An update on Holly-and her kidney function....

I shared this on Facebook a few days ago...but I know that not everyone is on Facebook...so I will share it here as well.


Lynn and I would like to give an update on Holly's status with her kidneys. After three years of her G.F.R. (Glomerular Filtration Rate-which tests how well the kidneys are functioning) trending in the wrong direction...Holly's kidneys are having a hard time functioning. The doctor has explained to us that if Holly's kidney function keeps trending in this direction she will be looking at dialysis by possibly June of next year...or sooner.

He will see her in about 5 months (right before Christmas) and at that time, we will evaluate her kidney function again, If it is still trending down, we will discuss having a fistula done (A fistula is an access that is made by joining an artery to a vein under your skin to make a bigger blood vessel so that high volume dialysis can happen). He gave us the warning signs for kidney failure...so we know what to look for (Tiredness, irritability, scratching of the skin, swelling and sometimes nausea). Please keep us in your prayers...we'd appreciate it!

I gotta say it again, Holly is one of the most upbeat and positive people I have ever met. Maybe it is because she has dealt with this since she was a baby and to her it is just normal but she takes all of this in complete stride, kind of a 'Eh, what ever&quot; kind of attitude. It is likely what has kept her around all these years as she will not let it get her down (or at least from what I have seen). Lesson to be learned by all of us. Go get em Holly!

You, Lynn &amp; Holly are always in our thoughts and prayers. I know they are talking dialysis, but if kidney function continues to decrease, is kidney transplant an option? Zack was on dialysis for a little over three months. As you know, my angel, Sherri, was able to donate a kidney in the summer of 2012. Mom and son are both doing well. Zack is 20 now. Perhaps things are more complicated with her heart transplant.

Either way, Holly has the hardest part under control, and that is attitude.

Hi Lynn, Transplant is a definite. It's just a matter of when, sir. Holly has been on the transplant list for a year and a half. We are looking for a living donor. Lynn and I are too old to donate, too.

Really??? I think you are younger than me. They were going to let me donate (I was 59 at the time) but my blood pressure was too high. I was really bummed, as I hated for Sherri to be the donor. Zack's a bit of a momma's boy, and I knew he would need his mom during recovery. But it worked out OK with me taking care of both of them. Sherri's mom (just as much of an angel as Sherri) came and helped out for a week or two.

I know you will find a close match live donor eventually. It can happen. I know while we were waiting, we were instructed that we could get a call any time day or night, and we would have 45 min max to get Zack to Children's Hospital.
