View Full Version : My soon to be wife's new project driver. 1969 Z/28

My fiance told me she wanted a 1969 Camaro so I was on the hunt (of course she didn't want any of the cars I currently have here). Was at a local swap meet a few weeks ago and got to talking with some guys and they told me about this car. Me and her went up to look at it and she liked it so we struck a deal on it. It's an X77 Z/28 which happens to be an original Rally Green car. Tach and gauges and 4.10 gears. Non matching drive train. No other options really. Car was redone with GM quarters, tail panel, door skins, and fenders back in the late 80's and was driven and used like it should be. Paint is rough and checking but car is still very solid and I personally love the patina. We're gonna clean it up, I'll add some cool Day 2 stuff I have and make it look a little more correct under the hood but that's all up to her in the end. I figured if she wanted a 1969 Camaro, let's get her something cool. Big thanks to John (C1SS396) for all the help this past weekend picking it up and getting it home.

Someone has added the chrome trimmings ( X33 has them X77 don't), and an Z/28 should have the long bumper horns in the rear. Maybe these changes were made when it was repaired in the 80's

Yes, the chrome trim was added as the previous owner liked it better.

Hay Matt you forgot something !
So normally after a road trip you may have to clean some soda bottles, wrappers etc.
Not a trip with Matt this is what was behind the seat in my truck after picking up the Z.

Steve-
Any chance that car was from Illinois at any time? About 25 years ago we had one like that (can't remember if our interior was white houndstooth or orange). RS/SS 350/Auto/Air/Tilt/Console/Guages. Had mostly original paint and all original interior at the time. Dad drove it out to Carlisle around 1987 and sold it there.

I don't believe this is that car. This car was originally sold in Arizona and stayed there until after 1990. This car has air, but no gauges or tilt. This is a very original car as well.

So I dressed it up under the hood a little better for the time being since it looked so horrible before that. Installed a set of original 1969 no dripper valve covers and a cowl air cleaner. Anything looks better than no air cleaner and rusty chrome moroso valve covers.
Thanks John and Lauren McKee for the cool vintage Camaro jacket she can rock while out cruising.

I noticed that after I installed them. That's what I get for being in a hurry. Engine has to come out soon anyway so I'll take care of it then.
Fast67VelleN2O
01-26-2015, 08:03 PM
Just an update. Back in September, I pulled the engine because it was smoking above 3500 rpm and there was oil pumping out of everywhere. This is ok because the car did this when I bought it so I knew the engine had to come out eventually.

This ended up being (one of) my problems.
I feel bad because my wife's been bugging me to get it finished up but I've been collecting parts (thanks to some of the members here) and getting another engine together to put into the car.

We took the Camaro to Atco Raceway last night. Great air, good prep. Left the car as it is, with the 20 year old hard as a rock tires and everything just to get a good baseline. I ended up hurting the transmission on my 3rd pass, but this was the best pass of the night. I think it'll go 12's with a good set of tires and if I get the wheel hop situation taken care of and get that 60 foot down to the 1.8XX range. A few people came up and were wondering why I was "beating on" an original Z/28. I had a good laugh at that one.
Sounds like a good time! That mph shows there is another second left to lose. Would love to see more pics.

Excellent! These guys out there that have these cars that do not race them have no idea what they are missing out on, at least have one in your collection you can take to the track and race. I had one older customer (67 years old) that would come by my shop and talk about racing before he went to nam, then had a family and never raced again, same with all his friends, but that didn't stop him and his friends from filling up barns with muscle cars, well one day I said John why don't you stop talking about racing and just start racing, why don't you do what all your old friends talk about? He says well......you really think I should, your dam right you should, Today....John is almost 68 years old, he looks forward to the start of racing season, he changed his life, this summer he wheeled his 10 sec wheels up small block Camaro at many high altitude races and had the time of his life........I couldn't be more proud! You old timers out there should consider this post....change your life

Great. Get that thing out and use it. I love driving my dinosaurs. Putting them up on pedestal is just not fun unless your to old to drive them. My dad helps me when I need a hand and I made him drive my race car. It was nice to share the hard work we put into keeping them running. I also found some very nice original black interior parts over the past few years and finally got around to installing them along with a nice shallow walnut wheel. I also installed a nice original 1969 shifter assembly but put a Day 2 Hurst knob in black on it. I didn't replace the faded carpet to keep with the patina look. Here's the before and after.

The perfect stance and wheel and tire combination for a '69 Camaro. Takes me back to my high school days. It's a shame so many of these cars have gone the "pro touring" route.

Had the car out to the in law's for Christmas dinner. Probably one of the last nice days for the year (50 degrees). Hope everyone had a great holiday!

Finally found the correct Rosewood steering wheel needed for an 05A car. I had an early shallow walnut on it before this. Thanks to member Jeff Miller for the cleanup and mild restoration on the wheel as it had some smoke damage. Wheel has some wear on it but it's perfect for this car.

It never bothered me before, being black, but it has started to bother me. I'll probably end up painting it at some point.

LI Corvette Supply makes an argent paint that works real well for this... I used it on mine.
