS396. I said yes, I am. He said he has one, Dusk blue, white side stripe, L78, M21, Parchment bench seat interior, and it had the build sheet. He said he would forward pictures to me. They came soon afterward, but they were in some format I’m not familiar with, and each picture was literally about the size of a postage stamp. Couldn’t see much, but some of them looked strangely familiar. Then in one of the tiny pics I could see that the car had Ohio license plates on it. I called him up and asked if he bought this in the Cleveland area a few months ago. He said that he did, and I told him no thanks, I passed on that car back when it was for sale in Ohio. He sounded befuddled, asked why I was not interested, and I gave him some reasons as best I could remember them off the top of my head. I mentioned that the guys I had look at the car at the time were only shown an IBM punch card (the kind sometimes found from the interior trim shop) as any form of documentation. Nebraska guy says no, he has the whole build sheet as proof of the car’s legitimacy. I said I would be interested in seeing that.
Well, it took a few days, a number of tries in various formats before he was able to successfully scan it today and send to me as an email attachment. Took one glance at it and it’s an obvious fake….print font is definitely wrong. Called him back and told him the bad news….the conversation ended quickly. He called back about a half hour later and wanted me to help him to understand exactly what was wrong with the build sheet. We spent a lot of time on the phone together, and I hooked him up to Dale McIntosh’s website, where there are several examples of Baltimore 69 build sheets, so that he could see for himself. We talked a couple more times today and he says he is getting his attorney involved because he feels he was duped. There will probably be more to follow…..
It is a slippery slope out there. As always, caveat emptor... especially in this hobby!!
Bill, thanks for the heads-up that this car is still out there. Just attended Good Guys in Columbus, OH., where I met a guy looking for a documented 1969 L78 manual trans car. I'll make sure he is aware of this one. Lots of slime balls out there..

It is happening more and more often every day. I was just involved in an LS6 convertible inspection. The car was under restoration and left me little to see that I could prove that is was not real. The engine stamp was good and matched the car. Something kept bugging me about it so I dug deep into my box of photocopied ads for LS6 cars dating back into the early 2000s. Low and behold was an ebay ad for a firewall with cowl tag and VIN, plus engine and associated parts. Had to give the new owner the bad news that he now had a rebodied LS6 convert. Word of caution, if I find anyone and you are faking these cars I will personally bury you on the internet. The law does not seem to be able to do much so your name will become a household word when I am done. No slander or libel at all just pure truth and facts. More reasons to post the complete VIN on line when a fake is located so someone else does not get screwed!
I just saw one of these people on a recent TV show about classic car values and they showcased this builders car. I think he holds the award for the highest quantity of faked cars. He not only gets away with it but then they use him and his car on TV. VERY sad!

The upcoming Mecum Harrisburg auction has five '70 LS6 convertibles going up on the auction block. One which appears real with strong documentation, one claimed clone, and the others are anyone's guess.
Few produced and a crowd of them at a single auction.....sure. This year/make/model (as well as others) are guilty until proven innocent.

The latest...
Current owner from Nebraska called me yesterday and says he has traced the car back to a Carlisle auction a number of years back. Carlisle Auction people say their records show the car had the build sheet at that time. He has decided to abandon any pursuit of legal action, cut his losses and sell for whatever he can get.

Car that's the subject of this 8+ year old thread is back in Ohio (if it ever really left ) at a dealer, and up for bids on eBay currently....

Asking price now is about double what it was back then.

I never got the VIN, Pete. There's a CON VIN stamp on the trans in the current eBay ad, but not sure if that's the original trans or not. Don't want to post something erroneous, as this whole deal is questionable enough as is. I know it's the same car because I had a picture of the Trim Tag from 8+ yrs ago, and there's a picture of it in the current eBay ad, and they are the same.

I have a scan of the phony build sheet that the guy in Nebraska sent me 8+ years ago, but it's too large a .pdf file to post here. When Grady & Mike looked at the car for me the seller at that time made no mention to them of any build sheet. Only two possible reasons for that:
1) He knew that Grady & Mike knew their stuff and would have laughed at that build sheet, or;
2) The guy in Nebraska made up the sheet.
I do notice now that the CON VIN on the trans (shown in the pictures of the current eBay ad) matches the VIN shown in the upper right corner of the fake build sheet, so I think I'm reasonably safe in assuming that the VIN of the car is 136379B349701.
