Picked up a set of Mickey Thompson valve covers.Don't see ''MADE IN CHINA or TAIWAN''on them so I'm wondering if I got lucky and they are original U.S.made.Only info I can see is 140R-48B on the underside of each cover.Bill.

They are. After the US castings everything went to Japan so if it doesn't say Japan you are safe. Nice set btw...

Nice looking covers. The insignia (backwards Bow Tie) is the same as in my 1972 Catalog although the part number differs......why the bow ties are backwards..IDK.... licensing maybe or read wrong by tool/die maker ?????

Thought I would share a picture of the parts my oldest son has accumulated for his 69 Nova. For the last few years he gets a part or 2 for his birthday. This year he got the 10" Ansens he wanted. Pretty good taste in parts for a 12 year old. He still wants a tunnel ram and an L88 hood.

Wow, you didn't waste any time spotting this post did you? He gets the wheels Saturday, he doesn't know about them yet. Thanks for keeping your eyes open for the good stuff for him. I owe you.

WOW Lewis that kid has a great perspective for his age. All we have to do now is
have him swap out those Peanut Motor Rocker covers for some Rat motor ones so he'll be able to spin those 10 inchers...LOL <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif

Being he is 12 and this will be his first car I'm thinking a small block will be plenty. Stick a nice cam in it and the tunnel ram and send him down the road. I don't care if it performs like a bowl of soggy cereal as long as it sounds mean and has the look. Keep him from doing something stupid.

Damn nice stuff for any 12 year old, 32 yr old or a 62 year old.......my 17 yr old son doesn't know how to spell Camaro or the meaning of Day Two ...... uggggh

Bill your covers are US made and probably had a pebble grain pcv/breather unlike the 427 covers that Dan has. I will have to look for my made in Japan covers to show you the difference.

What is the time frame for the 427 ones?

396L35
05-18-2014, 08:14 PM
The same as the non 427 ones. Late 60's to mid 70's before they shipped it to Japan.

These don't say "Mickey Thompson" or "Japan"
on the inside.

In the mid 80's when Holley owned the M/T name they were being cast in Ohio.

Fantastic LOOK...ain't nutt'n better than M/T 427 covers. By the way B-B M/T's were available as FINNED only W/O the M/T in the center? Yep...They were made with or with-out. The SB NOS M/T's I have mocked up for my 69 302 are M/T-Holley 1971-72... with no Country of origin.

What makes the Japan-cast versions different/less desirable than the USA ones? I have a set of the "427" covers (with cool breathers) that are Japan-cast and I can't see any difference except the word Japan.

Day2_69Z
05-23-2014, 05:48 PM
I think the Japan covers are a different alloy of die cast material. They don't seem to have a deep true aluminum alloy buffed, polished depth from what Iv'e seen over the years. Keep in mind none of these, USA,Japan,Taiwan were manufactured with premium alloy..(mixing recipes change)..these are still only 'die cast' to be sold as a high profit item. (has anyone actually looked at how generic and low quality the 60-70's Cal Custom die cast items are?) The Real Early First Edition M/T 396 script, then later 427 script Covers are heavier & more rough machined around the edges but are truely hard to come by in near perfect condition and are hard to 'restore'
I may be wrong.... I actually like the Japan Covers better....Are they M/T Breathers on your Japan covers? If so...they are worth a lot more than the valve covers. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/youguysrock.gif
It's probally just the 'Made in USA' syndrome.....

Thanks Sam....years of accumulating...and that stuff is mainly top end valve cover related.....There's Tons of Day Two stuff already on or going on the car. 40-45 year old NOS or nice used reconditioned stuff ....

Your Chevelle is awesome in those colors, equipment and provenance. WOW !!! One of the Planet's Best I'm sure....

Plain-Jane breathers. Happy to see the drippers still intact. Kinda' pitted on the lower side. Had a member polish up my Cal Custom covers for a future mild Day 2 update to my Camaro.

Love the M/T breathers. There was a polished set of BBC's with those breathers on ePay a few years ago. I think the ask was in the 200s? I passed but they sure were nice.
