Was wondering if all 69 chevelles with bucket seats have headrest or where they an option. I've seen most chevelles do have them but mine doesn't nor does a friends 69

My understanding is that all 69 Chevelles came with head rests. (Huge blanket statements are usually met with some exception)

I see 69 Chevelles with 68 seats sometimes.

Prior to 1/1/69, the headrests were optional. After that date, they became standard equipment. So, 69 Chevelles produced in calendar year 1968 may or may not have been originally equipped with them.

We've talked about this before, but for 1969 Chevelles, only 774 Chevelles were built without headrests....and 4432 '69 Impalas were as well according to Chevrolet.
1969 headrests weren't really optional,as they automatically came with the seats, but a $16.90 credit could be issued, known as RPO-AR1 Less Head Restraint when either Bucket seats or Bench seats were ordered and the customer said No headrests please, sometime during January of 69.
Headrests later became mandatory sometime during mid Jan. of'69
I've personally only seen two '69 Chevelles built w/o headrests.
Jim Ferrons old car for one..

I love exceptions.

Especially Glacier Blue 375hp 4spd exceptions.

Great Car, where is it now?

Mike,

How early (build date) is your Chevelle and your friends Chevelle. Did you apply for NCRS Report?

I don't think it was a definite line in the sand when repeating that Jan.1st date.
Yes,orders taken after Jan.1st,1969 received headrests as mandatory.
But I'd guess some orders taken in late 1968,where the customer asked for the headrest delete/credit that were also scheduled for an after Jan.1st assembling date, were still built & honored with the delete/credit.
The one Chevelle I looked at w/o rests years ago had a 1st week of Jan. 69 assembly date.I don't know when Jim Ferrons Chevelle was built, but I'd guess it was early '69 too.
Here's a Chevrolet bulletin I have explaining the details of the headrest delete filler piece to the service dept.dated Oct. 1968.,with a subtle notice @ the end.

Federal law should trump any order. They all should have headrests as of 1/1/69.

Although I mentioned bucket seats were included,I've honestly never seen a 1969 bucket seat with AR-1 head rest delete, only bench.
I just assumed they were included, but this bulletin specifically mentions only std. bench is affected by the delete, and calls out to exclude the strato bench & bucket.

chevyman0429 can you confirm if you & your friends Chevelles bucket seats officially received the RPO AR-1 headrest delete and if they have a professional looking filler piece in them with a possible part # on it?

My car originally came with buckets but do not have headrest so no I can't confirm yes or no. I'll get some pictures of the tops of the seats tomorrow. I don't recall there being any type of filler peice.

I still have it tucked away. Because someone asked, build date was 12D -4th week of Dec Atlanta.

Cloth bench seat. Has the chrome escutcheons in the top of the seat. Seems like they simply left the headrests off... http://www.classicperformance.com/ebay_pics/L78DAY2.jpg

Here's a copy of the service bulletin on the CRG Camaro site although it pertains to all passenger cars.
http://www.camaros.org/images/hrest/hr_TB69-T-1.jpg

The site also goes on to discuss the head restraint deletion and has an example of a portion of a window sticker with RPO AR1: Less Head Restraint:
