12 Bolt B.U. rear end

I'm looking to ship a Chevy B.U. 12 bolt rear end. I've never shipped a rear end before, where could I go to get shipping quotes?

I always use truck freight for a complete rear. Old Glory Freight is pretty good and the prices are great.

Uship.com or any of the major truck freight companies can provide an online or phone quote. I've shipped a number of items with truck freight and you will save a lot of money if the rear is brought directly to the shipping terminal. Just attach the rear to a wood shipping pallet and then wrap the portion of the axle tube with the BU stamping with Cardboard and tape to protect it from any damage that might occur. It is a lot more expensive for the shipping firm to pick up the rear from you especially if you are shipping from a residential address.

This is timely, as I am getting ready to ship a 12 bolt.
I have had very good luck with large heavy items (engines, double oven, etc.) shipping Old Dominion. Very reliable, and great customer service.

So, when you guys ship a 12 bolt, do you just strap the assembled unit securely to a pallet? I am guessing no problem with the unit being longer than the pallet.

Do you put any protective pieces (like cardboard boxes) over the ends?

Whatever you do don't use UPS freight. I shipped a BE 12 bolt 3-4 years ago. The seller had the bill of lading and all paperwork competed. It was to ship to a UPS terminal for pickup. It was lost for over 3 weeks! The truck showed up at the buyer's business PO box address! UPS later created a new bill of lading showing prepaid and tried to collect shipping charges from both of us. I spent months dealing with them on that one.

Forward air has been good on shipments for me also.

Personally, I wouldn't ship a bowling ball UPS. I shipped a cross ram set up about 12 years ago and they destroyed it. I had triple boxed in computer boxes, each one lined with 1 inch styrofoam. Came back to me in a different box than I had shipped. I am guessing because the insurance was so high, that an employee just had to see what was in there, and didn't get it taped up well enought to survive their torture test.

Like I said, I have had good experience with Old Dominion. Going from one of their terminals to one of their terminals.

I never shipped a rear end, but I think I would crate it up first, then strap it to the longer pallets they have. JMO for what it is worth. Having the axles hanging over the pallet just is asking for trouble.

I strap it tight to a pallet with multiple ratchet straps then I shrink wrap it.
