Has anyone looked at this car or know anything about it? Jeff

This car was at Mecum Indy in May. It was bid to $52K and I believe the owner had a $58K reserve on it. The building I saw the car in Friday afternoon and Saturday had kind of poor lighting so I did not get a good look at the car. The block was stamped T0607MQ and 17N240180, which matched the cars VIN, but I didn't get a picture of that. It was a nice looking car from what I could tell.

VIN does line up with a June build.
I will let Kurt comment on the tag itself.
But... those are not the factory rivets. At the very least the tag has been off the car.

My understanding (and if I am wrong, someone please correct me, because I don't want to wrongly slam anyone) is that Mecum takes no steps to investigate <span style="font-weight: bold">anything </span>along the lines of authenticity, i.e. docs, pops, vin tags, trim tags, restamps etc.

I have it in my notes at Rosso&amp;Steele on 1/22/10 with the tag a ? mark, also dip stick wrong, radiator wrong, lift bracket wrong, and no carb pvc hose clamp and fuel line

It's supposed to have spoilers.

Just kidding. Beautiful car despite the questions as to its authenticity.

Tag is repro, IMO.

The car was bought as a non-matching drivetrain project out of the NW by a guy in CA. He set out on a full blown resto based on the fact that he believed it was a real L78. He contacted me as he was closing in on finishing the resto and I pointed out the fake tag (Kurt, if you recall, I sent you this tag back then). He was devastated but was too far into the resto to stop (I think he had $65K in the car). He finished it and put it on ebay...It has been through a few hands since.
